DIN 17102 TStE380 Steel Plate | TStE380 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 TStE380 Steel?
DIN 17102 TStE380, also written TStE 380, TSTE380, DIN17102 TStE380 and TStE380 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The T prefix means Tief — low-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is still 380 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is still typically 510–650 MPa. This grade sits above TStE355 and below TStE420. Modern EN books jump from S355NL / P355NL1 to S420NL / P420NL1. TStE380 is the old German Tief step that stayed between those two. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “380 fine grain low temp” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 TStE380 and the impact temperature. Do not ship StE380 or WStE380 against a TStE380 drawing. Do not ship TStE355 or TStE420 because the yield step is wrong.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European work usually picks S355NL / P355NL1 or S420NL / P420NL1 under EN 10025-3. There is no equally clean single EN name for TStE380. Replacement projects still name TStE380 when the original German file stays on that number.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. It is not SA516 Gr.70. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 TStE380 / TStE 380 tightens phosphorus and sulfur versus StE380 / WStE380. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — DIN 17102 TStE380 (typical limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.18 | 0.20 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.50 | 0.10 – 0.55 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 – 1.65 | 0.95 – 1.70 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.030 | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.025 | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 | 0.022 |

| Vanadium (V), max | 0.10 | 0.12 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.12 | 0.14 |
StE380 / WStE380 use C 0.20 max, P 0.035 and S 0.030. EStE380 is tighter still. Do not ship a StE380 heat as TStE380. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 380 family. Low-temperature impact is why the T letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 TStE380 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 380 | 510 – 650 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 370 | 510 – 650 |
| 35 – 50 | 360 | 510 – 650 |
| 50 – 70 | 350 | 510 – 650 |
| 70 – 100 | 340 | 500 – 640 |
| 100 – 150 | 330 | 490 – 630 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 380 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 510–650 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.A or SA285 Gr.B.
Impact for TStE380 is the low-temperature package. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the order. If the drawing names a still colder package, the grade may be EStE380, not TStE380.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 380
| Grade | Quality idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| StE380 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | Same yield idea |
| WStE380 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | Warm service |
| TStE380 | Low temperature (Tief) | This page |
| EStE380 | Special low temperature | Tightest C / P / S |
Same 380 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship TStE380 against an EStE380 impact temperature without a written change.

Low-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 380 MPa
DIN 17102 TStE380 / TStE 380 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness at low temperature at the 380 MPa step: tanks, cold-climate steelwork and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not a free substitute for TStE420. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA662 Gr.C or SA537 Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those grades use nickel. TStE380 uses fine grain, tighter residuals and normalize. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
TStE380 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel with tighter P / S than StE380. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 510–650 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 TStE380 / TStE 380 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement and is a poor fit for a low-temperature quality.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 TStE380 (and TStE 380 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact at the named temperature. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S420NL or P420NL1 is not automatic. Those EN names sit closer to TStE420.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for TStE380 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 TStE380 / TStE 380 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. This is the reason TStE380 exists. Write −20 °C, −40 °C or −50 °C explicitly.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
Equivalent Material Grades
These names are project-comparison grades. They are not automatic substitutes.
