Conclusion

What is DIN 17102 EStE255 (1.1103) Steel?

DIN 17102 EStE255, also written EStE 255, ESTE255, DIN17102 EStE255 and EStE255 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The E prefix is the special low-temperature quality — colder and cleaner than TStE255. Yield in the lowest thickness band is still 255 MPa. Tensile on thinner product is still typically 360–480 MPa. What changes is chemistry and the impact package. Carbon, phosphorus and sulfur are the tightest of the 255 family. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.

A purchase order that only says “255 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 EStE255 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE255, WStE255 or TStE255 against an EStE255 drawing because all four look like 255 MPa plate. Do not treat EStE255 as EStE285. EStE285 is the next strength step and is the grade usually compared with P275NL2.

DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work that wants special low-temperature fine-grain steel at this strength idea usually names P275NL2. That EN name lines up more cleanly with EStE285, not EStE255. Replacement projects still name EStE255 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.

This page is not DIN 17100 St37-3. It is not SA516 Gr.55 and not SA516 Gr.70. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A or SA203 Gr.D. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition

DIN 17102 EStE255 / EStE 255 is the cleanest 255 column in this book.

Do not ship a TStE255 heat as EStE255. EStE355 manganese is 0.90–1.65. EStE255 manganese starts at 0.50. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens sulfur below 0.015%, write that on the order.

Mechanical Properties

Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 255 family. Special low-temperature impact is why the E letter exists.

Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 EStE255 (typical published idea)

PropertyTypical requirement
Yield ReH, lowest thickness band255 MPa min
Tensile Rm, thinner product360 – 480 MPa
Elongationconfirm edition / thickness
Density7.85 g/cm³

Yield and tensile both step down with thickness. Confirm the ordered thickness against the named edition of DIN 17102. Do not quote 255 MPa yield on a thick plate without reading the thickness column. Do not treat 360–480 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.55, SA285 Gr.A or SA662 Gr.A.

Impact for EStE255 is the special low-temperature package. P275NL2 comparison is commonly −50 °C with the tighter NL2 chemistry idea. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. Do not assume a TStE255 coupon covers EStE255.

Special Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 255 MPa

DIN 17102 EStE255 / EStE 255 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need the coldest fine-grain package at the lowest DIN 17102 yield step: lighter low-temperature tanks, cold-climate steelwork and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not a high-strength substitute for EStE355. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.C or SA537 Cl.1.

SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.B or SA203 Gr.F. Those grades use nickel. EStE255 uses fine grain, low residuals and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.3. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.

Weldability

EStE255 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel with the lowest C / P / S in the 255 family. That helps weldability versus StE255, but welding is still production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.

Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 360–480 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 EStE255 / EStE 255 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a special low-temperature quality.

If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.B. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists DIN 17102 EStE255 (and EStE 255 if requested); heat number; heat analysis including the tighter C / P / S; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P275NL2 is not automatic. That EN name sits closer to EStE285.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for EStE255 fine grain steel:

  • Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
  • Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
  • Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
  • Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits

Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.

Supplementary Requirements

Most export DIN 17102 EStE255 / EStE 255 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.

Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason EStE255 exists. Write the temperature explicitly.

Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.

NDE. UT per the named method.

Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.

Restricted residuals. Some European files copy EN 10028-3 NL2 options onto EStE255. Write those options on the order.

Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.

Equivalent Material Grades

These names are project-comparison grades. They are not automatic substitutes.
