DIN 17102 WStE285 Steel Plate | WStE285 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 WStE285 Steel?
DIN 17102 WStE285, also written WStE 285, WSTE285, DIN17102 WStE285 and WStE285 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The W prefix means Warm — elevated-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is still 285 MPa. Tensile on thinner product is still typically 390–510 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 warm line that conversion tables map to P275NH (EN 10028-3, material no. 1.0487). It is not WStE255 and not WStE355. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “275 fine grain warm” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 WStE285. Do not ship StE285 against a WStE285 drawing because StE is basic quality. Do not ship TStE285 against a WStE285 drawing because T is low-temperature quality. Do not ship WStE255 or WStE355 because the yield step is wrong.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European pressure work usually names P275NH. Replacement projects still name WStE285 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St44-3. It is not SA516 Gr.60 and not SA516 Gr.70. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in structural steel plates, high strength low alloy plates and next to pressure vessel steel plates. ASME carbon comparisons belong on ASME SA516 and ASME SA515, not as automatic substitutes.
Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 WStE285 / WStE 285 uses the same 285 chemistry family as StE285. TStE285 and EStE285 tighten P and S.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 WStE285 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.18 |
| Silicon (Si), max | 0.40 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.60 – 1.40 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.03 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.05 |
WStE255 manganese is 0.50–1.30. WStE355 manganese is 0.90–1.65. Do not ship a 355 heat as WStE285 because a coupon came in low. If the order dual-names P275NH, residuals and P/S must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Room-temperature yield and tensile follow the 285 family. Elevated-temperature proof stress is why the W letter exists.
Room-temperature properties — DIN 17102 WStE285 (typical published idea)
| Thickness idea | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 mm | 285 | 390 – 510 |
| Increasing thickness | steps down | steps down |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Confirm the ordered thickness against the named edition. When the order dual-names P275NH, elevated-temperature values come from EN 10028-3, not from a copied StE285 room-temperature coupon. Do not treat 390–510 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.60, SA515 Gr.60 or SA204 Gr.A.
Impact for WStE285 is not the TStE / EStE low-temperature package. P275NH comparison impact is commonly −20 °C. Write the test temperature on the order. If the drawing names −50 °C, the grade is probably TStE285 or EStE285, not WStE285.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 285
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE285 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P275N / S275N |
| WStE285 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P275NH |
| TStE285 | Low temperature (Tief) | P275NL1 / S275NL |
| EStE285 | Special low temperature | P275NL2 |
Same 285 MPa yield idea. Different impact package and different design temperature. SHH STEEL will not ship WStE285 against a TStE285 impact temperature without a written change.

SA203 Gr.A, SA299 Gr.B and SA737 Gr.B are vessel or HSLA plates. None of them is WStE285.
Elevated-Temperature Fine-Grain Service
DIN 17102 WStE285 / WStE 285 is selected for welded structures and pressure equipment that need fine-grain toughness plus a warm-service designation at the 285 MPa yield step: process vessels, boilers, heat exchangers and steelwork still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to P275NH. It is not automatically an ASME Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA515 Gr.70 or SA204 Gr.C.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.2. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 or SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
WStE285 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 390–510 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.Q. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 WStE285 / WStE 285 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.A or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 WStE285 (and WStE 285 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact and elevated-temperature proof stress when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to P275NH is available only when chemistry, tensile, impact and elevated-temperature values all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for WStE285 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 WStE285 / WStE 285 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. Warm quality is not a −50 °C grade.
Elevated-temperature proof stress. Required when dual-naming P275NH or when the calculation uses warm allowable stress. Name the test temperature.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.

FAQ
- What names are used for DIN 17102 WStE285?
- Buyers write DIN 17102 WStE285, WStE 285, WSTE285, DIN17102 WStE285 and WStE285 steel plate. Some inquiries only say P275NH and expect the mill to guess the DIN name. SHH STEEL prints the exact wording on the purchase order and on the certificate. If you need both names, write both.
- What does the W in WStE285 mean?
- Warm. Elevated-temperature quality. The plate is still normalized fine-grain steel at 285 MPa yield. The W letter tells the mill and the designer that elevated-temperature proof stress and a warm-service impact package belong on the order. It does not mean the plate is Cr-Mo alloy.
- What is the yield strength of WStE285?
- 285 MPa minimum at ≤16 mm. Yield falls as thickness rises. Tensile on thinner product is typically 390–510 MPa. Confirm the thickness column in the named edition before you use 285 MPa in a calculation for thick plate.
- Is WStE285 the same as P275NH?
- P275NH is the usual modern comparison (material no. 1.0487). Chemistry and tensile are close. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact and elevated-temperature proof stress all fit the named EN 10028-3 edition. A DIN-only certificate is not automatically a PED P275NH file.
- Is WStE285 the same as StE285 or TStE285?
- No. StE285 is basic / room-temperature quality and maps to P275N / S275N. TStE285 is low-temperature quality and maps to P275NL1 / S275NL. WStE285 is elevated-temperature quality and maps to P275NH. Yield numbers look the same. Impact temperature and proof-stress testing do not.
- How is WStE285 different from WStE255 and WStE355?
- All three are Warm quality. WStE255 is the lower yield step. WStE355 is the higher yield step at 355 MPa and 490–630 MPa tensile. WStE285 is the 285 MPa / 390–510 MPa step. Do not swap them because the letter W matches.
- Does WStE285 replace SA516 Grade 70 or SA515 Grade 70?
- No. SA516 Gr.70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. SA515 Grade 70 is intermediate/high-temperature carbon vessel plate. WStE285 is DIN fine-grain plate. A Section VIII vessel should name an ASME or ASTM grade unless the specification explicitly accepts DIN 17102.
- What impact test should I write on a WStE285 order?
- Write the temperature, energy, location and orientation. Do not write only “impact tested.” Warm quality is not a −50 °C grade. If you need −40 °C or −50 °C, the grade is probably TStE285 or EStE285. If you need elevated-temperature proof stress, write that temperature as well.
- Can SHH STEEL ship DIN 17102 WStE285 outside Asia?
- Yes. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner. We supply this plate to the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia on FOB Shanghai or CIF Houston / Rotterdam / Jebel Ali. Inquiry packages can be prepared for Houston, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Jebel Ali, Dammam and Singapore documentation practice.
- What is the delivery time for WStE285?
- Ex-stock about 5–7 days, subject to warehouse size and cutting. Standard mill normalize about 45 days. Special heat treatment, simulated PWHT, extra NDE or EN 10204 3.2 inspection about 2 months.
- Can SHH STEEL issue EN 10204 3.2 for WStE285?
- Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when written on the order. Third-party inspectors can attend before loading for US, European or Middle East projects.
