What is N 10028-6 P355QL1 Steel?

P355QL1 is the −40 °C quenched-and-tempered quality in the P355 family of EN 10028-6. Buyers search EN 10028-6 P355QL1, P355QL1 steel plate, 1.8868, P355QL1 QT -40°C vessel plate and P355QL1 supplier. QL1 is the low-temperature letter set on a QT route. This page is not P355Q. Q is room-temperature QT. This page is not P355QH. QH is elevated-temperature QT. This page is not P355QL2. QL2 is −60 °C. This page is not EN 10028-3 P355NL1. NL1 is normalized −40 °C. This page is not EN 10028-5 P355ML1. ML1 is TMCP −40 °C.

Yield is 355 MPa at ≤50 mm. Tensile is 490–630 MPa. Steel number is 1.8868. Delivery is QT (Q). Charpy is specified at −40 °C when the order follows QL1. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-6, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.

If a drawing says P355Q, we will not ship P355QL1 and call 355 enough. If a drawing says P355NL1, we will not ship P355QL1 and call −40 °C automatic dual name unless both books are met. Dual marking with 16MnDR steel plate is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact temperature and delivery all fit.

Phosphorus and sulfur sit tighter than on P355Q because QL1 is a toughness quality. 355 MPa still comes from quench and temper, not from extra carbon. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.

Mechanical Properties

Buyers search P355QL1 mechanical properties, P355QL1 impact and P355QL1 -40°C. Yield still falls with thickness. Impact is the QL1 item.

Elongation is typically 22% min on thinner plate. Charpy for QL1 is −40 °C. Energy is commonly 27 J average when the order follows the book. Location and orientation must be written. Do not assume QL2 −60 °C on this page.

Do not quote 355 MPa yield on a 120 mm plate. Do not treat −40 °C as permission to stamp 16MnDR steel plate or EN 10028-3 P355NL1 without checking both books.

QT -40°C Pressure-Vessel Service

Buyers pick P355QL1 when a PED file wants 355 MPa QT plate and Charpy at −40 °C. Search phrases such as P355QL1 -40°C, P355QL1 QT and 1.8868 steel plate all point here.

It is not a substitute for 09MnNiDR steel plate. That grade is −70 °C. It is not a substitute for 08Ni3DR steel plate. That grade is 3.5Ni. An ASME QT file should name SA-517 with a written −40 °C extra. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met.

SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Weldability

P355QL1 is killed QT fine-grain C-Mn vessel plate. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.

Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must keep toughness at −40 °C. A procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 without an impact extra is not automatically valid. A TMCP procedure written for EN 10028-5 P355ML1 is a different heat-affected-zone story. Preheat and interpass must stay inside the qualified window so the QT structure is not damaged. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is quenched and tempered EN 10028-6 P355QL1 (Q). This is not +N from EN 10028-3 and not M from EN 10028-5.

If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Impact after simulated PWHT is worth naming on a −40 °C QT file. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists EN 10028-6 P355QL1; 1.8868; heat number; cast analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; Q / QT; Charpy at −40 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P355QL1 QT -40°C vessel plate:

  • Thickness: commonly 8 mm – 150 mm, thicker by mill agreement
  • Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
  • Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm

Normalized −40 °C plate belongs on EN 10028-3 P355NL1. TMCP −40 °C plate belongs on EN 10028-5 P355ML1.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits for EN 10028-6 P355QL1 follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the purchase order names another table. Class A is the usual mill default for P355QL1 QT -40°C vessel plate. Class B, Class C or Class D is supplied only when written. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED −40 °C QT plate without writing them.

Typical thickness tolerance idea for P355QL1 (EN 10029 Class A, reference)

Nominal thickness (mm)Class A minus (mm)Class A plus (mm)
8 – 15−0.5+0.9
15 – 25−0.6+1.0
25 – 40−0.7+1.1
40 – 80−0.8+1.2
80 – 150−1.0+1.4

Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless the mill quote names a tighter extra. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows EN 10029 Class N unless Class S is written. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. If the vessel calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus on the RFQ. SHH STEEL will not assume Class B or a zero-minus extra on P355QL1 unless the order says so.

Supplementary Requirements

Charpy details. Write −40 °C, joules, location and orientation.

Impact after simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved.

Product analysis. Especially P, S, Al and N.

NDE. EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A578 as named.

Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
