DIN 17102 StE460 Steel Plate | StE460 Fine Grain Steel
What is DIN 17102 StE460 Steel?
DIN 17102 StE460, also written StE 460, STE460, DIN17102 StE460 and StE460 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. StE means the basic / room-temperature quality. Yield in the thin band is 460 MPa. Tensile at ≤70 mm is typically 570–720 MPa. This is the DIN 17102 line that conversion tables map to P460N (EN 10028-3) and S460N (EN 10025-3). It is not StE420 and not StE500. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “460 fine grain” or “P460N equivalent” is incomplete if the drawing still names DIN. Write DIN 17102 StE460. Do not ship StE420 against a StE460 drawing. Do not ship StE500 against a StE460 drawing without a written change.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European structural work usually names S460N / S460NL under EN 10025-3. New pressure work usually names P460N / P460NH / P460NL1. Replacement projects still name StE460 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St52-3. DIN 17100 is ordinary structural steel. DIN 17102 is fine-grain, killed, normally normalized. This page is not SA516 Gr.70. Grade 70 is ASME carbon vessel plate at 260 MPa yield. StE460 is 460 MPa yield fine-grain plate. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 StE460 / StE 460 uses a manganese and microalloy band that supports the 460 MPa yield step. Product analysis is slightly wider than heat analysis.

| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.20 | 0.22 |

StE420 uses a similar residual idea at a lower yield step. TStE460 and EStE460 tighten P and S. If the order dual-names P460N, residuals must also fit EN 10028-3 of the named edition. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it.
Mechanical Properties
Yield starts at 460 MPa at ≤16 mm and falls as thickness rises.
Tensile and Yield — DIN 17102 StE460 (typical published bands)
| Thickness (mm) | Yield ReH min (MPa) | Tensile Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤16 | 460 | 570 – 720 (≤70 mm band) |
| 16 – 35 | 450 | 570 – 720 |
| 35 – 50 | 440 | 570 – 720 |
| 50 – 70 | 430 | 570 – 720 |
| 70 – 100 | 420 | 560 – 710 |
| 100 – 150 | 410 | 550 – 700 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Do not quote 460 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 570–720 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.70, SA737 Gr.C or SA738 Gr.B.
Impact is the reason buyers pick DIN 17102 instead of DIN 17100. StE460 is the basic quality. If the drawing names −20 °C or −50 °C, the order may actually need TStE460 or EStE460, or a dual EN name such as S460NL / P460NL1. Write the test temperature on the purchase order.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 460
| Grade | Quality idea | Typical modern comparison |
|---|---|---|
| StE460 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | P460N / S460N |
| WStE460 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | P460NH |
| TStE460 | Low temperature (Tief) | P460NL1 / S460NL |
| EStE460 | Special low temperature | P460NL2 |
Same 460 MPa yield idea. Different impact and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship StE460 against a TStE460 impact temperature without a written change.

Fine-Grain Structural and Vessel-Adjacent Service
DIN 17102 StE460 / StE 460 is selected for welded structures that need fine-grain toughness at the 460 MPa yield step: frames, tanks, machinery and some pressure equipment still calculated to the old German book. It is the practical DIN counterpart to P460N / S460N. It is not automatically a Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.70, SA537 Cl.1 or SA738 Gr.A.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
StE460 is killed fine-grain C-Mn-microalloy steel at a higher strength step than StE420. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 570–720 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 StE460 / StE 460 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.B or SA737 Gr.C. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 StE460 (and StE 460 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to S460N or P460N is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit the named EN edition.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for StE460 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 StE460 / StE 460 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. If the temperature is −40 °C or −50 °C, confirm whether the grade should be TStE460 or EStE460.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, not only ladle chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
