What is ASME SA515 Grade 65 Steel?

ASME SA515 Grade 65 sits between Grade 60 and Grade 70 in the same carbon-silicon family. The drawing wants high-temperature boiler or vessel plate, not a low-temperature toughness grade. SHH STEEL supplies it as China mill-Direct Supply to ASME SA-515/SA-515M.

Minimum yield is 240 MPa (35 ksi). Tensile strength is 450–585 MPa (65–85 ksi). The steel is killed carbon-silicon plate made to coarse austenitic grain practice, which is why SA-515 exists: intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded boilers and other pressure vessels.

Do not treat ASME SA515 GR.65 as ASME SA516. SA516 is fine-grain plate for moderate- and lower-temperature work. SA515 is the high-temperature carbon-silicon route. It is also not Mn-Mo plate such as SA302, and not Cr-Mo plate such as ASME SA387.

General requirements follow ASME SA-20. For Code work the plate is used under ASME Section VIII. Dual marking ASME SA515 Grade 65 / ASTM A515 Grade 65 is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

ASME SA-515 allows a carbon–manganese trade: for each 0.01% carbon below the stated maximum, manganese may rise 0.06%, up to 1.50% on heat analysis and 1.60% on product analysis. Grade 65 carbon is higher than Grade 60 at the same thickness, so weld procedures should not be copied blindly from ASME SA515 GR.60. Grade 65 is one step above Grade 60 and one step below Grade 70. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Specimens follow ASME SA-20. If the vessel specification wants simulated PWHT, coupons from the same ASME SA515GR65 heat go through that cycle before tensile and impact testing.

ASME SA515GR65 and SA516 Gr.65 can look interchangeable on a strength table. They are not interchangeable on grain practice or intended temperature. Stay on SA-515 when the drawing is high-temperature boiler work. Move to Grade 70 if the calculation needs 260 MPa yield. Stay on Grade 60 if 220 MPa is enough and forming is tight. Carbon QT options remain ASME SA537 and ASTM A537. HSLA Steel Plates are not a Code substitute.

High-Temperature Vessel Service

ASME SA515 Grade 65 is written for intermediate- and higher-temperature welded boilers and vessels. Allowable stress comes from ASME Section II Part D for SA-515 Grade 65, not from a mill brochure.

Charpy testing is not automatic. If the datasheet sets an impact temperature, SHH STEEL puts those sets on the ASME SA515 GR.65 certificate. This plate is not a stand-in for SA203 nickel plate, and it is not a stand-in for SA516 when MDMT controls the design.

Weldability

ASME SA515GR65 is a P-No. 1 carbon vessel plate and welds with low-hydrogen procedures qualified to ASME Section IX. Carbon is higher than Grade 60, so preheat on thick, restrained joints should follow a Grade 65 WPS, not a copied Grade 60 sheet.

When Section VIII requires PWHT, the shop cycle is the carbon-steel range in UCS-56. If properties after that cycle matter, ask for simulated PWHT coupons with the mill plate. Procedure review can go through steel welding services.

Heat Treatment

ASME SA-515 does not force quench and temper. ASME SA515 Grade 65 is commonly as-rolled in thinner sizes. Plates over about 50 mm are usually normalized so the mill can meet SA-20 and any toughness or flatness notes on the order.

If the PO fixes a normalizing band or a stress-relief hold, it goes on the mill instruction and onto the certificate. Do not apply SA537 Class 2 quench-and-temper practice unless the specification itself changes.

Delivery Condition

SHH STEEL ships ASME SA515 GR.65 as-rolled or normalized, as ordered, with the condition printed on the MTC.

The certificate lists ASME SA515 Grade 65 and, when dual certified, ASTM A515 Grade 65; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; heat-treatment condition; and extra tests. Surface is vessel-plate quality—pickled or shot-blasted if requested—not 2B or BA.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness when the order says so.

Dimensional limits follow ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances. Extra-flat or restricted-thickness plate is accepted when the drawing needs it. UT to A435 or A578 is added when specified. Finished sizes go through steel cutting services.

Most ASME SA515 GR.65 orders add something beyond the base tensile table.

Simulated PWHT. Same-heat coupons follow the vessel cycle.
NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578; edge MT/PT after cutting if required.

Hardness. HBW or HV window after rolling or after simulated PWHT.
Restricted chemistry. Tighter C, P, S or CE.
HIC / NACE. Only when the datasheet cites TM0284 or MR0175 / ISO 15156.
Z-direction. A770 or Z15/Z25/Z35 for thick nozzles.
Third-party. Witness points and EN 10204 3.2.
