What is ASTM A203 Grade A /A203 Gr.A Steel?

As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and pressure-vessel plate exporter, SHH STEEL supplies ASTM A203 Grade A Steel Plate.

This grade is searched and specified under many equivalent writings. In inquiries, drawings and AI searches you will see ASTM A203 Grade A, ASTM A203 Gr.A, ASTM A203 Gr A, A203GRA, A203 GR A, A203 Grade A steel plate, ASME SA203 Grade A, SA203 Gr.A, SA203GRA, SA-203 Grade A, 2.25 nickel steel plate and A203 nickel pressure vessel plate. All of these names refer to the same 2.25% nickel alloy plate under ASTM A203/A203M (ASME SA-203/SA-203M).

ASTM A203 Grade A is intended primarily for welded pressure vessels in moderate- and low-temperature service. Nickel in the 2.10–2.50% (heat analysis) range improves notch toughness compared with plain carbon vessel steels such as ASTM A516 or ASME SA516. Minimum yield is 255 MPa (37 ksi) and tensile strength is 450–585 MPa (65–85 ksi). Plates of Grades A, B, D and E are normally delivered normalized.

SHH STEEL supplies A203 Gr.A as true China mill-Direct Supply, working directly with Chinese mills that roll pressure-vessel nickel steel. Dual certification to ASTM A203 Grade A and ASME SA203 Grade A is available when the project falls under ASME Section VIII.

Buyers comparing vessel grades also look at ASTM A537, ASME SA537, ASTM A285 and ASME SA515. SHH STEEL helps confirm whether 2.25% Ni A203 Gr.A is required, or whether a 3.5% Ni grade (D/E/F) or a carbon vessel plate is the correct choice.

This product belongs to the Pressure Vessel Steel Plates family. It is a nickel-alloy vessel plate, not a decorative stainless plate and not a structural Carbon Steel Plates grade.

Chemical Composition

ASTM A203 Grade A chemistry must be reported as heat analysis (ladle analysis) and, when specified, product analysis. Limits below follow ASTM A203/A203M for Grade A.

Heat Analysis (Ladle Analysis) — Grade A

ElementThickness / BasisHeat Analysis (%)
Carbon (C), max≤ 50 mm (2 in.)0.17
Carbon (C), max> 50 mm to 100 mm (2–4 in.)0.20

Manganese (Mn), max≤ 50 mm0.78
Manganese (Mn), max> 50 mm0.88
Silicon (Si)All0.13 – 0.45
Nickel (Ni)All2.03 – 2.57
P, S, CSame max principles as heat; product check per A20/A203Per order

Nickel is the defining alloy. Heat analysis 2.10–2.50% Ni (product 2.03–2.57%) is what separates A203 Gr.A / A203GRA from carbon vessel steels. Steel shall be killed and shall meet fine-grain practice under ASTM A20. SHH STEEL reports both heat and product analysis on the mill certificate when product analysis is ordered.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Requirements — ASTM A203 Grade A (A203 Gr.A)

PropertyRequirement
Tensile strength450 – 585 MPa (65 – 85 ksi)
Yield strength, min (0.2%)255 MPa (37 ksi)
Elongation in 200 mm (8 in.), min19%
Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min23%

These values apply to both thin and thick plates of Grade A (unlike Grade F, which changes with thickness). Hardness is typically around 160 HB. Density is 7.85 g/cm³, the usual value for weight calculation on vessel shells.

SHH STEEL supplies A203 Gr.A with tensile results on every heat. Impact testing is agreed by temperature and orientation when the purchaser specifies Charpy requirements, or when an optional faster-cool + temper route is used.

Material Comparison

A203 has two nickel levels and four strength levels. Grade A is the 2.25% Ni, lower-strength entry grade.

GradeNominal NiYield minTensileHeat treatmentTypical choice
A203 Gr.A2.25%255 MPa450–585 MPaNormalizedStandard 2.25Ni vessel plate
A203 Gr.B2.25%275 MPa485–620 MPaNormalizedSame Ni, higher strength
A203 Gr.D3.50%255 MPa450–585 MPaNormalizedColder service, same strength as A
A203 Gr.E3.50%275 MPa485–620 MPaNormalized3.5Ni + higher strength
A203 Gr.F3.50%380 / 345 MPa550–690 / 515–655Quench + temperHighest strength 3.5Ni

Choose A203 Gr.A when the drawing says Grade A / A203GRA / SA203 Gr.A and 255 MPa yield is enough. If the same 2.25% Ni chemistry is wanted at 275 MPa yield, use Grade B. If lower temperature toughness is the driver, compare Grade D or E (3.5% Ni). For higher-strength carbon or HSLA vessel options, see ASTM A537, ASME SA537 and HSLA Steel Plates. Chrome-moly elevated-temperature vessels use ASME SA387, not A203.

Low-Temperature Toughness

Nickel is added to A203 Gr.A to improve notch toughness for welded pressure vessels in moderate- and low-temperature service. It is not a cryogenic 9% Ni steel, but it is tougher than ordinary carbon vessel plate of similar strength.

When plates of Grades A, B, D and E are given a cooling rate faster than air cooling and then tempered at not less than 595°C, ASTM A203 requires Charpy V-notch testing with a minimum average of 27 J (20 ft·lbf). Test temperature and specimen orientation are by agreement.

SHH STEEL can supply A203 Grade A with agreed impact temperature for LNG-related utilities, refrigerated storage, northern pipelines and low-temperature process drums. Always confirm the MDMT on the vessel drawing before locking Grade A versus Grade D/E.

Weldability

ASTM A203 Grade A is designed as a welded pressure-vessel plate. Normalized 2.25% Ni steel has good weldability with low-hydrogen procedures.

Typical practice uses matching nickel-bearing or C-Mn low-hydrogen consumables qualified to ASME Section IX. Preheat depends on thickness and restraint. PWHT, when required by the vessel code, is commonly in the 595–650°C range, consistent with the tempering floor in A203. Bend tests per the applicable vessel procedure confirm ductility of the joint.

Compared with quenched-and-tempered Grade F, Grade A is easier to fabricate on site. SHH STEEL recommends qualified WPS/PQR for every thickness break.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

All ASTM A203 Grade A plates shall be normalized, except where the purchaser approves a faster cool plus temper at not less than 595°C for toughness.

Grade F is the only A203 grade that must be austenitized, water quenched and tempered. Do not apply Grade F heat treatment to Grade A unless the order is changed to Grade F.

SHH STEEL delivers A203 Gr.A in the normalized condition as standard. Mill certificates state heat treatment, heat analysis, product analysis (if ordered), tensile results and any agreed Charpy values.

Pressure-vessel plates are supplied as-rolled and heat-treated, then pickled or shot-blasted as agreed. Decorative finishes such as 2B, BA or No.4 are not used on A203 Gr.A. Surface condition is industrial plate quality suitable for welding, NDE and coating.

Tolerances and Dimensions

Dimensional tolerances follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20 practices for pressure-vessel plates.

Typical supply range from SHH STEEL:

  • Thickness: 6 mm – 150 mm (heavier by mill enquiry)
  • Width: up to about 4600 mm
  • Length: up to about 12000 mm

Flatness, camber and thickness tolerance are those of vessel plate, not strip. Ultrasonic testing to ASTM A435 / A578 can be added when the vessel specification requires lamination checks. SHH STEEL also arranges steel cutting services to shell and head nest sizes.
