DIN 17102 StE355 Steel Plate | StE355 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 StE355 (1.0562) Steel?
DIN 17102 StE355, also written StE 355, STE355, DIN17102 StE355 and StE355 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under the German standard DIN 17102. The standard covers hot-rolled flats, plates, wide flats, sections and bars with minimum yield strengths from 255 MPa to 500 MPa in the lowest thickness band. StE355 is the 355 MPa line in the StE family. StE means the basic / room-temperature quality. It is not WStE355 (elevated temperature), not TStE355 (low temperature) and not EStE355 (special low temperature). SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. Many new drawings have moved to EN 10025-3 (S355N / S355NL) or EN 10028-3 (P355N / P355NH / P355NL1). Replacement projects still name StE355 when an old German calculation, PED file or mill qualification stays on DIN. A purchase order that only says “355 fine grain” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 StE355 and the delivery condition.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. DIN 17100 is ordinary structural steel. DIN 17102 is fine-grain, killed, normally normalized. This page is not SA516 Gr.70. Grade 70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. StE355 is 355 MPa yield fine-grain plate. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

This plate sits in structural steel plates and high strength low alloy plates. Vessel comparisons belong next to pressure vessel steel plates and ASME SA516, not as automatic substitutes.
Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 StE355 / StE 355 uses the StE355 column. TStE355 tightens carbon, phosphorus and sulfur. EStE355 tightens them further. Do not ship TStE355 as StE355 without rewriting the order.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 StE355 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.20 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 – 0.50 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.90 – 1.65 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.05 |
| Vanadium (V), max | 0.10 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.12 |
Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens P and S below 0.035 / 0.030, write that on the order. Do not assume EN 10028-3 residual limits unless the order dual-names P355N.
Mechanical Properties
Yield falls as thickness rises. Tensile also steps down.
Tensile and Yield — DIN 17102 StE355 (typical published bands)

|---|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 355 | 490 – 630 (≤70 mm band) | 22 |

| 125 – 150 | 295 | 450 – 590 | confirm edition |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ | — |
Do not quote 355 MPa yield on a 80 mm plate. Do not treat 490–630 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70 or SA662 Gr.C. Those books have different yield, impact and heat-treatment rules.
Impact is the reason buyers pick a DIN 17102 family instead of DIN 17100. StE355 is the basic quality. If the drawing names −20 °C or −50 °C, the order may actually need TStE355 or EStE355, or a dual EN name such as S355NL. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the purchase order.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE355 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P355N / S355N |
| WStE355 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P355NH |
| TStE355 | Low temperature (Tief) | P355NL1 / S355NL |
| EStE355 | Special low temperature | P355NL2 |
Same 355 MPa yield idea. Different impact and, on some editions, tighter C / P / S for T and E. SHH STEEL will not ship StE355 against a TStE355 impact temperature without a written change.

Fine-Grain Structural and Vessel-Adjacent Service
DIN 17102 StE355 / StE 355 is selected for welded structures that need fine-grain toughness and 355 MPa yield: bridges, frames, tanks, machinery, offshore-related steelwork and some pressure equipment still calculated to the old German book. It is not automatically a Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA537 Cl.1 or SA533 Type B Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
StE355 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel with microalloy limits. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match 490–630 MPa tensile fine-grain practice, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 StE355 / StE 355 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement, not the default for this page.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 StE355 (and StE 355 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S355N or P355N is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for StE355 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe, or mill standard plus DIN 17102 product rules. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 StE355 / StE 355 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. If the temperature is −40 °C or −50 °C, confirm whether the grade should be TStE355 or EStE355.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
