DIN 17102 WStE255 Steel Plate | WStE255 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 WStE255 (1.0462) Steel?
DIN 17102 WStE255, also written WStE 255, WSTE255, DIN17102 WStE255 and WStE255 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The W prefix means Warm — elevated-temperature quality. Yield in the lowest thickness band is still 255 MPa. Tensile on thinner product is still typically 360–480 MPa. What changes versus StE255 is the service idea: WStE255 is the grade buyers name when the structure or vessel must keep strength at higher operating temperature at the lowest DIN 17102 yield step. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “255 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 WStE255. Do not ship StE255 against a WStE255 drawing because both look like 255 MPa plate. Do not ship TStE255 against a WStE255 drawing because T is low-temperature quality, not warm quality. Do not treat WStE255 as WStE285. WStE285 is the next strength step and is the grade usually compared with P275NH.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work that wants warm fine-grain steel at this strength idea usually names P275NH. That EN name lines up more cleanly with WStE285, not WStE255. Replacement projects still name WStE255 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St37-2. It is not SA516 Gr.60 and not SA516 Gr.70. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in structural steel plates, high strength low alloy plates and next to pressure vessel steel plates. ASME carbon comparisons belong on ASME SA516 and ASME SA515, not as automatic substitutes.
Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 WStE255 / WStE 255 uses the same 255 chemistry family as StE255. TStE255 and EStE255 tighten P and S.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 WStE255 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.18 |
| Silicon (Si), max | 0.40 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 – 1.30 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.03 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.05 |
WStE355 manganese is 0.90–1.65. WStE255 manganese starts at 0.50. Do not ship a 355 heat as WStE255 because a coupon came in low. If the order tries to dual-name P275NH, remember that EN name sits closer to WStE285. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens P and S, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 255 family. Elevated-temperature proof stress is why the W letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 WStE255 (typical published idea)
| Property | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Yield ReH, lowest thickness band | 255 MPa min |
| Tensile Rm, thinner product | 360 – 480 MPa |
| Elongation | confirm edition / thickness |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Yield and tensile both step down with thickness. Confirm the ordered thickness against the named edition of DIN 17102. Do not quote 255 MPa yield on a thick plate without reading the thickness column. Do not treat 360–480 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.55, SA285 Gr.A or SA662 Gr.A.
Impact for WStE255 is not the TStE / EStE low-temperature package. Write the test temperature on the order. If the drawing names −50 °C, the grade is probably TStE255 or EStE255, not WStE255. If the calculation uses elevated-temperature allowable stress, name the proof-stress temperature on the order.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 255
| Grade | Quality idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| StE255 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | Same yield idea |
| WStE255 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | This page |
| TStE255 | Low temperature (Tief) | Colder impact |
| EStE255 | Special low temperature | Tightest C / P / S |
Same 255 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and different design temperature. SHH STEEL will not ship WStE255 against a TStE255 impact temperature without a written change.

Elevated-Temperature Fine-Grain Service at 255 MPa
DIN 17102 WStE255 / WStE 255 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness plus a warm-service designation at the lowest DIN 17102 yield step: lighter process vessels, hot-liquid piping supports and steelwork still calculated to the old German book. It is not a high-strength substitute for WStE355. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.60, SA515 Gr.65 or SA204 Gr.B.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.2. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
WStE255 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel at the lowest warm strength step in this book. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 360–480 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 WStE255 / WStE 255 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.A or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 WStE255 (and WStE 255 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact and elevated-temperature proof stress when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P275NH is not automatic. That EN name sits closer to WStE285.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for WStE255 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 WStE255 / WStE 255 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. Warm quality is not a −50 °C grade.
Elevated-temperature proof stress. Required when the calculation uses warm allowable stress.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
