EN 10028-5 P420M Steel Plate | P420M TMCP Vessel Plate supplier
What is EN 10028-5 P420M Steel ?
P420M is the room-temperature TMCP grade in the P420 family of EN 10028-5. Buyers search EN 10028-5 P420M, P420M steel plate, 1.8827, P420M TMCP vessel plate and P420M supplier. The letter M means thermomechanically rolled fine-grain plate. This page is not P420ML1. ML1 is −40 °C. This page is not P420ML2. ML2 is −50 °C. This page is not P420N or P420NH. Those grades are EN 10028-3 normalized plate. This page is not P355M. P355M is a 355 MPa step. This page is not S420M. S420M is EN 10025-4 structural steel.
Yield is 420 MPa at ≤16 mm. Tensile is 520–680 MPa. Steel number is 1.8827. Delivery is TMCP (M), not +N. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-5, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
If a drawing says P420ML1, we will not ship P420M and call 420 enough. If a drawing says P355M, we will not ship P420M and call stronger automatically acceptable. Dual marking with Q420R steel plate is possible only when both books are fully met.

Mechanical Properties
Buyers search P420M mechanical properties, P420M yield strength and P420M TMCP. Yield still falls with thickness.
Tensile and Yield — EN 10028-5 P420M
| Thickness (mm) | Yield min (MPa) | Tensile (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 16 | 420 | 520 – 680 |
| 16 – 40 | 400 | 520 – 680 |
| 40 – 63 | 390 | 500 – 660 |
| 63 – 80 | 370 | 490 – 650 |
| 80 – 100 | 360 | 480 – 640 |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Elongation is typically 19% min on thinner plate. Room-temperature quality M does not automatically include −40 °C Charpy. If the file needs −40 °C, the grade name is P420ML1. If the file needs −50 °C, the grade name is P420ML2.
Do not quote 420 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 520–680 MPa tensile as permission to stamp Q420R steel plate or SA537 Class 1 without checking both books.

TMCP 420 MPa Pressure-Vessel Service
Buyers pick P420M when a PED file wants 420 MPa TMCP plate and does not name ML impact. Search phrases such as P420M TMCP, P420M boiler plate and 1.8827 steel plate all point here.
It is not a substitute for Q420DR steel plate unless both books are met. It is not a substitute for SA841 Grade B Class 1 unless both books are met. An ASME TMCP file should name SA-841. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact and delivery all fit.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
P420M is killed TMCP fine-grain C-Mn vessel plate at 520–680 MPa tensile. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must match the 420 MPa / 520–680 MPa band. A procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 may be light on strength. A P355M procedure is the previous family. Heat input on TMCP plate should stay controlled so the rolled grain is not coarsened in the HAZ. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is thermomechanically rolled EN 10028-5 P420M (M). This is not +N from EN 10028-3 and not QT from EN 10025-6.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. TMCP properties can move after a long stress-relief cycle. Simulated PWHT on test coupons is worth naming. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-5 P420M; 1.8827; heat number; cast analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; M / TMCP; impact only when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for P420M TMCP vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 80 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Normalized 420 fine-grain plate belongs on EN 10028-3. Structural TMCP belongs on EN 10025-4.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the order names another table. Class A is the usual default. If the calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED 420 MPa TMCP plate without writing them. When dual-named against SA841 Grade B Class 1, write which thickness table governs.
Supplementary Requirements
Charpy details. P420M does not assume −40 °C. Write temperature and orientation if impact is required.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. EN 10160 or the named UT class.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| PED high-strength drums | EN 10028-5 P420M shells |
| TMCP heat-exchanger shells | P420M courses |
| Room-temp 420 MPa vessels | P420M plate from SHH STEEL |
| Dual-certified export | P420M / Q420R steel plate when both books fit |
P420M is the plate for a file that wants 420 MPa TMCP steel and does not name ML impact. It is the wrong plate for a winter tank at −40 °C. That work is P420ML1. It is the wrong plate for a normalized EN 10028-3 file. That work is P420N.
Supply Capability
SHH STEEL sources EN 10028-5 P420M from first-line Chinese mills and ships it on worldwide terms. Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: keep the letter after P420. M, ML1 and ML2 are three different purchase orders, and none of them is P420N. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices P420M from first-line mills, reports 1.8827 chemistry, records TMCP, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. P420M is not P355M. P420M is not P420ML1. P420M is not P420N. P420M is not Q345R steel plate. If the drawing says P420ML2, we will not ship P420M and call TMCP close.
