DIN 17102 EStE355 Steel Plate | EStE355 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 EStE355 (1.1106) Steel ?
DIN 17102 EStE355, also written EStE 355, ESTE355, DIN17102 EStE355 and EStE355 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The E prefix is the special low-temperature quality in this book — colder and cleaner than TStE355. Yield in the thin band is still 355 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still 490–630 MPa. What changes is chemistry and the impact package. Carbon heat is typically 0.15% max. Phosphorus and sulfur are tighter than TStE355. The usual modern comparison is P355NL2 (EN 10028-3, material no. 1.1106). SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “355 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 EStE355 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE355, WStE355 or TStE355 against an EStE355 drawing because all four look like 355 MPa plate. EStE355 exists because the buyer needs the coldest toughness package in the 355 family, not only a Tief stamp.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work usually names P355NL2. New structural work that needs −50 °C often stops at S355NL under EN 10025-3. Replacement projects still name EStE355 when an old German calculation, PED file or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. Grade 70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. EStE355 is 355 MPa yield fine-grain plate with the special low-temperature designation. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use nickel. EStE355 uses fine grain, low residuals and normalize. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 EStE355 / EStE 355 is the cleanest 355 column in this book.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 EStE355 (typical cast / ladle limits)

| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.05 |
| Vanadium (V), max | 0.10 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.12 |
Compare the family:
| Grade | C max | P max | S max |

| TStE355 | 0.18 | 0.030 | 0.025 |
| EStE355 | 0.15 | 0.025 | 0.015 |
Do not ship a TStE355 heat as EStE355. If the order dual-names P355NL2, residuals and P/S must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens sulfur below 0.015%, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 355 family. Special low-temperature impact is why the E letter exists.
Room-temperature tensile and yield — DIN 17102 EStE355 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Elongation min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 355 | 490 – 630 (≤70 mm band) | 22 |
| 16 – 35 | 345 | 490 – 630 | 22 |
| 35 – 50 | 335 | 490 – 630 | 22 |

| 125 – 150 | 295 | 450 – 590 | confirm edition |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ | — |
Do not quote 355 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 490–630 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70 or SA662 Gr.C.
Impact for EStE355 is the special low-temperature package. P355NL2 comparison is commonly −50 °C with the tighter NL2 chemistry. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. Do not assume a TStE355 −40 °C coupon covers EStE355.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE355 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P355N / S355N |
| WStE355 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P355NH |
| TStE355 | Low temperature (Tief) | P355NL1 / S355NL |
| EStE355 | Special low temperature | P355NL2 |
Same 355 MPa yield idea. E is not a marketing letter on TStE355. E has lower carbon, lower P and S, and a colder quality idea. SHH STEEL will not ship TStE355 against an EStE355 purchase order without a written change.

Special Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service
DIN 17102 EStE355 / EStE 355 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need the coldest fine-grain package in the 355 family: low-temperature tanks, process equipment, steelwork in cold climates and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.B or SA537 Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use 3.5Ni. EStE355 uses fine grain, 0.15% max carbon and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.3. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
EStE355 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel with the lowest C / P / S in the 355 family. That helps weldability versus StE355, but welding is still production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match 490–630 MPa tensile fine-grain practice, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 EStE355 / EStE 355 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a special low-temperature quality.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 EStE355 (and EStE 355 if requested); heat number; heat analysis including the tighter C / P / S; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P355NL2 is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for EStE355 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 EStE355 / EStE 355 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason EStE355 exists. Write the temperature explicitly. Do not leave “low temperature” as a note.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Restricted residuals. Some European files copy EN 10028-3 NL2 options onto EStE355. Write those options on the order.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
