ASTM A515 Grade 70 is the grade most buyers actually type when they need carbon-silicon plate for warm-to-hot boilers and vessels. SHH STEEL supplies it as China mill-Direct Supply to ASTM A515/A515M.

The same plate is written A515 Gr.70, A515GR70, A515 Grade 70, A515Gr70, A515Gr70N, ASME SA515 Grade 70, SA515 Gr.70, SA515GR70 and SA-515 Grade 70. A515Gr70N is not a separate ASTM grade. The “N” is mill shorthand for normalized delivery, which is how most thick A515 Grade 70 plate is sold. ASTM A515/A515M is the product specification. ASME SA-515/SA-515M is the Code companion.

Grade 70 is the highest-strength current grade in this specification. Minimum yield is 260 MPa (38 ksi). Tensile strength is 485–620 MPa (70–90 ksi). The steel is killed carbon-silicon plate made to coarse austenitic grain practice. That is the job of A515: intermediate- and higher-temperature service, not MDMT-driven tanks.

Do not treat A515Gr70N as ASTM A516 or ASME SA516. A516 is fine-grain plate for moderate- and lower-temperature work. A515 is the high-temperature carbon-silicon route. It is also not Mn-Mo plate such as A302, and not Cr-Mo plate such as ASME SA387.

General requirements follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20. For Code work the plate is dual-certified to ASME SA515 Grade 70 and used under ASME Section VIII. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

This plate belongs to the Pressure Vessel Steel Plates family. It is not a structural Carbon Steel Plates grade.

Chemistry for ASTM A515 Grade 70 is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASTM A515/A515M.

ASTM A515 allows a carbon–manganese trade: for each 0.01% carbon below the stated maximum, manganese may rise 0.06%, up to 1.50% on heat analysis and 1.60% on product analysis. Grade 70 carbon and manganese are higher than Grade 60 and Grade 65, so a Grade 60 WPS should not be reused without review. SHH STEEL reports ladle analysis on every certificate and adds product analysis when the PO asks for it.

Tensile Requirements — ASTM A515 Grade 70 per ASTM A515/A515M

This is why A515Gr70N dominates inquiries: it is the strongest current A515 grade. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Specimens follow ASTM A20. If the vessel specification wants simulated PWHT, coupons from the same ASTM A515 Grade 70 heat go through that cycle before tensile and impact testing.

A515GR70 and A516 Gr.70 look the same on a strength table. They do not share grain practice or intended temperature. Stay on ASTM A515 Grade 70 when the drawing is high-temperature boiler work. Use A516 when notch toughness at lower temperature is the reason for the spec. Carbon QT options remain ASTM A537 and ASME SA537. HSLA Steel Plates are not a Code substitute.

ASTM A515 Grade 70 is written for intermediate- and higher-temperature welded boilers and vessels. When dual certified to ASME SA515 Grade 70, allowable stress comes from ASME Section II Part D, not from a mill brochure.

Charpy testing is not automatic on A515 Grade 70. If the datasheet sets an impact temperature, SHH STEEL puts those sets on the A515Gr70N certificate. This plate is not a stand-in for A203 nickel plate, and it is not a stand-in for A516 when MDMT controls the design.

A515GR70 is a P-No. 1 carbon vessel plate and welds with low-hydrogen procedures. For Code work, procedures are qualified to ASME Section IX. Carbon is the highest in the A515 family, so thick, restrained joints need a Grade 70 WPS, not a copied Grade 60 sheet.

When Section VIII requires PWHT, the shop cycle is the carbon-steel range in UCS-56. If properties after that cycle matter, ask for simulated PWHT coupons with the mill plate. Procedure review can go through steel welding services.

ASTM A515 does not force quench and temper. Thin ASTM A515 Grade 70 is often as-rolled. Plates over about 50 mm are usually normalized, which is why buyers search A515Gr70N.

If the PO says “N” or “normalized,” that condition is written on the mill instruction and on the certificate. Do not apply A537 Class 2 quench-and-temper practice unless the specification itself changes.

The certificate lists ASTM A515 Grade 70 and, when dual certified, ASME SA515 Grade 70; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; heat-treatment condition; and extra tests. Surface is vessel-plate quality—pickled or shot-blasted if requested—not 2B or BA.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness when the order says so.

Usual supply range for ASTM A515 Grade 70 / A515Gr70N high temp vessel plate:

• Thickness: 6 mm – 150 mm (heavier by enquiry)
• Width: up to about 4600 mm
• Length: up to about 12000 mm

State thickness and whether the plate is A515Gr70N (normalized) on the PO. Shell and head nest cutting is available.

Dimensional limits follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances. Extra-flat or restricted-thickness plate is accepted when the drawing needs it. UT to A435 or A578 is added when specified. Finished sizes go through steel cutting services.

Most ASTM A515 Grade 70 orders add something beyond the base tensile table.

Simulated PWHT. Same-heat coupons follow the vessel cycle.
NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578; edge MT/PT after cutting if required.
Impact. Temperature, orientation and energy as written on the RFQ.
Hardness. HBW or HV window after rolling or after simulated PWHT.
Restricted chemistry. Tighter C, P, S or CE.
HIC / NACE. Only when the datasheet cites TM0284 or MR0175 / ISO 15156.
Z-direction. A770 or Z15/Z25/Z35 for thick nozzles.
Third-party. Witness points and EN 10204 3.2.

These tests run through steel testing service. If it is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed.
