What is DIN 17102 TStE420 Steel?

DIN 17102 TStE420, also written TStE 420, TSTE420, DIN17102 TStE420 and TStE420 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The T prefix means Tief — low-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is still 420 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still typically 530–680 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 low-temperature line that conversion tables map to P420NL1 and S420NL. It is not TStE380 and not TStE460. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.

A purchase order that only says “420 NL fine grain” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 TStE420 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE420 or WStE420 against a TStE420 drawing. Do not ship TStE355 or TStE460 because the yield step is wrong.

DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European structural work usually names S420NL under EN 10025-3. New pressure work usually names P420NL1. Replacement projects still name TStE420 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.

This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition

DIN 17102 TStE420 / TStE 420 tightens phosphorus and sulfur versus StE420 / WStE420. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.

StE420 / WStE420 use C 0.20 max, P 0.035 and S 0.030. EStE420 is tighter still. Do not ship a StE420 heat as TStE420. If the order dual-names P420NL1 or S420NL, residuals must also fit the named EN edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.

Mechanical Properties

Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 420 family. Low-temperature impact is why the T letter exists.

Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 TStE420 (typical published bands)

100 – 150370510 – 660
Density7.85 g/cm³7.85 g/cm³

Do not quote 420 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 530–680 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.A or SA285 Gr.B.

Impact for TStE420 is the low-temperature package. S420NL comparison is commonly −50 °C. P420NL1 comparison is commonly −40 °C. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. If the drawing names a still colder package, the grade may be EStE420 / P420NL2, not TStE420.

SA285 Gr.C, SA299 Gr.A and SA737 Gr.B are also vessel or HSLA plates. None of them is TStE420.

Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 420 MPa

DIN 17102 TStE420 / TStE 420 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness at low temperature at the 420 MPa yield step: tanks, cold-climate steelwork and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to S420NL / P420NL1. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.C or SA537 Cl.1.

SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use nickel. TStE420 uses fine grain, tighter residuals and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.

Weldability

TStE420 is killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel with tighter P / S than StE420. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.

Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 530–680 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 TStE420 / TStE 420 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a low-temperature quality.

If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists DIN 17102 TStE420 (and TStE 420 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S420NL or P420NL1 is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for TStE420 fine grain steel:

  • Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
  • Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
  • Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
  • Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits

Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.

Supplementary Requirements

Most export DIN 17102 TStE420 / TStE 420 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.

Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason TStE420 exists. Write −20 °C, −40 °C or −50 °C explicitly.

Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.

Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.

NDE. UT per the named method.

Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.

Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.

FAQ

What is TStE420 steel plate?
TStE420 is a DIN 17102 weldable normalized fine-grain steel with the Tief quality letter. Yield is 420 MPa at ≤16 mm and tensile is typically 530–680 MPa at ≤70 mm. Buyers also write TStE 420, TSTE420 and DIN17102 TStE420. SHH STEEL supplies this plate as a global steel mill sourcing partner.
What is the equivalent of TStE420?
he usual modern comparisons are S420NL and P420NL1. StE420 is the basic-quality sister. WStE420 is the elevated-temperature sister. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
What is the difference between TStE420 and StE420?
Yield and tensile look the same. StE420 is basic quality. TStE420 is low-temperature quality with tighter P / S and a named Charpy temperature. Do not ship StE420 against a TStE420 drawing.
TStE420 vs SA203 Grade A — which one for low temperature?
Different books. SA203 Gr.A is nickel pressure-vessel plate. TStE420 is fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel with a Tief letter. Use the grade named on the drawing.
What is the chemical composition of TStE420?
Typical heat limits are C 0.18 max, Si 0.10–0.50, Mn 1.00–1.70, P 0.030 max, S 0.025 max. Product analysis is slightly wider. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered.
What Charpy temperature should I specify for TStE420?
Write the temperature, energy, location and orientation. Common comparison temperatures are −40 °C for P420NL1 and −50 °C for S420NL. Do not write only “impact tested.”
Can TStE420 be used for pressure vessels?
Yes, when the project still names DIN 17102 or accepts P420NL1 dual marking. It is not an automatic ASME Section VIII grade.
How do you weld TStE420?
Treat it as killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel. Match consumables to the 530–680 MPa tensile band, control hydrogen, and qualify the WPS to the applicable code.
What thickness of TStE420 plate can SHH STEEL supply?
Common supply is 6–150 mm thick, 1500–4000 mm wide and 3000–12000 mm long.
Where can I buy TStE420 steel plate?
SHH STEEL supplies DIN 17102 TStE420 to the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia on FOB Shanghai or CIF Houston / Rotterdam / Jebel Ali.
Do I need EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 for TStE420?
EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when written on the order.
