DIN 17102 TStE255 Steel Plate | TStE255 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 TStE255 (1.0463 Steel?
DIN 17102 TStE255, also written TStE 255, TSTE255, DIN17102 TStE255 and TStE255 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The T prefix means Tief — low-temperature quality. Yield in the lowest thickness band is still 255 MPa. Tensile on thinner product is still typically 360–480 MPa. What changes versus StE255 and WStE255 is the toughness package and tighter phosphorus and sulfur. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “255 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 TStE255 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE255 or WStE255 against a TStE255 drawing because all three look like 255 MPa plate. Do not treat TStE255 as TStE285. TStE285 is the next strength step and is the grade usually compared with P275NL1.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European structural work that wants low-temperature fine-grain steel at this strength idea usually names S275NL under EN 10025-3. New pressure work usually names P275NL1. Those EN names line up more cleanly with TStE285, not TStE255. Replacement projects still name TStE255 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St37-3. It is not SA516 Gr.60 and not SA516 Gr.70. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in structural steel plates, high strength low alloy plates and next to pressure vessel steel plates. ASME carbon comparisons belong on ASME SA516 and ASME SA662, not as automatic substitutes.
Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 TStE255 / TStE 255 tightens phosphorus and sulfur versus StE255 / WStE255. Carbon stays in the 255 family.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 TStE255 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.18 |
| Silicon (Si), max | 0.40 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 – 1.30 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.030 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.025 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.03 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.05 |
StE255 / WStE255 use P 0.035 and S 0.030. EStE255 is tighter still. Do not ship a StE255 heat as TStE255. TStE355 manganese is 0.90–1.65. TStE255 manganese starts at 0.50. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens P and S further, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 255 family. Low-temperature impact is why the T letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 TStE255 (typical published idea)
| Property | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Yield ReH, lowest thickness band | 255 MPa min |
| Tensile Rm, thinner product | 360 – 480 MPa |
| Elongation | confirm edition / thickness |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Yield and tensile both step down with thickness. Confirm the ordered thickness against the named edition of DIN 17102. Do not quote 255 MPa yield on a thick plate without reading the thickness column. Do not treat 360–480 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.55, SA285 Gr.A or SA662 Gr.A.
Impact for TStE255 is the low-temperature package. S275NL / P275NL1 comparison impact is commonly −20 °C to −50 °C depending on the EN name. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. If the drawing names a still colder package, the grade may be EStE255, not TStE255.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 255
| Grade | Quality idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| StE255 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | Same yield idea |
| WStE255 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | Warm service |
| TStE255 | Low temperature (Tief) | This page |
| EStE255 | Special low temperature | Tightest C / P / S |
Same 255 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship TStE255 against an EStE255 impact temperature without a written change.

| ASTM A36 steel plate | Structural carbon | Not DIN 17102 | No |
SA285 Gr.C, SA299 Gr.A and SA737 Gr.B are also vessel or HSLA plates. None of them is TStE255.
Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 255 MPa
DIN 17102 TStE255 / TStE 255 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness at low temperature at the lowest DIN 17102 yield step: lighter tanks, cold-climate steelwork and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not a high-strength substitute for TStE355. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.60, SA662 Gr.A or SA537 Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use nickel for toughness. TStE255 uses fine grain, tighter residuals and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
TStE255 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel with tighter P / S than StE255. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 360–480 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 TStE255 / TStE 255 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a low-temperature quality.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.A or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 TStE255 (and TStE 255 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S275NL or P275NL1 is not automatic. Those EN names sit closer to TStE285.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for TStE255 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 TStE255 / TStE 255 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason TStE255 exists. Write −20 °C, −40 °C or −50 °C explicitly.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
