DIN 17102 WStE420 Steel Plate | WStE420 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 WStE420 Steel ?
DIN 17102 WStE420, also written WStE 420, WSTE420, DIN17102 WStE420 and WStE420 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The W prefix means Warm — elevated-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is still 420 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still typically 530–680 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 warm line that conversion tables map to P420NH. It is not WStE380 and not WStE460. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “420 NH fine grain” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 WStE420. Do not ship StE420 against a WStE420 drawing because StE is basic quality. Do not ship TStE420 against a WStE420 drawing because T is low-temperature quality. Do not ship WStE355 or WStE460 because the yield step is wrong.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work usually names P420NH. Replacement projects still name WStE420 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. It is not SA515 Gr.70. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 WStE420 / WStE 420 uses the same 420 chemistry family as StE420. TStE420 and EStE420 tighten P and S. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — DIN 17102 WStE420 (typical limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.20 | 0.22 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.50 | 0.10 – 0.55 |

| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.22 | 0.24 |
If the order dual-names P420NH, residuals and P/S must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 420 family. Elevated-temperature proof stress is why the W letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 WStE420 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 420 | 530 – 680 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 410 | 530 – 680 |
| 35 – 50 | 400 | 530 – 680 |
| 50 – 70 | 390 | 530 – 680 |
| 70 – 100 | 380 | 520 – 670 |
| 100 – 150 | 370 | 510 – 660 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 420 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. When the order dual-names P420NH, elevated-temperature values come from EN 10028-3, not from a copied StE420 room-temperature coupon. Do not treat 530–680 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA515 Gr.65 or SA204 Gr.B.
Impact for WStE420 is not the TStE / EStE low-temperature package. Write the test temperature on the order. If the drawing names −50 °C, the grade is probably TStE420 or EStE420, not WStE420.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 420
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE420 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P420N / S420N |
| WStE420 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P420NH |
| TStE420 | Low temperature (Tief) | P420NL1 / S420NL |
| EStE420 | Special low temperature | P420NL2 |
Same 420 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and different design temperature. SHH STEEL will not ship WStE420 against a TStE420 impact temperature without a written change.

Elevated-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 420 MPa
DIN 17102 WStE420 / WStE 420 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness plus a warm-service designation at the 420 MPa yield step: process vessels, boilers, heat exchangers and steelwork still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to P420NH. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA515 Gr.60 or SA204 Gr.C.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.2. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
WStE420 is killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel at a higher strength step than WStE355. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 530–680 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 WStE420 / WStE 420 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.A or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 WStE420 (and WStE 420 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact and elevated-temperature proof stress when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P420NH is available only when chemistry, tensile, impact and elevated-temperature values all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for WStE420 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 WStE420 / WStE 420 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. Warm quality is not a −50 °C grade.
Elevated-temperature proof stress. Required when dual-naming P420NH or when the calculation uses warm allowable stress. Name the test temperature.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.

FAQ
- What is WStE420 steel plate?
- WStE420 is a DIN 17102 weldable normalized fine-grain steel with the Warm quality letter. Yield is 420 MPa at ≤16 mm and tensile is typically 530–680 MPa at ≤70 mm. Buyers also write WStE 420, WSTE420 and DIN17102 WStE420. SHH STEEL supplies this plate as a global steel mill sourcing partner.
- What is the equivalent of WStE420?
- The usual modern comparison is P420NH under EN 10028-3. StE420 is the basic-quality sister. TStE420 is the low-temperature sister. P355NH maps to WStE355, not WStE420. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact and elevated-temperature proof stress all fit the named EN edition.
- What is the difference between WStE420 and StE420?
- Yield and tensile look the same. StE420 is basic / room-temperature quality and maps to P420N / S420N. WStE420 is elevated-temperature quality and maps to P420NH. The W letter means elevated-temperature proof stress belongs on the order.
- Can WStE420 be used for pressure vessels?
- Yes, when the project still names DIN 17102 or accepts P420NH dual marking. It is not an automatic ASME Section VIII grade. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name a book such as SA516 Gr.70 or SA515 Gr.70 unless the specification explicitly accepts DIN.
- What is the chemical composition of WStE420?
- Typical heat limits are C 0.20 max, Si 0.10–0.50, Mn 1.00–1.70, P 0.035 max, S 0.030 max, with Nb and V for grain refinement. Product analysis is slightly wider. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered.
- What are the mechanical properties of WStE420?
- Yield is 420 MPa at ≤16 mm, then 410 / 400 / 390 MPa as thickness rises. Tensile at ≤70 mm is typically 530–680 MPa. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Elevated-temperature proof stress is added when the order names P420NH or a warm calculation.
- What temperature can WStE420 be used at?
- Warm quality means elevated-temperature service, not cryogenic service. Write the design temperature and the proof-stress test temperature on the order. If you need −40 °C or −50 °C Charpy, you probably need TStE420 or EStE420, not WStE420.
- How do you weld WStE420?
- Treat it as killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel. Match consumables to the 530–680 MPa tensile band, control hydrogen, and qualify the WPS to the applicable code. Do not copy a Cr-Mo procedure from SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2.
- Is WStE420 normalized or quenched and tempered?
- Normalized. Fine-grain practice plus normalize is the product idea. QT plates belong on other books such as EN 10025-6 or ASME QT vessel grades.
- What thickness of WStE420 plate can SHH STEEL supply?
- Common supply is 6–150 mm thick, 1500–4000 mm wide and 3000–12000 mm long. Confirm anything above 150 mm against mill capability.
- Where can I buy WStE420 steel plate?
- SHH STEEL supplies DIN 17102 WStE420 to the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia on FOB Shanghai or CIF Houston / Rotterdam / Jebel Ali. Ask for mill rolling, stock, dual P420NH marking when eligible, or EN 10204 3.2.
- Do I need EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 for WStE420?
- N 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when the destination file or PED package requires third-party inspection. Write 3.2 on the purchase order if you need it.
- What is the density of WStE 420?
- 7.85 g/cm³.
