DIN 17102 StE255 Steel Plate | StE255 Fine Grain Steel supplier
What is DIN 17102 StE255 (1.0461) Steel?
DIN 17102 StE255, also written StE 255, STE255, DIN17102 StE255 and StE255 steel plate, is a weldable normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102. The standard covers hot-rolled flats, plates, wide flats, sections and bars with minimum yield strengths from 255 MPa to 500 MPa in the lowest thickness band. StE255 is the lowest strength line in that book. StE means the basic / room-temperature quality. It is not WStE255, not TStE255 and not EStE255. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) for this grade. Plate is produced to DIN 17102 and shipped to buyers in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
A purchase order that only says “255 fine grain” or “StE255 equivalent to S275” is incomplete. Write DIN 17102 StE255. Do not treat StE255 as StE285. StE285 is the next strength step and is the grade usually compared with P275N. StE255 sits below that step.
DIN 17102 is a legacy specification. New European work usually names S275N / S275NL under EN 10025-3 or P275N / P275NH / P275NL1 under EN 10028-3. Those modern names line up more cleanly with StE285, not StE255. Replacement projects still name StE255 when an old German calculation or mill qualification stays on DIN.
This page is not DIN 17100 St37-2. DIN 17100 is ordinary structural steel. DIN 17102 is fine-grain, killed, normally normalized. This page is not SA516 Gr.60 and not SA516 Gr.70. It is not ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not QT alloy under ASME SA387 or ASME SA543.
Company scope: global steel mill sourcing partner – SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition
DIN 17102 StE255 / StE 255 uses a lower manganese band than the 355 family.
Heat Analysis — DIN 17102 StE255 (typical cast / ladle limits)
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.18 |
| Silicon (Si), max | 0.40 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 – 1.30 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.020 |
| Aluminium (Al), min (total, when used for grain) | 0.020 |
| Chromium (Cr), max | 0.30 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.20 |
| Molybdenum (Mo), max | 0.08 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 |
| Niobium (Nb), max | 0.03 |
| Nb + Ti + V, max | 0.05 |
StE355 manganese is 0.90–1.65 and vanadium is listed. StE255 manganese starts at 0.50 and the microalloy cap is lower. Do not ship a 355 heat as StE255 because a coupon came in low. TStE255 and EStE255 tighten P and S. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when the order names it. If a Houston, Rotterdam or Jebel Ali specification tightens P and S, write that on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Yield starts at 255 MPa in the lowest thickness band and falls as thickness rises. Tensile is lower than the 355 family.
Tensile and Yield — DIN 17102 StE255 (typical published idea)
| Property | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Yield ReH, lowest thickness band | 255 MPa min |
| Tensile Rm, thinner product | 360 – 480 MPa |
| Elongation | confirm edition / thickness |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Yield and tensile both step down with thickness, the same way StE355 does at a higher level. Confirm the ordered thickness against the named edition of DIN 17102. Do not quote 255 MPa yield on a thick plate without reading the thickness column. Do not treat 360–480 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA516 Gr.55, SA285 Gr.A or SA662 Gr.A.
Impact is the reason buyers pick DIN 17102 instead of DIN 17100. StE255 is the basic quality. If the drawing names −20 °C or −50 °C, the order may actually need TStE255 or EStE255. Write the test temperature, orientation and energy on the purchase order.
How StE / WStE / TStE / EStE Differ at 255
| Grade | Quality idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| StE255 | Basic / room-temperature fine grain | This page |
| WStE255 | Elevated temperature (Warm) | Same yield idea, warm service |
| TStE255 | Low temperature (Tief) | Same yield idea, colder impact |
| EStE255 | Special low temperature | Tightest C / P / S in the 255 family |
Same 255 MPa yield idea. Different impact and, on T/E, tighter residuals. SHH STEEL will not ship StE255 against a TStE255 impact temperature without a written change.

SA203 Gr.A, SA299 Gr.A and SA737 Gr.B are vessel or HSLA plates. None of them is StE255.
Fine-Grain Structural Service at 255 MPa
DIN 17102 StE255 / StE 255 is selected when the drawing wants fine-grain, weldable, normalized plate at the lowest DIN 17102 yield step: lighter welded structures, tanks, machinery frames and other work still calculated to the old German book. It is not a high-strength substitute for StE355. It is not automatically a Section VIII plate. If the vessel is ASME, the drawing should name an ASME or ASTM grade such as SA516 Gr.60, SA285 Gr.B or SA537 Cl.1.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is not nickel low-temp plate like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. It is not QT Ni-Cr-Mo like SA543 Type B Cl.1. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. Stainless inquiries belong on ASME SA240 or ASTM A240.
Weldability
StE255 is killed fine-grain C-Mn steel at the lowest strength step in this book. Welding is production welding, and Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify procedures to the applicable code. For ASME work that happens to use a dual-named plate, use ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the 360–480 MPa tensile band, not a SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2 Cr-Mo procedure and not a QT procedure from SA517 Gr.F. Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized DIN 17102 StE255 / StE 255 plate. Fine-grain practice and normalize are the product idea. As-rolled shipment is a special agreement, not the default for this page.
If the vessel or structure will see PWHT, test coupons shall follow a simulated cycle when the order names it. This is not the QT route used on SA738 Gr.A or SA737 Gr.B. Special heat treatment, extra simulation or third-party hold points add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists DIN 17102 StE255 (and StE 255 if requested); heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results to the correct thickness column; normalize statement; impact when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual marking to an EN name is available only when chemistry, tensile and impact all fit that EN edition. Do not assume S275N / P275N dual marking; those names sit closer to StE285.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for StE255 fine grain steel:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm. Confirm any request above 150 mm against mill capability
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
- Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes inside those limits
Ship plate inquiries belong on shipbuilding steel plates or BV Rules. Weathering plate belongs on EN 10025-5 or Corten A/B. TMCP fine-grain structural belongs on EN 10025-4. QT structural belongs on EN 10025-6. Ordinary structural belongs on EN 10025-2 or JIS G3106.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow the mill rolling standard named on the order, commonly EN 10029 for plate when the buyer is in Europe. Do not apply ASTM A36/A36M structural tolerances to a DIN fine-grain plate without writing them. UT to EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A577 / A578 is added when the order names it.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export DIN 17102 StE255 / StE 255 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation. If the temperature is −40 °C or −50 °C, confirm whether the grade should be TStE255 or EStE255.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. UT per the named method.
Z-direction / through-thickness testing. When the drawing names Z15 / Z25 / Z35.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2, with inspectors arranged for US, European or Middle East documentation packages.
