ASME SA662 Grade B Steel Plate | SA662 Gr.B Low Temp Vessel Plate
What is ASME SA662 Grade B Steel?
ASME SA662 Grade B, also written ASME SA662 GR.B, is killed carbon-manganese-silicon steel plate under ASME SA-662/SA-662M. The specification is identical with ASTM A662/A662M. It covers three grades — Grade A, Grade B and Grade C — intended primarily for welded pressure vessels where improved low-temperature notch toughness is important. Grade B is the middle tensile line: 275 MPa yield and 450–585 MPa tensile. Plates of Grade B over 40 mm shall be normalized. Plates of Grade B 40 mm and under are normally supplied as-rolled unless the order names normalize or stress relief. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this Grade. Plate is produced to ASME SA-662/SA-662M and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Buyers write ASME SA662 Grade B, ASME SA662 GR.B, SA662 Gr.B, SA662GRB, SA-662 Grade B, SA 662 Gr B, A662 Grade B and ASTM A662 Gr.B. A purchase order that only says “SA662” is incomplete. A purchase order that writes “SA612 Grade B” is mixing this book with SA612, which has no Grade split. This page is not SA516 Gr.70. SA516 Grade 70 is 260 MPa yield and 485–620 MPa tensile. SA662 Grade B keeps 275 MPa yield and a 450–585 MPa tensile band written for toughness. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543. It is not HSLA like SA737. It is not heat-treated C-Mn-Si like SA738.
The steel shall be killed and shall conform to the fine austenitic grain size requirement of ASME SA-20 / ASTM A20. Current practice normally limits thickness to about 50 mm. Dual marking SA662 / A662 Grade B is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2. Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in pressure vessel steel plates and carbon steel plates. It does not sit with ASME SA387 Cr-Mo alloy plate or ASTM A36 steel plate structural plate.
SA-20 still governs marking, testing location, retests, repair rules and supplementary requirements unless the product specification overrides them.
Chemical Composition
ASME SA662 Grade B / ASME SA662 GR.B uses the Grade B column.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — ASME SA662 Grade B (typical Table 1 limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.19 | 0.22 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.85 – 1.50 | 0.79 – 1.62 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.025 | 0.025 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.025 | 0.025 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.15 – 0.40 | 0.13 – 0.45 |
Grade A carbon heat is 0.14% max. Grade C carbon heat is 0.20% max and silicon heat is 0.15–0.50%. Do not ship Grade A or Grade C as Grade B because all three are C-Mn-Si. Vacuum carbon-deoxidized steel under S17 may replace part of the table when specified.
SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when SA-20 requires it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens phosphorus or sulfur, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Grade B shares yield with Grade A and sits below Grade C tensile.
Tensile Requirements — ASME SA662 Grade B
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Yield strength, min | 275 MPa (40 ksi) |
| Tensile strength | 450 – 585 MPa (65 – 85 ksi) |
| Elongation in 200 mm, min | 20% |
| Elongation in 50 mm, min | 23% |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
| Hardness | Not a default substitute for tensile |
Grade A is 275 MPa yield and 400–540 MPa tensile. Grade C is 295 MPa yield and 485–620 MPa tensile. Do not stamp Grade B as Grade C because a coupon came in high. Do not treat Grade B as SA516 Gr.65 without checking the toughness package and the 40 mm normalize rule.
Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Notch toughness is the reason buyers pick this book. Write the temperature, energy, location and orientation. For plates over 40 mm, normalize is a specification requirement.

SA203 Gr.B, SA225 Gr.D and SA455 steel plate are also vessel plates. None of them is ASME SA662 GR.B.
Low-Temperature C-Mn-Si Vessel Service
ASME SA662 Grade B / ASME SA662 GR.B is selected when the vessel wants killed fine-grain C-Mn-Si with improved low-temperature notch toughness and the Grade B tensile band. Typical equipment is welded storage and process vessels written to SA-662 Grade B. Grades A, B and C comply substantially with ISO pressure vessel steels P9, P15 and P18 respectively. Allowable stress comes from ASME Section II Part D after the Code lists this Grade.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use nickel for toughness. SA662 Grade B uses carbon control, manganese, fine grain and, above 40 mm, normalize. It is not QT alloy like SA543. It is not SA302 Gr.C. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Do not assume every Grade B plate is as-rolled. Over 40 mm, normalize is mandatory. Under 40 mm, as-rolled is normal unless the drawing names normalize for toughness.
Weldability
SA662 Gr.B is killed fine-grain C-Mn-Si at the Grade B tensile band. Welding is Code welding.
Qualify procedures to ASME Section IX. Use consumables written for 450–585 MPa tensile, not a SA516 Gr.70 procedure copied across without review, and not a QT alloy procedure from SA543. Hydrogen control, preheat and PWHT follow the qualified procedure and the vessel specification.
Do not copy a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 procedure onto SA662 Grade B. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review, including packages prepared for US, EU or Middle East inspectors.
Heat Treatment
Plates of Grade B over 40 mm shall be normalized. Plates of Grade B 40 mm and under are normally supplied as-rolled. The purchaser may order normalize or stress relief, or both, on the thinner band. Grade A is different: every Grade A plate is normalized, including thin plate.
If the vessel will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the SA543 QT route and not the SA537 Cl.1 heat-treated carbon route. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is ASME SA662 Grade B / ASME SA662 GR.B plate normalized above 40 mm, and as-rolled at 40 mm and under unless the order names normalize or stress relief.
The certificate lists ASME SA662 Grade B and, when dual certified, ASTM A662 Grade B; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the Grade B table; heat-treatment statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Surface is mill scale unless the order names shot blast, paint or machine allowance. Cutting, beveling and nest sizes belong on the purchase order.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for SA662 Gr.B low temp vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 50 mm. Current practice normally limits this specification to about 50 mm. The 40 mm mark is the normalize trigger
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length shells, heads and nest sizes inside those limits
Structural sizes belong on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. Fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-3 or EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6.
Tolerance
Dimensional limits follow ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances, not structural-plate tolerances from ASTM A36/A36M. UT to A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Repair welding of surface defects follows SA-20 rules unless the order forbids repair.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export ASME SA662 Grade B / ASME SA662 GR.B orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. Improved low-temperature toughness is the reason this specification exists.
Simulated PWHT. Same-heat coupons follow the vessel cycle when named.
NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578.
Vacuum carbon deoxidation (S17). When specified.
Normalize on ≤40 mm plate. Optional unless written.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
