ASME SA517 Grade B Steel Plate | SA517 Gr.B QT High Strength Vessel Plate
What is ASME SA517 Grade B Steel?
ASME SA517 Grade B is the thin-gauge grade in the SA-517 family. The tensile table is the same 690 MPa class as Grade F and Grade Q, but the specification stops at 32 mm (1.25 in.). If the course is 40 mm, Grade B is already outside the standard. As a China mill Agent, SHH STEEL supplies this plate to ASME SA-517/SA-517M.
The same plate is written SA517 Gr.B, SA517GRB, SA517 GR B, SA-517 Grade B, SA517 Grade B, ASTM A517 Grade B, A517 Gr.B, A517GRB and A/SA517 Grade B. They all mean Grade B in ASME SA-517. The ASTM companion is A517/A517M.
ASME SA-517 lists eight grades—A, B, E, F, H, P, Q and S. They share one mechanical table where thickness overlaps. They do not share alloy content or maximum thickness. Grade B and Grade A are the 32 mm pair. Grade B is a Cr-Mo-B-Ti alloy without a specified nickel band. That is why it is often the lower-alloy choice when the drawing allows Grade B and the plate is thin.
The steel is killed and made to fine austenitic grain practice under ASME SA-20. Heat treatment is mandatory quench and temper: austenitize at not less than 900 °C, quench in water or oil, temper at not less than 620 °C. As-rolled or normalize-only plate is not SA517 Gr.B.
Do not mix this page with ASME SA515 or ASME SA516. Those are carbon vessel plates. ASME SA517 Grade B is a QT alloy plate. It is also not structural A514. A514 is a structural specification. SA-517 is a pressure-vessel specification with SA-20 general requirements and Code testing.
For Code work the plate is used under ASME Section VIII. Dual marking ASME SA517 Grade B / ASTM A517 Grade B is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
When a project is still choosing high-strength vessel plate, Direct Mill Supply by SHH STEEL puts SA517GRB next to ASME SA537 Class 2, ASTM A537, ASME SA387 and ASTM A285, so the buyer can see whether they actually need 690 MPa QT or a lower-strength carbon / Cr-Mo route.

Chemical Composition
Chemistry for ASME SA517 Grade B is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASME SA-517/SA-517M. Grade B is a Cr-Mo-B-Ti alloy. Nickel is not specified. That is the commercial difference versus Grade F.

A Grade F heat cannot be recertified as Grade B. Nickel is specified on Grade F and not on Grade B. Thickness limits are also different. If the drawing says ASME SA517 Grade B, the ladle must sit in the Grade B table. As a China mill Distributor, SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and adds product analysis when ASME SA-20 or the vessel specification requires it.
Tighter phosphorus, sulfur or residuals are supplementary. Vacuum carbon deoxidation and other A20 chemistry items are available when written on the order.
Mechanical Properties
Where Grade B is permitted (32 mm and under), it uses the high line of the SA-517 tensile table.
Tensile Requirements — ASME SA517 Grade B per ASME SA-517/SA-517M
| Property | ≤ 32 mm (1.25 in.), within Grade B limit |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 795 – 930 MPa (115 – 135 ksi) |
| Yield strength, min | 690 MPa (100 ksi) |
| Elongation in 50 mm, min | 16% |
| Reduction of area, rectangular, min | 35% |
| Reduction of area, round, min | 45% |
There is no 65 mm or 150 mm line on Grade B. The specification itself ends at 32 mm. A 40 mm inquiry is not Grade B, even if someone wants the same 690 MPa numbers.
Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness after QT is typically in a high-strength vessel range; a special HBW window is a supplementary requirement.
ASME SA-517 requires transverse Charpy V-notch testing with a minimum lateral expansion of 0.38 mm (0.015 in.) on each specimen. The test temperature is agreed between purchaser and manufacturer. Do not assume −18 °C unless the purchase order says so.
Specimens follow ASME SA-20. If simulated PWHT is specified, coupons from the same SA517 Gr.B heat follow the vessel cycle before tensile and impact testing. On QT 690 MPa plate that request should be on the mill order whenever the shop will PWHT the vessel.
Material Comparison
| Grade | Alloy emphasis | Max thickness | Same strength table where allowed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SA517 Gr.A | Cr-Mo family | 32 mm | Yes |
| SA517 Gr.B | Cr-Mo-B-Ti, no specified Ni | 32 mm | Yes |
| SA517 Gr.F | Ni-Cr-Mo-B | 65 mm | Yes |
| SA517 Gr.Q | Ni-Cr-Mo-V | 150 mm | Yes |
| SA517 Gr.E | High Cr-Mo | 150 mm | Yes |
| SA537 Cl.2 | Carbon QT | By class | Lower strength |
| A514 | Structural QT | Structural spec | Not a vessel spec |
Order ASME SA517 Grade B when the drawing names Grade B and thickness is 32 mm or less. If thickness exceeds 32 mm, Grade B is not available under SA-517. Grade F is the next common step to 65 mm. Grade Q is the thick option to 150 mm. SHH STEEL does not swap grades on a Code vessel without a written revision.
HSLA Steel Plates and S690QL structural plate are not ASME SA-517. If the equipment is Section VIII, stay on SA517 / A517.
High-Strength QT Vessel Service
ASME SA517 Grade B exists because some vessels need 690 MPa yield in thin plate and do not need the nickel band of Grade F. The 32 mm ceiling is the specification limit, not a mill preference.
Allowable stress for Code work comes from ASME Section II Part D for SA-517 Grade B, not from a mill flyer. Impact temperature is an order number.
Typical use is thinner high-pressure shells, modular equipment, small drums and other fusion-welded parts specified to SA-517 Grade B. It is not a cryogenic 3.5Ni or 9Ni grade, and it is not a creep-focused Cr-Mo grade such as SA387.
Weldability
SA517GRB is a high-strength QT alloy. Welding is not the same job as welding SA516 Gr.70.
Procedures for Code work are qualified to ASME Section IX. Consumables should match the required joint strength and toughness, usually a high-strength low-hydrogen family selected for 690 MPa class steel. Hydrogen control, preheat and interpass still matter at 20–32 mm. Grade B has boron and enough hardenability that a cold, restrained start can crack.
Preheat depends on thickness, restraint, hydrogen and the qualified WPS. After welding, many shops want to PWHT. On QT plate that decision has to be engineered. A shop cycle that is too hot or too long can drop yield below the SA-517 table. Simulated PWHT of mill coupons should be on the purchase order whenever the vessel specification includes PWHT.
Do not copy an SA516 or SA537 procedure onto ASME SA517 Grade B. Do not assume a Grade F WPS is automatically valid if nickel matching changes. Procedure review can go through steel welding services. The fabricator owns the qualified WPS.
Heat Treatment
Heat treatment of ASME SA517 Grade B follows ASME SA-517/SA-517M:
- Heat to not less than 900 °C (1650 °F)
- Quench in water or oil
- Temper at not less than 620 °C (1150 °F)
That sequence is the product. As-rolled plate is not SA517 Grade B. Normalized-only plate is not SA517 Grade B.
Holding time follows mill practice and ASME SA-20 thickness rules. If the purchaser fixes a tempering band or a maximum tempering temperature because later PWHT is planned, those limits go on the mill instruction and onto the certificate.
SHH STEEL reports the actual heat-treatment condition on the MTC for every SA517 Gr.B plate.
Delivery Condition
Delivery condition for this grade is quenched and tempered. That is the only standard condition.
The certificate lists ASME SA517 Grade B and, when dual certified, ASTM A517 Grade B; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; reduction of area; Charpy lateral expansion and test temperature; heat-treatment temperatures; and supplementary tests.
Surface is vessel-plate quality. Shot blasting and shop primer are available. Decorative 2B or BA finishes are not used on QT vessel plate.
Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness quench, temper, mechanical tests and documents when the order says so.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for SA517 Gr.B QT high strength vessel plate:
- Thickness: 8 mm – 32 mm (Grade B maximum in ASME SA-517 is 32 mm)
- Width: up to about 4000 mm
- Length: up to about 12000 mm
If the inquiry is 40 mm, say so immediately. That thickness is outside Grade B. Cut-to-length shells and nest sizes are available inside the 32 mm limit.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances. QT plate can move during quench; extra-flatness is a negotiated item.
Ultrasonic testing to A435 or A578 is commonly added. Finished sizes go through steel cutting services. Thermal cutting of 690 MPa QT plate needs preheat and edge control.
Supplementary Requirements
Most ASME SA517 Grade B orders add tests beyond the base table.
Simulated PWHT. Same-heat coupons follow the vessel cycle. Tensile and Charpy are run after that cycle.
Charpy details. Base spec is lateral expansion 0.38 mm, temperature agreed. Purchasers often add energy minima and a stated test temperature.
NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578; edge MT/PT after cutting.
Hardness survey. Surface HBW/HV after QT or after simulated PWHT.
Restricted chemistry. Tighter P, S, residuals or vacuum treatment per A20.
HIC / NACE. Only when the datasheet cites TM0284 or MR0175 / ISO 15156. Grade B is not automatically sour-service plate.
Z-direction. A770 or Z15/Z25/Z35 when the joint is strained.
Third-party. Witness of quench, temper, testing and documents. Output can be EN 10204 3.2.
These tests run through steel testing service. If it is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
SHH STEEL works as a China Mill Direct Exporter for plates to ASME SA-517/SA-517M. On ASME SA517 Grade B that means mill pricing, dual SA517/A517 marking, heat and product analysis, mandatory QT with recorded temperatures, Charpy lateral expansion at the agreed temperature, 3.1 as standard and 3.2 when specified, and the extra tests a 690 MPa vessel shop actually writes on the PO.
We also keep the order on the right grade. Grade B is not Grade F. Grade B is not SA537 Class 2. Grade B is not A514. If the thickness is 40 mm, we will say so before anyone tries to buy Grade B. Export packing goes through worldwide shipping service. Company scope: China steel Mill Agent-SHH STEEL.
FAQ
- What names are used for ASME SA517 Grade B?Buyers write SA517 Gr.B, SA517GRB, SA517 GR B, SA-517 Grade B, ASTM A517 Grade B and A517GRB. They all mean Grade B in ASME SA-517/SA-517M. SHH STEEL prints the wording on the purchase order.
- Is ASME SA517 Grade B the same as ASTM A517 Grade B?Chemistry and tensile limits match. ASME SA-517 is the Code version used with ASME Section VIII. ASTM A517 is the product spec. As China mill-Direct Supply, SHH STEEL dual-certifies SA517 Gr.B / A517 Gr.B when the vessel must be stamped.
- What is the yield strength of SA517 Gr.B?690 MPa minimum through 32 mm. Tensile is 795–930 MPa. Grade B is not furnished above 32 mm under ASME SA-517.
- Why specify Grade B instead of Grade F or Grade Q?Strength is the same where thickness overlaps. Grade B stops at 32 mm and has no specified nickel. Grade F stops at 65 mm and adds nickel. Grade Q goes to 150 mm. Follow the grade and thickness on the drawing.
- Is SA517GRB the same as A514 or S690QL?No. Those are structural specifications. ASME SA517 Grade B is a pressure-vessel plate under SA-517 and SA-20. Do not substitute structural QT plate on a Section VIII vessel.
- What heat treatment does ASME SA517 Grade B require?Quench and temper. Austenitize at not less than 900 °C, quench in water or oil, temper at not less than 620 °C. As-rolled or normalize-only delivery is not this grade.
- Can welding of SA517 Gr.B be qualified to ASME Section IX?Yes. It is a fusion-welded vessel plate. Use a high-strength low-hydrogen WPS written for this alloy and thickness. The fabricator owns the procedure.
- Can SHH STEEL issue EN 10204 3.2 on ASME SA517 Grade B?Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 or another third-party witness is arranged when it is written on the order.
- What is the density of SA517 Gr.B plate?7.85 g/cm³. SHH STEEL uses this value for shipping-weight estimates on ASME SA-517 plate.
