EN 10028-3 P460NL2 Steel Plate | P460NL2 -50°C Vessel Plate supplier
What is EN 10028-3 P460NL2 Steel ?
P460NL2 is the −50 °C quality in the P460 family of EN 10028-3. Buyers search EN 10028-3 P460NL2, P460NL2 steel plate, 1.8918, P460NL2 -50°C vessel plate and P460NL2 supplier. NL2 is colder than NL1. This page is not P460NL1. NL1 is −40 °C. This page is not P460NH. NH is elevated-temperature quality. This page is not P355NL2. That grade is a 355 MPa step. This page is not S460NL. S460NL is EN 10025-3 structural steel.
Yield is 460 MPa at ≤16 mm. Tensile is 570–720 MPa. Steel number is 1.8918. Delivery is normalized (+N). Charpy is specified at −50 °C when the order follows NL2. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-3, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
If a drawing says P460NL1, we will not ship P460NL2 and call colder automatically better without the buyer writing the name. If a drawing says −50 °C, we will not ship NL1 and call minus forty close. Dual marking with Q460DR steel plate is possible only when both books are fully met.
Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.

Nickel and copper may sit toward the top of the residual band because NL2 is a colder 460 MPa toughness grade. This is still fine-grain C-Mn plate, not 3.5Ni and not QT 690 plate. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search P460NL2 mechanical properties, P460NL2 yield strength and P460NL2 -50°C. Yield falls as thickness rises.

Elongation is typically 17–19% min on thinner plate. Charpy for NL2 is −50 °C. Energy is commonly 27 J average when the order follows the book. Location and orientation must be written. Do not assume NL1 −40 °C is enough for an NL2 drawing.
Do not quote 460 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 570–720 MPa tensile as permission to stamp Q460DR steel plate or SA537 Class 2 without checking both books.

-50°C 460 MPa Fine-Grain Service
Buyers pick P460NL2 when a PED file wants 460 MPa fine-grain plate and Charpy at −50 °C. Search phrases such as P460NL2 -50°C, P460NL2 boiler plate and 1.8918 steel plate all point here.
It is not a substitute for 09MnNiDR steel plate. That grade is −70 °C. It is not a substitute for 08Ni3DR steel plate. That grade is 3.5Ni. It is not LNG inner-tank plate. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. It is not QT 690 plate from EN 10025-6.
An ASME file should name SA-537 or SA-662 with a written −50 °C extra. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met. SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
P460NL2 is killed fine-grain C-Mn vessel plate at 570–720 MPa tensile and a colder impact temperature than NL1. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must keep toughness at −50 °C, not only at −40 °C. A procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 is not automatically valid. A procedure written for SA537 Class 2 is a comparison only. Heat input and hydrogen control matter more at this strength than on P355NL2. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized EN 10028-3 P460NL2 (+N). This is not a quench-and-temper grade unless the mill route and the order say so.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Impact after simulated PWHT should be named on a −50 °C 460 MPa file. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-3 P460NL2; 1.8918; heat number; cast analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; +N; Charpy at −50 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P460NL2 -50°C vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 8 mm – 120 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Structural 460 fine-grain plate belongs on EN 10025-3. QT high-strength plate belongs on EN 10025-6.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the order names another table. Class A is the usual default. If the calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED 460 MPa −50 °C plate without writing them. When dual-named against Q460DR steel plate, write which thickness table governs.
Supplementary Requirements
Charpy details. Write −50 °C, joules, location and orientation. Do not write “impact as per EN 10028-3” and expect the mill to guess NL2.
Impact after simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved.
Product analysis. Especially P, S, Al, N, Nb and V.
Through-thickness / Z-test. More common on 460 MPa thick plate.
NDE. EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A578 as named.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| PED high-strength low-temp vessels | EN 10028-3 P460NL2 shells at −50 °C |
| Cold-service 460 MPa drums | P460NL2 courses |
| Dual-certified export | P460NL2 / Q460DR steel plate when both books fit |
| ASME comparison jobs | P460NL2 next to SA537 Class 2 |
P460NL2 is the plate for a 460 MPa PED file at −50 °C that is not yet QT 690 and not yet 3.5Ni. It is the wrong plate for LNG inner tanks. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. It is the wrong plate for −40 °C only. That work is P460NL1.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: 460 MPa and −50 °C must both be on the certificate. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices P460NL2 from first-line mills, reports 1.8918 chemistry, records +N, prints Charpy at −50 °C when ordered, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. P460NL2 is not P460NL1. P460NL2 is not P460NH. P460NL2 is not P355NL2. P460NL2 is not Q345R steel plate. If the drawing says −40 °C, we will not ship NL2 and call colder automatically better without the buyer writing the name.
Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.
