EN 10028-3 P275N Steel Plate | P275N Fine Grain Vessel Plate supplier
What is EN 10028-3 P275N Steel?
EN 10028-3 P275N, also searched as P275N steel plate, P275 N, P275N, 1.0486, EN10028-3 P275N and P275N fine grain vessel plate, is the room-temperature quality in the P275 family of EN 10028-3. That book covers weldable fine-grain steels for pressure equipment. The four qualities in the family are:
- P275N — room-temperature quality
- P275NH — elevated-temperature quality
- P275NL1 — low-temperature quality
- P275NL2 — special low-temperature quality
P275N is not P275NH. P275NH carries guaranteed elevated-temperature proof stress. P275N is not P275NL1. P275NL1 is impact-qualified at −40 °C. P275N is not P275NL2. P275NL2 is impact-qualified at −50 °C. P275N is not EN 10028-2 P265GH. P265GH is a different book and a high-temperature carbon grade, not a fine-grain N grade. P275N is not ASTM A516 Grade 60 unless both books are fully met. P275N is not GB/T 713 Q245R unless both books are fully met.
The letter P means pressure equipment. 275 is the minimum yield in MPa for plate up to 16 mm. N means normalized fine-grain quality. Steel number is 1.0486. Delivery is normalized (+N). Grain size is 6 or finer per EN ISO 643. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
To 16 mm, yield is 275 MPa min and tensile is 390–510 MPa. Yield drops with thickness. Impact for the basic N quality is agreed at order; the usual proof temperature is −20 °C. If the drawing needs −40 °C, write P275NL1. If the drawing needs −50 °C, write P275NL2. If the drawing needs elevated-temperature Rp0.2, write P275NH.

CEV is commonly held to about 0.40% max on thin plate (IIW formula). P275NL2 is tighter on P and S. P275NH shares the same family chemistry but adds the elevated-temperature proof table. If the purchase order writes product analysis, SHH STEEL prints both columns. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Typical hardness in the normalized condition is about 140–180 HBW.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search P275N mechanical properties, P275N yield, 1.0486 tensile and P275N impact.

Impact idea for P275N (N quality)
Usual proof temperature for the basic N quality is −20 °C. Typical minimum values used on mill certificates:
| Direction | −20 °C | 0 °C | +20 °C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Longitudinal KV | 40 J | 47 J | 55 J |
| Transverse KV | 27 J | 31 J | 40 J |
Write the test temperature and direction on the order. If the file needs −40 °C, use P275NL1. If the file needs −50 °C, use P275NL2.
A516 Grade 60 is a US vessel comparison, not an automatic P275N certificate. Q245R is a GB vessel comparison with a lower yield name.

Equivalent Material Grades
There is no official one-to-one worldwide swap for P275N. What buyers compare is a 275 MPa normalized vessel plate.
In Europe the official name is EN 10028-3 P275N / 1.0486. Older German talk still says StE285 or WStE285 from DIN 17102. Those DIN names are comparisons, not automatic EN stamps. See DIN 17102 StE285 and DIN 17102 WStE285.
In the United States the usual comparison is ASTM A516 Grade 60 or ASME SA516 Gr.60. A516 Gr.70 is stronger and is closer to P355N. Dual mark only when both books are met.
In Japan compare JIS G3103 SB410 or JIS G3115 SPV235. In China compare GB/T 713 Q245R. Q245R yield is named 245 MPa, not 275 MPa. Q345R is closer to P355N, not P275N.

Fine Grain Vessel Service
Buyers pick P275N when a PED or EN 13445 file wants a normalized fine-grain vessel plate at the 275 MPa yield line and does not need the NH elevated-temperature table or the NL1/NL2 cold table. Search phrases such as P275N steel plate, EN 10028-3 P275N, 1.0486 and P275 N all point here.
It is the wrong plate for a −50 °C tank. That work is P275NL2. It is the wrong plate for a hot header that names Rp0.2 at 300 °C. That work is P275NH or P265GH. It is the wrong plate for a 355 MPa shell. That work is P355N.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, Singapore, Vietnam, Mexico and South America.
Weldability
P275N is killed fine-grain C-Mn plate with a controlled CEV. Treat welding as production welding for pressure equipment. Preheat, heat input and interpass have to stay inside a written WPS.
Typical consumables for this strength line are EN ISO 2560-A E 42 / E 46 rutile-basic electrodes, or matching G3Si1 / G4Si1 solid wires for MAG, or basic submerged-arc combinations qualified on the same heat family. A procedure written for P355NH is a higher-strength family. A procedure written for A516 Gr.70 is a US book, not EN 10028-3. After heavy forming, renormalize if the strain exceeds the mill limit. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data and CEV for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for P275N is normalized (+N).
Normalizing is typically 880–950 °C, with hold time about 1 minute per millimetre after the plate is through-soaked, then air cool. Fine-grain aluminium control is what the N quality is built on. As-rolled plate cannot be certified P275N.
If the fabricator hot-forms outside the mill window, a new normalize is usually required. Simulated PWHT coupons are an extra. Write the soak temperature and time if the vessel cycle must be copied on the test piece.
The certificate lists EN 10028-3 P275N; steel number 1.0486; heat number; ladle analysis and product analysis when ordered; tensile to the thickness table; +N delivery; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P275N fine grain vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm, heavier plate by enquiry up to 250 mm
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Cut-to-size shells, heads and courses are available. Browse more vessel sizes on pressure vessel steel plates and the products index.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for EN 10028-3 P275N follow EN 10029 unless the purchase order names another class. Class A is the usual mill default. Class B or C is an extra.
Typical EN 10029 Class A thickness idea for P275N
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Usual minus (mm) | Usual plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 8 | −0.4 | +0.7 |
| 8 – 15 | −0.5 | +0.8 |
| 15 – 25 | −0.6 | +0.9 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.7 | +1.0 |
| 40 – 80 | −0.9 | +1.3 |
| 80 – 150 | −1.1 | +1.7 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows EN 10029 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on P275N unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
P275N already defines chemistry, +N and the 275 MPa thickness table. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.
Book name. Write EN 10028-3 P275N / 1.0486. Do not write P275NH if the file does not need the elevated-temperature table.
Impact details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation. N quality is not NL1.
Product analysis. Write it if the file needs the second chemistry column.
Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.
NDE. EN 10160 ultrasonic class as named.
HIC / NACE. Only when the process fluid needs it.
Simulated PWHT. Write soak temperature and time.
Identification and stamping. Heat number, P275N, 1.0486, thickness and mill logo.
Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| Process vessels | P275N / 1.0486 shells and heads |
| Storage tanks | Fine-grain courses from SHH STEEL |
| Heat exchangers | P275N channels and covers |
| Water and steam drums | Normalized 275 MPa vessel plate |
| Comparison vs Q245R | P275N next to Q245R |
| Comparison vs A516-60 | P275N next to A516 Gr.60 |
P275N is the plate for a PED file that wants normalized fine-grain vessel plate at the 275 MPa line. It is the wrong plate for a −50 °C ethylene tank. That work is P275NL2 or a 9Ni grade such as X8Ni9. It is the wrong plate for ordinary building frames. That work sits on EN 10025-2 S275JR.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: print P275N / 1.0486, keep +N on the certificate, and do not ship P275NH or P275NL1 when the drawing says P275N. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices P275N from first-line mills, reports ladle and product analysis as ordered, records the thickness table, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the book on the order. P275N is not P355N. P275N is not P265GH. P275N is not Q245R unless both books are met. If the drawing says −50 °C, we will move the inquiry to P275NL2 instead of forcing P275N.
FAQ
