DIN 17102 WStE355 Steel Plate | WStE355 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 WStE355 (1.0565) Steel ?
DIN 17102 WStE355, also written WStE 355, WSTE355, DIN17102 WStE355 and WStE355 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The W prefix means Warm — elevated-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is still 355 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still 490–630 MPa. What changes versus StE355 is the service idea: WStE355 is the grade buyers name when the structure or vessel must keep strength at higher operating temperature. The usual modern comparison is P355NH (EN 10028-3, material no. 1.0565). SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “355 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 WStE355. Do not ship StE355 against a WStE355 drawing because both look like 355 MPa plate. Do not ship TStE355 against a WStE355 drawing because T is low-temperature quality, not warm quality.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work usually names P355NH. New structural work usually names S355N / S355NL under EN 10025-3. Replacement projects still name WStE355 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. Grade 70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. WStE355 is 355 MPa yield fine-grain plate with a warm-service designation. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in structural steel plates, high strength low alloy plates and next to pressure vessel steel plates. ASME carbon comparisons belong on ASME SA516, not as automatic substitutes.
Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 WStE355 / WStE 355 uses the same 355 chemistry family as StE355. TStE355 and EStE355 tighten C, P and S. Do not treat a looser StE heat as WStE just by changing the stamp.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 WStE355 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.20 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.50 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.90 – 1.65 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.05 |
| Vanadium (V), max | 0.10 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.12 |
Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis. If the order dual-names P355NH, residuals and P/S must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens P and S, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 355 family. Elevated-temperature proof stress is why the W letter exists. When the order dual-names P355NH, elevated-temperature values come from EN 10028-3 Table for P355NH, not from a copied StE355 room-temperature coupon.
Room-temperature tensile and yield — DIN 17102 WStE355 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Elongation min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 355 | 490 – 630 (≤70 mm band) | 22 |
| 16 – 35 | 345 | 490 – 630 | 22 |
| 35 – 50 | 335 | 490 – 630 | 22 |
| 50 – 60 | 325 | 490 – 630 | 22 |
| 60 – 70 | 315 | 490 – 630 | 22 |
| 70 – 85 | 305 | 480 – 620 | 22 |

| 100 – 125 | confirm edition | 460 – 600 | confirm edition |
| 125 – 150 | 295 | 450 – 590 | confirm edition |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ | — |
Do not quote 355 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 490–630 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70 or SA612 steel plate.
Impact for WStE355 is not the TStE / EStE low-temperature package. P355NH comparison impact is commonly −20 °C. Write the test temperature on the order. If the drawing names −50 °C, the grade is probably TStE355 or EStE355, not WStE355.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE355 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P355N / S355N |
| WStE355 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P355NH |
| TStE355 | Low temperature (Tief) | P355NL1 / S355NL |
| EStE355 | Special low temperature | P355NL2 |
Same 355 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and different design temperature. SHH STEEL will not ship WStE355 against a TStE355 impact temperature without a written change.

Elevated-Temperature Fine-Grain Service
DIN 17102 WStE355 / WStE 355 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness plus a warm-service designation: process vessels, boilers, heat exchangers, hot-liquid piping supports and steelwork still calculated to the old German book. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA537 Cl.1 or SA204 Gr.B.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.2. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
WStE355 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel with microalloy limits. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match 490–630 MPa tensile fine-grain practice, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 WStE355 / WStE 355 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 WStE355 (and WStE 355 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact and elevated-temperature proof stress when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P355NH is available only when chemistry, tensile, impact and elevated-temperature values all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for WStE355 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 WStE355 / WStE 355 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. Warm quality is not a −50 °C grade.
Elevated-temperature proof stress. Required when dual-naming P355NH or when the calculation uses warm allowable stress.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
