EN 10028-5 P420ML1 Steel Plate | P420ML1 TMCP -40°C Vessel Plate
What is EN 10028-5 P420ML1 Steel?
P420ML1 is the −40 °C TMCP quality in the P420 family of EN 10028-5. Buyers search EN 10028-5 P420ML1, P420ML1 steel plate, 1.8835, P420ML1 TMCP -40°C vessel plate and P420ML1 supplier. ML1 is the low-temperature letter set on a thermomechanically rolled route. This page is not P420M. M is room-temperature TMCP. This page is not P420ML2. ML2 is −50 °C. This page is not P420NL1. P420NL1 is EN 10028-3 normalized plate. This page is not P355ML1. P355ML1 is a 355 MPa step. This page is not S420ML. S420ML is EN 10025-4 structural steel.
Yield is 420 MPa at ≤16 mm. Tensile is 520–680 MPa. Steel number is 1.8835. Delivery is TMCP (M). Charpy is specified at −40 °C when the order follows ML1. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-5, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
If a drawing says P420M, we will not ship P420ML1 and call 420 enough. If a drawing says P420NL1, we will not ship P420ML1 and call −40 °C automatic dual name unless both books are met. Dual marking with Q420DR steel plate is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact temperature and delivery all fit.

Phosphorus and sulfur sit tighter than on P420M because ML1 is a toughness quality. 420 MPa still comes from TMCP plus micro-alloying, not from extra carbon. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search P420ML1 mechanical properties, P420ML1 impact and P420ML1 -40°C. Yield still falls with thickness. Impact is the ML1 item.

TMCP -40°C 420 MPa Pressure-Vessel Service
Buyers pick P420ML1 when a PED file wants 420 MPa TMCP plate and Charpy at −40 °C. Search phrases such as P420ML1 -40°C, P420ML1 TMCP and 1.8835 steel plate all point here.
It is not a substitute for 16MnDR steel plate. That grade is a 355 / −40 °C step. It is not a substitute for 08Ni3DR steel plate. That grade is 3.5Ni. An ASME file should name SA-841 with a written −40 °C extra. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
P420ML1 is killed TMCP fine-grain C-Mn vessel plate at 520–680 MPa tensile. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must keep toughness at −40 °C and match the 420 MPa band. A P355ML1 procedure is the previous family. A carbon procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 may be light on strength. Heat input on TMCP plate should stay controlled so the rolled grain is not coarsened in the HAZ. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is thermomechanically rolled EN 10028-5 P420ML1 (M). This is not +N from EN 10028-3.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Impact after simulated PWHT is worth naming on a −40 °C 420 MPa TMCP file. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-5 P420ML1; 1.8835; heat number; cast analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; M / TMCP; Charpy at −40 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P420ML1 TMCP -40°C vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 80 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Normalized −40 °C 420 plate belongs on EN 10028-3 P420NL1. Structural TMCP belongs on EN 10025-4.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for EN 10028-5 P420ML1 follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the purchase order names another table. Class A is the usual mill default for P420ML1 TMCP -40°C vessel plate. Class B, Class C or Class D is supplied only when written. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED −40 °C TMCP plate without writing them. When dual-named against SA841 Grade B Class 1, write whether EN 10029 or SA-20 governs the minus on thickness.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for P420ML1 (EN 10029 Class A, reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Class A minus (mm) | Class A plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 8 | −0.4 | +0.8 |
| 8 – 15 | −0.5 | +0.9 |
| 15 – 25 | −0.6 | +1.0 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.7 | +1.1 |
| 40 – 80 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless the mill quote names a tighter extra. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows EN 10029 Class N unless Class S is written. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. If the vessel calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus on the RFQ. SHH STEEL will not assume Class B or a zero-minus extra on P420ML1 unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
Charpy details. Write −40 °C, joules, location and orientation.
Impact after simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved.
Product analysis. Especially P, S, Al, N, Nb and V.
NDE. EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A578 as named.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| PED high-strength low-temp TMCP vessels | EN 10028-5 P420ML1 shells at −40 °C |
| Storage tanks and drums | P420ML1 courses |
| Dual-certified export | P420ML1 / Q420DR steel plate when both books fit |
| ASME comparison jobs | P420ML1 next to SA841 Grade B Class 1 |
P420ML1 is the plate for a 420 MPa PED file that wants TMCP and −40 °C. It is the wrong plate for LNG inner tanks. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate. It is the wrong plate for −50 °C. That work is P420ML2.
