What is DIN 17102 StE285 Steel ?

DIN 17102 StE285, also written StE 285, STE285, DIN17102 StE285 and StE285 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. StE means the basic / room-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is 285 MPa. Tensile on thinner product is typically 390–510 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 line that conversion tables map to P275N (EN 10028-3, material no. 1.0486) and S275N (EN 10025-3). It is not StE255. It is not StE355. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.

A purchase order that only says “275 fine grain” or “P275N equivalent” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 StE285. Do not ship StE255 against a StE285 drawing because 255 is the lower step. Do not ship StE355 against a StE285 drawing because 355 is the higher step.

DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European structural work usually names S275N / S275NL under EN 10025-3. New pressure work usually names P275N / P275NH / P275NL1. Replacement projects still name StE285 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.

This page is not DIN 17100 St44-2. DIN 17100 is ordinary structural steel. DIN 17102 is fine-grain, killed, normally normalized. This page is not SA516 Gr.60 and not SA516 Gr.70. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in structural steel plates and high strength low alloy plates. Vessel comparisons belong next to pressure vessel steel plates and ASME SA516, not as automatic substitutes.

Chemical Composition

DIN 17102 StE285 / StE 285 uses a manganese band between StE255 and StE355.

Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 StE285 (typical cast / ladle limits)

ElementHeat Analysis (%)
Carbon (C), max0.18
Silicon (Si), max0.40
Manganese (Mn)0.60 – 1.40
Phosphorus (P), max0.035
Sulfur (S), max0.030
Nitrogen (N), max0.020
Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain)0.020
Chromium (Cr), max0.30
Copper (Cu), max0.20
Molybdenum (Mo), max0.08
Nickel (Ni), max0.30
Niobium (Nb), max0.03
Nb + Ti + V, max0.05

StE255 manganese is 0.50–1.30. StE355 manganese is 0.90–1.65. Do not ship a 355 heat as StE285 because a coupon came in low. TStE285 and EStE285 tighten P and S. If the order dual-names P275N, residuals must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.

Mechanical Properties

Yield starts at 285 MPa at ≤16 mm and falls as thickness rises. Tensile on thinner product is typically 390–510 MPa.

Tensile and Yield — DIN 17102 StE285 (typical published idea)

Thickness ideaYield ReH min (MPa)Tensile Rm (MPa)
≤16 mm285390 – 510
Increasing thicknesssteps downsteps down
Density7.85 g/cm³7.85 g/cm³

Confirm the ordered thickness against the named edition. Published mill tables sometimes list 265 MPa at thicker bands. That is thickness reduction, not a different grade. Do not treat 390–510 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.60, SA285 Gr.B or SA662 Gr.A.

Impact is the reason buyers pick DIN 17102 instead of DIN 17100. StE285 is the basic quality. If the drawing names −20 °C or −50 °C, the order may actually need TStE285 or EStE285, or a dual EN name such as S275NL / P275NL1. Write the test temperature on the purchase order.

SA203 Gr.A, SA299 Gr.A and SA737 Gr.B are vessel or HSLA plates. None of them is StE285.

Fine-Grain Structural and Vessel-Adjacent Service

DIN 17102 StE285 / StE 285 is selected for welded structures that need fine-grain toughness at the 285 MPa yield step: frames, tanks, machinery and some pressure equipment still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to P275N / S275N. It is not automatically a Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.60, SA662 Gr.B or SA537 Cl.1.

SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.

Weldability

StE285 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.

Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 390–510 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 StE285 / StE 285 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.

If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.A or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists DIN 17102 StE285 (and StE 285 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S275N or P275N is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for StE285 fine grain steel:

  • Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
  • Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
  • Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
  • Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits

Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.

Supplementary Requirements

Most export DIN 17102 StE285 / StE 285 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.

Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. If the temperature is −40 °C or −50 °C, confirm whether the grade should be TStE285 or EStE285.

Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.

NDE. UT per the named method.

Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.

Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.

Equivalent Material Grades

These names are project-comparison grades. They are not automatic substitutes.
