DIN 17102 StE420 Steel Plate | StE420 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 StE420 Steel?
DIN 17102 StE420, also written StE 420, STE420, DIN17102 StE420 and StE420 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. StE means the basic / room-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is 420 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is typically 530–680 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 line that conversion tables map to P420N (EN 10028-3) and S420N (EN 10025-3). It is not StE355 and not StE460. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “420 fine grain” or “P420N equivalent” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 StE420. Do not ship StE380 against a StE420 drawing. Do not ship StE460 against a StE420 drawing without a written change.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European structural work usually names S420N / S420NL under EN 10025-3. New pressure work usually names P420N / P420NH / P420NL1. Replacement projects still name StE420 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. DIN 17100 is ordinary structural steel. DIN 17102 is fine-grain, killed, normally normalized. This page is not SA516 Gr.70. Grade 70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. StE420 is 420 MPa yield fine-grain plate. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 StE420 / StE 420 uses a manganese and microalloy band that supports the 420 MPa yield step. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — DIN 17102 StE420 (typical limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.20 | 0.22 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.50 | 0.10 – 0.55 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 – 1.70 | 0.95 – 1.75 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 | 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 | 0.035 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 | 0.022 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 | 0.018 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 | 0.35 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 | 0.25 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.10 | 0.12 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.80 | 0.85 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.05 | 0.06 |
| Vanadium (V), max | 0.20 | 0.22 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.22 | 0.24 |
StE355 / StE380 manganese is typically 0.90–1.65 with a lower vanadium cap. StE420 allows a higher manganese top and more vanadium to reach 420 MPa. TStE420 and EStE420 tighten P and S. If the order dual-names P420N, residuals must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Yield starts at 420 MPa at ≤16 mm and falls as thickness rises.
Tensile and Yield — DIN 17102 StE420 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 420 | 530 – 680 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 410 | 530 – 680 |
| 35 – 50 | 400 | 530 – 680 |
| 50 – 70 | 390 | 530 – 680 |
| 70 – 100 | 380 | 520 – 670 |
| 100 – 150 | 370 | 510 – 660 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 420 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 530–680 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA737 Gr.C or SA738 Gr.B.
Impact is the reason buyers pick DIN 17102 instead of DIN 17100. StE420 is the basic quality. If the drawing names −20 °C or −50 °C, the order may actually need TStE420 or EStE420, or a dual EN name such as S420NL / P420NL1. Write the test temperature on the purchase order.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 420
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE420 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P420N / S420N |
| WStE420 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P420NH |
| TStE420 | Low temperature (Tief) | P420NL1 / S420NL |
| EStE420 | Special low temperature | P420NL2 |
Same 420 MPa yield idea. Different impact and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship StE420 against a TStE420 impact temperature without a written change.

SA203 Gr.A, SA285 Gr.C and SA299 Gr.A are vessel plates. None of them is StE420.
Fine-Grain Structural and Vessel-Adjacent Service
DIN 17102 StE420 / StE 420 is selected for welded structures that need fine-grain toughness at the 420 MPa yield step: frames, tanks, machinery and some pressure equipment still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to P420N / S420N. It is not automatically a Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA537 Cl.1 or SA738 Gr.A.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
StE420 is killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel at a higher strength step than StE355. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 530–680 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 StE420 / StE 420 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 StE420 (and StE 420 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S420N or P420N is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for StE420 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 StE420 / StE 420 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. If the temperature is −40 °C or −50 °C, confirm whether the grade should be TStE420 or EStE420.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
