What is ASME SA225 Grade C Steel?

ASME SA225 Grade C is the high-strength grade in ASME SA-225/SA-225M. The specification covers manganese-vanadium-nickel alloy steel plates for fusion-welded pressure vessels in moderate and lower-temperature service. Grade C is the grade buyers actually type into Google. As Direct Mill Supply by SHH STEEL, the plate is produced to ASME SA-225/SA-225M.

The same plate is written SA225 Gr.C, SA225GRC, SA225 GR C, SA-225 Grade C, SA225 Grade C, ASME SA225 GR.C, ASME SA225GRC, ASTM A225 Grade C, A225 Gr.C, A225GRC and A/SA225 Grade C. They all mean Grade C. ASTM A225/A225M is the product companion.

This is not carbon vessel plate. If the drawing says SA285 Gr.C or SA516 Gr.70, open that page instead. SA285 is low-to-intermediate tensile carbon. SA516 is fine-grain carbon. ASME SA225 Grade C is a Mn-V-Ni alloy with a 485 MPa yield line and a 725–930 MPa tensile window. That is closer in strength class to quenched-and-tempered families than to ordinary boiler carbon, but the heat-treatment route is not the same as SA517 Gr.Q. SA517 is QT. SA225 Grade C is normally delivered normalized.

It is also not a nickel cryogenic grade like SA203 Gr.D or SA203 Gr.E. Those plates live on nickel content and low-temperature Charpy. SA225 Grade C lives on manganese, vanadium and a modest nickel band. Do not recertify one as the other.

The steel follows ASME SA-20 general requirements. Fine austenitic grain practice and killed steel are the normal mill route for Grade C. Heat treatment is thermal treatment to produce the specified properties, in practice normalizing. As-rolled plate is not SA225 Gr.C.

For Code work the plate is used under ASME Section VIII. Dual marking ASME SA225 Grade C / ASTM A225 Grade C is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

When a project is still choosing alloy vessel plate, a China mill Agent path through SHH STEEL puts SA225GRC next to SA302 Gr.B, SA302 Gr.C, SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2 and SA537 Cl.1. That comparison is the point: Mn-Mo, Cr-Mo, carbon QT and Mn-V-Ni are four different purchases.

This plate is a vessel product. It is not structural ASTM A36 steel plate. It is not silicon-killed high-temp carbon like SA515 Gr.70.

Chemical Composition

Chemistry for ASME SA225 Grade C is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASME SA-225/SA-225M. Vanadium and nickel together with a high manganese band are the grade markers.

Heat Analysis — ASME SA225 Grade C / SA225 Gr.C

Manganese (Mn)1.15 – 1.50
Phosphorus (P), max0.035

Nickel (Ni)0.37 – 0.73
Vanadium (V)0.10 – 0.22
P, SPer SA-20 / order

Compare that table with nearby alloys before anyone tries a silent swap. SA203 Gr.A and SA203 Gr.B live on nickel, not vanadium. SA302 Gr.A and SA302 Gr.D live on molybdenum. SA387 Gr.11 Cl.2 lives on chromium-molybdenum. Grade C in SA-225 is none of those ladles.

A Grade A heat in SA-225 cannot be recertified as Grade C. Carbon, vanadium and the tensile table are different. If the drawing says ASME SA225 Grade C or ASME SA225GRC, the ladle must sit in the Grade C table. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and adds product analysis when ASME SA-20 or the vessel specification requires it.

Tighter phosphorus, sulfur or residuals are supplementary. Vacuum treatment and other A20 chemistry items are available when written on the order.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Requirements — ASME SA225 Grade C per ASME SA-225/SA-225M

PropertyRequirement
Tensile strength725 – 930 MPa (105 – 135 ksi)
Yield strength, min485 MPa (70 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min20%

That strength window is why Grade C exists. Grade A in the same specification sits much lower, around the 485–620 MPa tensile class. Grade C is a 70 ksi yield alloy vessel plate. Do not read “SA225” and assume Grade A numbers.

Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness is not a default line in SA-225. A special HBW window is supplementary.

Charpy impact is not a hidden default at −46 °C or −50 °C. If the vessel needs a stated test temperature and energy, that is a supplementary requirement under ASME SA-20. Write the temperature on the purchase order. Moderate and lower-temperature service is the intended use; it is not automatic cryogenic qualification.

Specimens follow ASME SA-20. If simulated PWHT is specified, coupons from the same SA225 Gr.C heat follow the vessel cycle before tensile and impact testing. On a 485 MPa yield alloy that request should be on the mill order whenever the shop will PWHT the vessel.

Compare strength class carefully. SA537 Cl.2 is carbon QT at a lower yield band than Grade C. SA517 Gr.F is QT 690 MPa class with a 65 mm ceiling. SA225 Grade C is not a substitute for either.

Moderate and Lower Temperature Vessel Service

ASME SA225 Grade C is selected when a Section VIII vessel needs more yield than carbon boiler plate and does not need the nickel of SA203 or the chromium of SA387. Vanadium refines grain and lifts yield. Nickel at 0.40–0.70% helps toughness. Manganese carries the hardenability for the normalized condition.

Allowable stress for Code work comes from ASME Section II Part D for SA-225 Grade C, not from a mill flyer. Impact temperature is an order number.

Typical use is high-pressure process drums, reactor shells that are specified to SA-225, and other fusion-welded equipment written as Mn-V-Ni vessel plate. It is not a replacement for SA387 Gr.91 Cl.2 creep service and not a replacement for SA203 Gr.A nickel low-temp service.

Weldability

SA225GRC is a vanadium-bearing alloy vessel plate. Welding is not the same job as welding SA516 Gr.60 or SA285 Gr.B.

Procedures for Code work are qualified to ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the required joint strength and toughness. Low-hydrogen practice is mandatory thinking. Vanadium and the 0.25% carbon cap raise hardenability enough that a cold, restrained start can crack.

Preheat depends on thickness, restraint, hydrogen and the qualified WPS. After welding, many shops want to PWHT. On 485 MPa yield alloy plate that decision has to be engineered. Simulated PWHT of mill coupons should be on the purchase order whenever the vessel specification includes PWHT.

Do not copy a SA387 Gr.22 Cl.1 Cr-Mo procedure or a SA517 Gr.A QT procedure onto ASME SA225 Grade C without review. The fabricator owns the qualified WPS.

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment of ASME SA225 Grade C is thermal treatment to produce the specified mechanical properties. In mill practice that means normalizing.

As-rolled plate is not SA225 Grade C. Quench-and-temper practice used for SA517 Gr.E or SA517 Gr.H is also not this grade.

Holding time follows mill practice and ASME SA-20 thickness rules. If the purchaser fixes a normalizing temperature band or a subsequent temper because later PWHT is planned, those limits go on the mill instruction and onto the certificate.

SHH STEEL reports the actual heat-treatment condition on the MTC for every SA225 Gr.C plate.

Delivery Condition

Usual delivery is normalized alloy vessel plate. Additional tempering is supplied when specified.

The certificate lists ASME SA225 Grade C and, when dual certified, ASTM A225 Grade C; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; heat-treatment temperatures; Charpy results when ordered; and supplementary tests.

Surface is vessel-plate quality. Shot blasting and shop primer are available.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for SA225 Gr.C Mn-V-Ni vessel plate:

  • Thickness: 8 mm – 100 mm (heavier sizes by mill enquiry)
  • Width: up to about 4000 mm
  • Length: up to about 12000 mm

Cut-to-length shells and nest sizes are available. State thickness clearly on the RFQ so tensile and heat-treatment soak are planned against the actual plate.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances.

Ultrasonic testing to A435 or A578 is commonly added on Grade C because strength and restraint are high. Extra-flatness is a negotiated item.

Supplementary Requirements

Most export ASME SA225 Grade C orders add tests beyond the base tensile table. SHH STEEL does not assume these extras.

Simulated PWHT. Same-heat coupons follow the vessel cycle. Tensile and Charpy are run after that cycle. On 485 MPa yield alloy this is the test that prevents a shop surprise.

Charpy details. Temperature, energy, specimen orientation and location as agreed. Not a hidden default.

NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578; edge MT/PT after cutting.

Hardness survey. Surface or through-thickness HBW/HV after normalize or after simulated PWHT.

Restricted chemistry. Tighter P, S, residuals or vacuum treatment per SA-20.

HIC / NACE. Only when TM0284 or MR0175 / ISO 15156 is cited. Grade C is not automatically sour-service plate.

Z-direction. A770 or Z15/Z25/Z35 for nozzles and strained joints.

Third-party. Witness of normalizing, testing and documents. Output can be EN 10204 3.2.

If an item is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed.

Why Choose SHH STEEL

SHH STEEL works as a China Mill Direct Exporter for plates to ASME SA-225/SA-225M. On ASME SA225 Grade C that means mill pricing, dual SA225/A225 marking, heat and product analysis including the 0.11–0.20% vanadium band, recorded normalizing, 3.1 as standard and 3.2 when specified, and the extra tests a 485 MPa vessel shop actually writes on the PO.

We also keep the order on the right specification. Grade C is not Grade A. SA225 is not SA285 Gr.A. SA225 is not SA516 Gr.55. SA225 Gr.C is not SA517 Gr.Q. If the drawing is nickel low-temp, we point the inquiry to SA203. If the drawing is Cr-Mo elevated-temp, we point it to SA387. If the drawing is QT 690, we point it to SA517.

FAQ

What names are used for ASME SA225 Grade C?
Buyers write SA225 Gr.C, SA225GRC, SA225 GR C, SA-225 Grade C, ASME SA225 GR.C, ASME SA225GRC, ASTM A225 Grade C and A225GRC. They all mean Grade C in ASME SA-225/SA-225M. SHH STEEL prints the wording on the purchase order.
Is ASME SA225 Grade C the same as ASTM A225 Grade C?
Chemistry and tensile limits match. ASME SA-225 is the Code version used with ASME Section VIII. ASTM A225 is the product spec. As China mill-Direct Supply, SHH STEEL dual-certifies SA225 Gr.C / A225 Gr.C when the vessel must be stamped.
What is the yield strength of SA225 Gr.C?
485 MPa (70 ksi) minimum. Tensile is 725–930 MPa (105–135 ksi). Elongation is 20% in 50 mm, per ASME SA-225.
Why specify Grade C instead of Grade A?
Grade C is the high-strength grade in SA-225. Grade A sits in a lower tensile class. Vanadium and carbon bands also differ. Follow the grade on the drawing.
Is SA225GRC the same as SA516 Gr.70, SA203 or SA517?
No. SA516 is fine-grain carbon. SA203 is nickel low-temperature plate. SA517 is quenched-and-tempered high-strength alloy. ASME SA225 Grade C is normalized Mn-V-Ni vessel plate.
What heat treatment does ASME SA225 Grade C require?
Thermal treatment to produce the specified properties, in practice normalizing. As-rolled delivery is not this grade.
Can welding of SA225 Gr.C be qualified to ASME Section IX?
Yes. It is a fusion-welded vessel plate. Use a low-hydrogen WPS written for this vanadium-bearing alloy. The fabricator owns the procedure.
Can SHH STEEL issue EN 10204 3.2 on ASME SA225 Grade C?
Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 or another third-party witness is arranged when it is written on the order.
What is the density of SA225 Gr.C plate?
7.85 g/cm³. SHH STEEL uses this value for shipping-weight estimates on ASME SA-225 plate.
