DIN 17102 StE380 Steel Plate | StE380 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 StE380 Steel?
DIN 17102 StE380, also written StE 380, STE380, DIN17102 StE380 and StE380 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. StE means the basic / room-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is 380 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is typically 510–650 MPa. This grade sits above StE355 and below StE420. Modern EN books jump from P355N / S355N to P420N / S420N. StE380 is the old German step that stayed between those two. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “380 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 StE380. Do not ship StE355 against a StE380 drawing and call 25 MPa extra yield a free upgrade. Do not ship StE420 against a StE380 drawing without a written change.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European work usually picks S355N / P355N or S420N / P420N under EN 10025-3. There is no equally clean single EN name for StE380. Replacement projects still name StE380 when the original German file stays on that number.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. DIN 17100 is ordinary structural steel. DIN 17102 is fine-grain, killed, normally normalized. This page is not SA516 Gr.70. Grade 70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. StE380 is 380 MPa yield fine-grain plate. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 StE380 / StE 380 uses a manganese band close to the 355 family.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 StE380 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.20 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.50 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 – 1.65 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.05 |
| Vanadium (V), max | 0.10 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.12 |
StE355 carbon heat is 0.20% max with Mn 0.90–1.65. StE380 keeps a similar manganese idea and uses the same residual caps. TStE380 and EStE380 tighten P and S. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens P and S, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Yield starts at 380 MPa at ≤16 mm and falls as thickness rises.
Tensile and Yield — DIN 17102 StE380 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 380 | 510 – 650 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 370 | 510 – 650 |
| 35 – 50 | 360 | 510 – 650 |
| 50 – 70 | 350 | 510 – 650 |
| 70 – 100 | 340 | 500 – 640 |
| 100 – 150 | 330 | 490 – 630 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 380 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 510–650 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA612 steel plate or SA737 Gr.C.
Impact is the reason buyers pick DIN 17102 instead of DIN 17100. StE380 is the basic quality. If the drawing names −20 °C or −50 °C, the order may actually need TStE380 or EStE380. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the purchase order.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 380
| Grade | Quality idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| StE380 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | This page |
| WStE380 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | Same yield idea, warm service |
| TStE380 | Low temperature (Tief) | Same yield idea, colder impact |
| EStE380 | Special low temperature | Tightest C / P / S in the 380 family |
Same 380 MPa yield idea. Different impact and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship StE380 against a TStE380 impact temperature without a written change.

Fine-Grain Structural Service at 380 MPa
DIN 17102 StE380 / StE 380 is selected when the drawing wants fine-grain, weldable, normalized plate at the 380 MPa step: frames, tanks, machinery and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not a free substitute for StE420. It is not automatically a Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA537 Cl.1 or SA738 Gr.A.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
StE380 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel at a higher strength step than StE355. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 510–650 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 StE380 / StE 380 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 StE380 (and StE 380 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P420N is not automatic. That EN name sits closer to StE420.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for StE380 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 StE380 / StE 380 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. If the temperature is −40 °C or −50 °C, confirm whether the grade should be TStE380 or EStE380.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
