What is EN 10028-6 P690QL2 Steel ?
P690QL2 is the −60 °C quenched-and-tempered quality in the P690 family of EN 10028-6. Buyers search EN 10028-6 P690QL2, P690QL2 steel plate, 1.8944, P690QL2 QT -60°C vessel plate and P690QL2 supplier. QL2 is colder than QL1. This page is not P690Q. Q is room-temperature QT. This page is not P690QH. QH is elevated-temperature QT. This page is not P690QL1. QL1 is −40 °C. This page is not P500QL2. P500QL2 is a 500 MPa step. This page is not S690QL1. S690QL1 is EN 10025-6 structural QT steel.
Yield is 690 MPa at ≤50 mm. Tensile is 770–940 MPa. Steel number is 1.8944. Delivery is QT (Q). Charpy is specified at −60 °C when the order follows QL2. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-6, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
If a drawing says P690QL1, we will not ship P690QL2 and call colder automatically better without the buyer writing the name. If a drawing says −60 °C, we will not ship QL1 and call minus forty close. Dual marking with SA517 Grade Q is possible only when both books are fully met.

Phosphorus and sulfur stay tight because QL2 is a colder toughness quality than P690Q. 690 MPa still comes from quench and temper plus Ni-Cr-Mo micro-alloying, not from extra carbon. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search P690QL2 mechanical properties, P690QL2 impact and P690QL2 -60°C. Yield still falls with thickness. Impact is the QL2 item.
Tensile and Yield — EN 10028-6 P690QL2
| Thickness (mm) | Yield min (MPa) | Tensile (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 50 | 690 | 770 – 940 |

Elongation is typically 14% min on thinner plate. Charpy for QL2 is −60 °C. Energy is commonly 27 J average when the order follows the book. Location and orientation must be written. Do not assume QL1 −40 °C is enough for a QL2 drawing.
Do not quote 690 MPa yield on a 120 mm plate. Do not treat −60 °C as permission to stamp SA517 Grade Q or S690QL1 without checking both books.

QT -60°C 690 MPa Pressure-Vessel Service
Buyers pick P690QL2 when a PED file wants 690 MPa QT plate and Charpy at −60 °C. Search phrases such as P690QL2 -60°C, P690QL2 QT and 1.8944 steel plate all point here.
It is not a substitute for 09MnNiDR steel plate. That grade is −70 °C nickel steel. It is not a substitute for 08Ni3DR steel plate. That grade is 3.5Ni. It is not LNG inner-tank plate. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. An ASME QT file should name SA-517 or SA-543 with a written −60 °C extra. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
P690QL2 is killed QT high-strength vessel plate at 770–940 MPa tensile. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must keep toughness at −60 °C, not only at −40 °C. A P690QL1 procedure is the previous family. A carbon procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 is far too light. Preheat, interpass and hydrogen control must stay inside the qualified window so the QT structure is not damaged and delayed cracking is avoided. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is quenched and tempered EN 10028-6 P690QL2 (Q). This is not +N from EN 10028-3 and not M from EN 10028-5.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Impact after simulated PWHT is worth naming on a −60 °C 690 MPa QT file. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-6 P690QL2; 1.8944; heat number; cast analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; Q / QT; Charpy at −60 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P690QL2 QT -60°C vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 8 mm – 150 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Structural −60 °C 690 QT plate belongs on EN 10025-6. ASME QT vessel plate belongs on SA517 Grade Q.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for EN 10028-6 P690QL2 follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the purchase order names another table. Class A is the usual mill default for P690QL2 QT -60°C vessel plate. Class B, Class C or Class D is supplied only when written. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED −60 °C QT plate without writing them.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for P690QL2 (EN 10029 Class A, reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Class A minus (mm) | Class A plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 – 15 | −0.5 | +0.9 |
| 15 – 25 | −0.6 | +1.0 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.7 | +1.1 |
| 40 – 80 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
| 80 – 150 | −1.0 | +1.4 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless the mill quote names a tighter extra. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows EN 10029 Class N unless Class S is written. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. If the vessel calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus on the RFQ. SHH STEEL will not assume Class B or a zero-minus extra on P690QL2 unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
EN 10028-6 P690QL2 is already a −60 °C high-strength QT quality. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order. SHH STEEL will not assume them from the grade name alone.
Charpy details. Write −60 °C, joules, specimen size, location and orientation. Transverse and longitudinal are not the same test. Do not write “impact as per EN 10028-6” and expect the mill to guess QL2.
Impact after simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved, name the hold temperature, hold time and cooling rate used on the test coupon. A 690 MPa QT plate can lose toughness after a long PWHT cycle. The coupon should see the same cycle the vessel will see.
Product analysis. Especially P, S, Al, N, Ni, Cr, Mo, B, Nb and V on finished plate. Cast analysis alone is not always enough for a destination file that wants product analysis.
Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when the plate will be welded in the thickness direction or used for nozzles and tees. Reduction of area must sit on the certificate.
NDE. EN 10160 class, ASTM A435 or ASTM A578 as named. Write scanning extent and acceptance class. For thick QT plate, UT after quench and temper is the usual route.
Hardness. If the destination file caps hardness after QT or after simulated PWHT, write the max HB or HV and the test location.
HIC / SSC / NACE. Only when the equipment is sour service. P690QL2 is not automatically NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Write the test method, solution and acceptance if required.
Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named. Hold points for heat treatment, tensile, −60 °C impact and UT should be listed on the ITP.
Identification and stamping. Heat number, grade P690QL2 / 1.8944, QT, thickness and mill logo on each plate. Transfer marks after cutting if the plate will be cut before shipment.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| PED high-strength low-temp QT vessels | EN 10028-6 P690QL2 shells at −60 °C |
| Cold-service high-pressure tanks | P690QL2 courses |
| Dual-certified export | P690QL2 / SA517 Grade Q when both books fit |
| Comparison vs structural 690 | P690QL2 next to EN 10025-6 S690QL1 |
P690QL2 is the plate for a 690 MPa PED file that wants QT and −60 °C. It is the wrong plate for LNG inner tanks. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. It is the wrong plate for −40 °C only. That work is P690QL1.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: keep the letters after P690. Q, QH, QL1 and QL2 are four different purchase orders. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices P690QL2 from first-line mills, reports 1.8944 chemistry, records QT, prints Charpy at −60 °C when ordered, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. P690QL2 is not P690Q. P690QL2 is not P690QL1. P690QL2 is not S690QL1. P690QL2 is not Q345R steel plate. If the drawing says −40 °C, we will not ship QL2 and call colder automatically better without the buyer writing the name.
