EN 10028-4 X8Ni9 Steel Plate | X8Ni9 9Ni -196°C Vessel Plate supplier
What is EN 10028-4 X8Ni9 Steel Plate?
X8Ni9 is the main 9Ni grade in EN 10028-4. Buyers search EN 10028-4 X8Ni9, X8Ni9 steel plate, 1.5662, X8Ni9 9Ni -196°C vessel plate, X8Ni9 LNG and X8Ni9 supplier. Nickel is about 8.50–9.50%. That is why the title says 9Ni. This is not 12Ni14. 12Ni14 is 3.5Ni. This is not X12Ni5. X12Ni5 is 5Ni. This is not X7Ni9. X7Ni9 is the sister 9Ni name with a tighter carbon band. This is not P355NL2. P355NL2 is EN 10028-3 carbon-manganese plate.
Yield is in the 490 MPa class after quench and temper. Tensile is 640–840 MPa. Steel number is 1.5662. Delivery is usually quenched and tempered (QT). Charpy is specified at −196 °C when the order follows this grade. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-4, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
Do not ship 06Ni9DR steel plate against an X8Ni9 drawing and call 9Ni automatic dual name unless both books are met. Do not ship SA203 Grade E and call 3.5Ni close to 9Ni. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact temperature and delivery all fit.
Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in pressure vessel steel plates and nuclear-grade steel plates when the project file uses that path. Chinese 9Ni belongs on GB/T 713.4. 3.5Ni ASME comparisons belong on ASME SA-203.
Chemical Composition
Cast analysis follows EN 10028-4. Product analysis follows EN 10028-1 when ordered. People who search X8Ni9 chemical composition and 1.5662 chemistry want 9% nickel on the certificate, not a 12Ni14 table copied across.
Cast Analysis and Product Analysis — EN 10028-4 X8Ni9 (1.5662)

Nickel at 8.50–9.50% is the grade marker. That is 9Ni, not 5Ni and not 3.5Ni. Carbon stays very low because toughness at −196 °C is the job. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search X8Ni9 mechanical properties, X8Ni9 yield strength and X8Ni9 -196°C. Strength comes from quench and temper, not from a high-carbon melt.
Tensile and Yield — EN 10028-4 X8Ni9
| Thickness (mm) | Yield min (MPa) | Tensile (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 30 | 490 | 640 – 840 |
| 30 – 50 | 480 | 640 – 840 |
| 50 – 80 | 470 | 620 – 820 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Elongation is typically 18% min on thinner plate. Charpy for this grade is −196 °C. Energy is commonly 70 J average when the LNG file names that value, or 27 J when the order follows the base book. Location and orientation must be written. Do not assume −120 °C from X12Ni5 is enough. Do not assume −100 °C from 12Ni14 is enough.
Do not quote 490 MPa yield on a plate that was only normalized. Do not treat −196 °C as permission to stamp 06Ni9DR steel plate without checking both books.

9Ni -196°C Cryogenic Service
Buyers pick X8Ni9 when a PED / LNG file wants 9Ni plate at −196 °C. Search phrases such as X8Ni9 LNG, X8Ni9 -196°C and 1.5662 steel plate all point here.
It is not a substitute for 08Ni3DR steel plate. That grade is 3.5Ni. It is not a substitute for 07Ni5DR steel plate. That grade is 5Ni. It is not a substitute for Q400GMDR steel plate. That grade is high-Mn cryogenic plate, not 9Ni.
An ASME file should name A353 / SA-353 or A553 Type I / SA-553. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met. SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
X8Ni9 is 9Ni cryogenic vessel plate. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is an LNG tank or cryogenic vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must match 9Ni practice and keep toughness at −196 °C. A 3.5Ni procedure written for SA203 Grade D is the previous family. A 5Ni procedure written for X12Ni5 is the previous family. A carbon procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 is not valid. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is quenched and tempered EN 10028-4 X8Ni9 (QT). Double-normalize routes exist on related ASME 9Ni books. Write the route on the order. Do not assume +N from a P355NL1 file.
If the tank will see PWHT, say so. Many 9Ni tanks limit or avoid conventional carbon-steel PWHT. Impact after any simulated cycle must be named. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-4 X8Ni9; 1.5662; heat number; cast analysis including nickel; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; QT; Charpy at −196 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for X8Ni9 9Ni -196°C vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 80 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
3.5Ni plate is 12Ni14 / 08Ni3DR steel plate. 5Ni plate is X12Ni5 / 07Ni5DR steel plate. Chinese 9Ni is 06Ni9DR steel plate.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the order names another table. Class A is the usual default. If the calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED −196 °C 9Ni plate without writing them. When dual-named against 06Ni9DR or A553 Type I, write which thickness table governs.
Supplementary Requirements
Charpy details. Write −196 °C, joules, location and orientation. LNG files often want 70 J, not only 27 J.
Impact after simulated heat treatment. When the tank procedure uses a cycle.
Product analysis. Especially nickel, P, S and Al.
NDE. EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A578 as named. LNG tanks often add tighter UT.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| LNG inner tanks | EN 10028-4 X8Ni9 shells at −196 °C |
| Liquid nitrogen / ethylene cryogenic vessels | X8Ni9 courses |
| Dual-certified export | X8Ni9 / 06Ni9DR steel plate when both books fit |
| Comparison vs 3.5Ni / 5Ni | X8Ni9 next to 08Ni3DR steel plate |
X8Ni9 is the plate for a PED / LNG file that wants 9Ni at −196 °C. It is the wrong plate for a −40 °C carbon tank. That work is P355NL1. It is the wrong plate for 3.5Ni at −100 °C. That work is 12Ni14.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: 9Ni and −196 °C must both be on the certificate. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices X8Ni9 from first-line mills, reports 1.5662 chemistry including nickel, records QT, prints Charpy at −196 °C when ordered, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. X8Ni9 is not 12Ni14. X8Ni9 is not X12Ni5. X8Ni9 is not X7Ni9 unless the order names both. X8Ni9 is not Q345R steel plate. If the drawing says 3.5Ni, we will not ship 9Ni and call nickel extra.
Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.
