What is EN 10028-5 P420ML2 Steel ?
P420ML2 is the −50 °C TMCP quality in the P420 family of EN 10028-5. Buyers search EN 10028-5 P420ML2, P420ML2 steel plate, 1.8836, P420ML2 TMCP -50°C vessel plate and P420ML2 supplier. ML2 is colder than ML1. This page is not P420M. M is room-temperature TMCP. This page is not P420ML1. ML1 is −40 °C. This page is not P420NL2. P420NL2 is EN 10028-3 normalized plate. This page is not P355ML2. P355ML2 is a 355 MPa step. This page is not S420ML. S420ML is EN 10025-4 structural steel.
Yield is 420 MPa at ≤16 mm. Tensile is 520–680 MPa. Steel number is 1.8836. Delivery is TMCP (M). Charpy is specified at −50 °C when the order follows ML2. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-5, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
If a drawing says P420ML1, we will not ship P420ML2 and call colder automatically better without the buyer writing the name. If a drawing says −50 °C, we will not ship ML1 and call minus forty close. Dual marking with Q420DR steel plate is possible only when both books are fully met.

Phosphorus and sulfur stay tight because ML2 is a colder toughness quality than P420M. 420 MPa still comes from TMCP plus micro-alloying, not from extra carbon. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search P420ML2 mechanical properties, P420ML2 impact and P420ML2 -50°C. Yield still falls with thickness. Impact is the ML2 item.

Elongation is typically 19% min on thinner plate. Charpy for ML2 is −50 °C. Energy is commonly 27 J average when the order follows the book. Location and orientation must be written. Do not assume ML1 −40 °C is enough for an ML2 drawing.
Do not quote 420 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat −50 °C as permission to stamp Q420DR steel plate or P420NL2 without checking both books.

TMCP -50°C 420 MPa Pressure-Vessel Service
Buyers pick P420ML2 when a PED file wants 420 MPa TMCP plate and Charpy at −50 °C. Search phrases such as P420ML2 -50°C, P420ML2 TMCP and 1.8836 steel plate all point here.
It is not a substitute for 09MnNiDR steel plate. That grade is −70 °C. It is not a substitute for 08Ni3DR steel plate. That grade is 3.5Ni. It is not LNG inner-tank plate. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. An ASME file should name SA-841 with a written −50 °C extra. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
P420ML2 is killed TMCP fine-grain C-Mn vessel plate at 520–680 MPa tensile. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must keep toughness at −50 °C, not only at −40 °C. A P420ML1 procedure is the previous family. A carbon procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 may be light on strength. Heat input on TMCP plate should stay controlled so the rolled grain is not coarsened in the HAZ. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is thermomechanically rolled EN 10028-5 P420ML2 (M). This is not +N from EN 10028-3.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Impact after simulated PWHT is worth naming on a −50 °C 420 MPa TMCP file. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-5 P420ML2; 1.8836; heat number; cast analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; M / TMCP; Charpy at −50 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P420ML2 TMCP -50°C vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 80 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Normalized −50 °C 420 plate belongs on EN 10028-3 P420NL2. Structural TMCP belongs on EN 10025-4.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for EN 10028-5 P420ML2 follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the purchase order names another table. Class A is the usual mill default for P420ML2 TMCP -50°C vessel plate. Class B, Class C or Class D is supplied only when written. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED −50 °C TMCP plate without writing them. When dual-named against SA841 Grade B Class 1, write whether EN 10029 or SA-20 governs the minus on thickness.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for P420ML2 (EN 10029 Class A, reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Class A minus (mm) | Class A plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 8 | −0.4 | +0.8 |
| 8 – 15 | −0.5 | +0.9 |
| 15 – 25 | −0.6 | +1.0 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.7 | +1.1 |
| 40 – 80 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless the mill quote names a tighter extra. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows EN 10029 Class N unless Class S is written. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. If the vessel calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus on the RFQ. SHH STEEL will not assume Class B or a zero-minus extra on P420ML2 unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
Charpy details. Write −50 °C, joules, location and orientation. Do not write “impact as per EN 10028-5” and expect the mill to guess ML2.
Impact after simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved.
Product analysis. Especially P, S, Al, N, Nb and V.
NDE. EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A578 as named.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| PED high-strength low-temp TMCP vessels | EN 10028-5 P420ML2 shells at −50 °C |
| Cold-service storage tanks | P420ML2 courses |
| Dual-certified export | P420ML2 / Q420DR steel plate when both books fit |
| ASME comparison jobs | P420ML2 next to SA841 Grade B Class 1 |
P420ML2 is the plate for a 420 MPa PED file that wants TMCP and −50 °C. It is the wrong plate for LNG inner tanks. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. It is the wrong plate for −40 °C only. That work is P420ML1.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: keep the letters after P420. M, ML1 and ML2 are three different purchase orders. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices P420ML2 from first-line mills, reports 1.8836 chemistry, records TMCP, prints Charpy at −50 °C when ordered, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. P420ML2 is not P420M. P420ML2 is not P420ML1. P420ML2 is not P355ML2. P420ML2 is not Q345R steel plate. If the drawing says −40 °C, we will not ship ML2 and call colder automatically better without the buyer writing the name.
