DIN 17102 TStE500 Steel Plate | TStE500 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 TStE500 Steel?
DIN 17102 TStE500, also written TStE 500, TSTE500, DIN17102 TStE500 and TStE500 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The T prefix means Tief — low-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is still 500 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still typically 610–770 MPa. This is the highest common Tief step in DIN 17102. Conversion tables usually put it next to P500NL1 / S500NL when those names exist on the project file. It is not TStE460. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “500 NL fine grain” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 TStE500 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE500 or WStE500 against a TStE500 drawing. Do not ship TStE460 because the yield step is wrong.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European work often stops at S460NL / P460NL1 under EN 10025-3 or moves to TMCP / QT books. Replacement projects still name TStE500 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 TStE500 / TStE 500 tightens phosphorus and sulfur versus StE500 / WStE500. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — DIN 17102 TStE500 (typical limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.18 | 0.20 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.60 | 0.10 – 0.65 |

| Vanadium (V), max | 0.22 | 0.24 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.24 | 0.26 |
StE500 / WStE500 use C 0.20 max, P 0.035 and S 0.030. EStE500 is tighter still. Do not ship a StE500 heat as TStE500. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 500 family. Low-temperature impact is why the T letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 TStE500 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 500 | 610 – 770 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 490 | 610 – 770 |
| 35 – 50 | 480 | 610 – 770 |
| 50 – 70 | 470 | 610 – 770 |
| 70 – 100 | 460 | 600 – 760 |
| 100 – 150 | 450 | 590 – 750 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 500 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 610–770 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.A or SA285 Gr.B.
Impact for TStE500 is the low-temperature package. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. If the drawing names a still colder package, the grade may be EStE500, not TStE500.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 500
| Grade | Quality idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| StE500 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | Same yield idea |
| WStE500 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | Warm service |
| TStE500 | Low temperature (Tief) | This page |
| EStE500 | Special low temperature | Tightest C / P / S |
Same 500 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship TStE500 against an EStE500 impact temperature without a written change.

Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 500 MPa
DIN 17102 TStE500 / TStE 500 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness at low temperature at the 500 MPa yield step: tanks, cold-climate steelwork and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not QT S500QL. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.C or SA537 Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use nickel. TStE500 uses fine grain, tighter residuals and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
TStE500 is killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel with tighter P / S than StE500. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 610–770 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 TStE500 / TStE 500 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a low-temperature quality.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 TStE500 (and TStE 500 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to an EN 500 NL name is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit that EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for TStE500 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 TStE500 / TStE 500 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason TStE500 exists. Write −20 °C, −40 °C or −50 °C explicitly.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
