DIN 17102 EStE460 Steel Plate | EStE460 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 EStE460 Steel ?
DIN 17102 EStE460, also written EStE 460, ESTE460, DIN17102 EStE460 and EStE460 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The E prefix is the special low-temperature quality — colder and cleaner than TStE460. Yield in the thin band is still 460 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still typically 570–720 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 special-low-temp line that conversion tables map to P460NL2. It is not EStE420 and not EStE500. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “460 NL2 fine grain” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 EStE460 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE460, WStE460 or TStE460 against an EStE460 drawing. Do not ship EStE420 or EStE500 because the yield step is wrong.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work usually names P460NL2. Replacement projects still name EStE460 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A or SA203 Gr.D. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 EStE460 / EStE 460 is the cleanest 460 column in this book. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — DIN 17102 EStE460 (typical limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.16 | 0.18 |

Compare the 460 family:
| Grade | C max (heat) | P max (heat) | S max (heat) |
|---|---|---|---|
| StE460 / WStE460 | 0.20 | 0.035 | 0.030 |
| TStE460 | 0.18 | 0.030 | 0.025 |
| EStE460 | 0.16 | 0.025 | 0.015 |
Do not ship a TStE460 heat as EStE460. If the order dual-names P460NL2, residuals must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 460 family. Special low-temperature impact is why the E letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 EStE460 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 460 | 570 – 720 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 450 | 570 – 720 |
| 35 – 50 | 440 | 570 – 720 |
| 50 – 70 | 430 | 570 – 720 |
| 70 – 100 | 420 | 560 – 710 |
| 100 – 150 | 410 | 550 – 700 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 460 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 570–720 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.A or SA285 Gr.A.
Impact for EStE460 is the special low-temperature package. P460NL2 comparison is commonly −50 °C with the tighter NL2 chemistry idea. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. Do not assume a TStE460 coupon covers EStE460.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 460
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE460 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P460N / S460N |
| WStE460 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P460NH |
| TStE460 | Low temperature (Tief) | P460NL1 / S460NL |
| EStE460 | Special low temperature | P460NL2 |
Same 460 MPa yield idea. E is not a marketing letter on TStE460. E has lower carbon, lower P and S, and a colder quality idea. SHH STEEL will not ship TStE460 against an EStE460 purchase order without a written change.

Special Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 460 MPa
DIN 17102 EStE460 / EStE 460 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need the coldest fine-grain package at the 460 MPa yield step: low-temperature tanks, cold-climate steelwork and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to P460NL2. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.C or SA537 Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.B or SA203 Gr.F. Those grades use nickel. EStE460 uses fine grain, low residuals and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.3. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
EStE460 is killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel with the lowest C / P / S in the 460 family. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 570–720 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 EStE460 / EStE 460 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a special low-temperature quality.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.B. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 EStE460 (and EStE 460 if requested); heat number; heat analysis including the tighter C / P / S; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P460NL2 is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for EStE460 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 EStE460 / EStE 460 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason EStE460 exists. Write the temperature explicitly.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Restricted residuals. Some European files copy EN 10028-3 NL2 options onto EStE460. Write those options on the order.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.

FAQ
- What is EStE460 steel plate?
- EStE460 is a DIN 17102 weldable normalized fine-grain steel with the special low-temperature quality letter. Yield is 460 MPa at ≤16 mm and tensile is typically 570–720 MPa at ≤70 mm. Buyers also write EStE 460, ESTE460 and DIN17102 EStE460. SHH STEEL supplies this plate as a global steel mill sourcing partner.
- What is the equivalent of EStE460?
- The usual modern comparison is P460NL2. TStE460 maps to P460NL1 / S460NL. StE460 maps to P460N / S460N. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
- What is the difference between EStE460 and TStE460?
- Yield and tensile look the same. EStE460 has lower carbon, lower phosphorus and lower sulfur, and a colder quality idea. Do not ship TStE460 against an EStE460 drawing.
- EStE460 vs SA203 Grade D — which one for low temperature?
- Different books. SA203 Grade D is 3.5Ni pressure-vessel plate. EStE460 is fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel with a special low-temperature letter. Use the grade named on the drawing.
- What is the chemical composition of EStE460?
- Typical heat limits are C 0.16 max, Si 0.10–0.60, Mn 1.00–1.70, P 0.025 max, S 0.015 max. Product analysis is slightly wider. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered.
- What Charpy temperature should I specify for EStE460?
- Write the temperature, energy, location and orientation. P460NL2 comparison is commonly −50 °C. Do not write only “impact tested” and do not assume a TStE460 coupon covers EStE460.
- Can EStE460 be used for pressure vessels?
- Yes, when the project still names DIN 17102 or accepts P460NL2 dual marking. It is not an automatic ASME Section VIII grade.
- How do you weld EStE460?
- Treat it as killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel with low residuals. Match consumables to the 570–720 MPa tensile band, control hydrogen, and qualify the WPS to the applicable code.
- What thickness of EStE460 plate can SHH STEEL supply?
- Common supply is 6–150 mm thick, 1500–4000 mm wide and 3000–12000 mm long.
- Where can I buy EStE460 steel plate?
- SHH STEEL supplies DIN 17102 EStE460 to the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia on FOB Shanghai or CIF Houston / Rotterdam / Jebel Ali.
- Do I need EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 for EStE460?
- EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when written on the order.
- What is the delivery time for EStE460?
- Ex-stock about 5–7 days. Standard mill normalize about 45 days. Special heat treatment, simulated PWHT or 3.2 inspection about 2 months.
- What is the density of EStE 460?
- 7.85 g/cm³.
