What is ASME SA515 Grade 60 Steel?
If a drawing says ASME SA515 Grade 60, the buyer is usually looking for a carbon-silicon vessel plate for warm-to-hot service, not a low-temperature toughness grade. SHH STEEL supplies that plate as China mill-Direct Supply to ASME SA-515/SA-515M.

ASME SA515 Grade 60 is the lowest-strength current grade in this specification. ASME SA515 Grade 65 and Grade 70 sit above it. Minimum yield is 220 MPa (32 ksi). Tensile strength is 415–550 MPa (60–80 ksi). The steel is killed carbon-silicon plate made to coarse austenitic grain practice. That coarse-grain practice is the point of SA-515: intermediate- and higher-temperature boilers and vessels, not MDMT-driven tanks.
Do not mix this page with ASME SA516. SA516 is fine-grain plate for moderate- and lower-temperature service. ASME SA515 GR.60 is the high-temperature carbon-silicon route. It is also not Mn-Mo plate such as SA302, and not Cr-Mo plate such as ASME SA387.
General requirements follow ASME SA-20. For Code work the plate is used under ASME Section VIII. Dual marking ASME SA515 Grade 60 / ASTM A515 Grade 60 is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

ASME SA-515 allows a carbon–manganese trade: for each 0.01% carbon below the stated maximum, manganese may rise 0.06%, up to 1.50% on heat analysis and 1.60% on product analysis. Grade 60 is easier to form than Grade 70 because the tensile ceiling is lower and the elongation minima are higher. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Specimens follow ASME SA-20. If the vessel specification wants simulated PWHT, coupons from the same ASME SA515GR60 heat go through that cycle before the tensile and impact tests.

People often ask whether ASME SA515GR60 can replace SA516 Gr.60. The tensile table looks similar. The grain practice and intended temperature do not. Pick SA515 when the drawing is high-temperature boiler or vessel work. Pick SA516 when notch toughness at lower temperature is the reason for the spec. If the job needs more strength in the same SA-515 family, move to Grade 65 or Grade 70 rather than stretching Grade 60. Carbon QT options stay with ASME SA537 and ASTM A537. HSLA Steel Plates are not a Code substitute.
High-Temperature Vessel Service
ASME SA515 Grade 60 is written for intermediate- and higher-temperature welded boilers and vessels. Allowable stress comes from ASME Section II Part D for SA-515 Grade 60, not from a mill brochure.
Charpy testing is not automatic on this grade. If the datasheet sets an impact temperature, SHH STEEL puts those sets on the ASME SA515 GR.60 certificate. Do not treat this plate as a substitute for SA203 nickel plate or for SA516 when MDMT is the controlling item.
Weldability
ASME SA515GR60 is a P-No. 1 carbon vessel plate and welds with low-hydrogen procedures qualified to ASME Section IX. Carbon is lower than Grade 70, so preheat is usually milder in the same thickness. Thick, restrained joints still need a written WPS.
When Section VIII requires PWHT, the shop cycle is the carbon-steel range in UCS-56. If the fabricator needs properties after that cycle, say so on the mill order so simulated PWHT coupons travel with the plate. Procedure review can go through steel welding services.
Heat Treatment
ASME SA-515 does not force quench and temper. ASME SA515 Grade 60 is commonly delivered as-rolled in thinner sizes. Plates over about 50 mm are usually normalized because that is how mills meet SA-20 and the purchaser’s toughness or flatness notes.
If the PO fixes a normalizing band or a stress-relief hold, it goes on the mill instruction and onto the certificate. Do not apply SA537 Class 2 quench-and-temper practice to Grade 60 unless the specification itself is changed.
Delivery Condition
SHH STEEL ships ASME SA515 GR.60 as-rolled or normalized, as ordered, with the condition printed on the MTC.
The certificate lists ASME SA515 Grade 60 and, when dual certified, ASTM A515 Grade 60; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; heat-treatment condition; and any extra tests. Surface is vessel-plate quality—pickled or shot-blasted if requested—not 2B or BA.
Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness when the order says so.
