What is ASTM A562 Steel?

ASTM A562 is titanium-bearing carbon steel plate intended for welded glass-lined pressure vessels, or for other service where free iron carbide would damage the coating. The specification is ASTM A562/A562M. There is no Grade A, Grade B or Grade 70 split. The product is one chemistry with one tensile table, a mandatory titanium-to-carbon ratio, and a thickness ceiling of 50 mm (2 in.). As Direct Mill Supply by SHH STEEL, the plate is produced to ASTM A562/A562M.

The same plate is written A562, A562M, ASTM A562, ASME SA562, SA562, SA-562, SA562M and A/SA562. They all mean this specification. ASME SA-562/SA-562M is the Code companion used when the vessel will be stamped to ASME Section VIII.

This plate exists because glass lining and certain diffused metallic coatings fail when the steel surface still holds free iron carbide. Titanium is added so that carbon is tied as titanium carbide. The specification requires titanium minimum = 4 × carbon. That ratio is the whole point of the grade. A carbon vessel plate without that ratio is not A562, even if tensile numbers look similar.

This is not SA516 Gr.70 and not A516 Gr.70. Those pages are fine-grain carbon for unlined boilers and process vessels. It is not SA515 Gr.70 or A515 Gr.70. A515 / SA515 is silicon-killed carbon for intermediate and higher temperature. It is not SA285 Gr.C or A285 Gr.C. A285 Grade C is low-to-intermediate tensile carbon with no titanium rule and no coating purpose.

It is not Mn-Mo plate like SA302 Gr.B or A302 Gr.B. It is not nickel plate like SA203 Gr.A or A203 Gr.A. It is not Cr-Mo like SA387 Gr.22 Cl.2. It is not QT 690 MPa plate like SA517 Gr.Q or A517 Gr.Q. A mill cannot recertify those heats as A562.

The steel shall be killed. Plates shall be thermally treated to produce grain refinement, either by normalizing or by heating uniformly for hot forming at a minimum of 870 °C (1600 °F) or a higher agreed temperature, held at least 1 hour per inch (2.4 min/mm) of thickness. As-rolled plate is not A562.

Maximum thickness furnished under this specification is 50 mm. If the inquiry is 60 mm or 80 mm, A562 is the wrong book. Move the conversation to SA516 Gr.70, SA515 Gr.70 or SA537 Cl.1 only if the drawing is no longer a lined or coated specification.

For Code work the plate is dual-marked ASTM A562 / ASME SA562. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

When a project is still choosing carbon vessel plate, a China mill Agent path through SHH STEEL puts A562 next to SA516 Gr.60, SA285 Gr.A and A36 steel plate, so the buyer can see whether they need Mn-Ti coating plate, fine-grain carbon, low-tensile carbon or structural carbon. Chemical Composition

Chemistry for ASTM A562 is reported as heat analysis and product analysis under ASTM A562/A562M Table 1. Carbon is low. Titanium is not a residual; it is a specified minimum tied to carbon.

Heat Analysis — ASTM A562 / A562M

ElementHeat Analysis (%)
Carbon (C), max0.12
Manganese (Mn), max1.20
Phosphorus (P), max0.035
Sulfur (S), max0.040
Silicon (Si)0.15 – 0.50
Copper (Cu), max0.15
Titanium (Ti), min4 × C

Product Analysis — A562 / SA562

ElementProduct Analysis (%)
Carbon (C), max0.12
Manganese (Mn), max1.30
Phosphorus (P), max0.035
Sulfur (S), max0.040
Silicon (Si)0.15 – 0.50
Copper (Cu), max0.15
Titanium (Ti), min4 × C

Carbon 0.12% max applies to both heat and product analysis. If heat carbon is 0.10%, titanium must be at least 0.40%. If heat carbon is 0.08%, titanium must be at least 0.32%. A ladle with 0.10% C and 0.25% Ti does not meet A562, even if tensile is inside the table.

Manganese is a maximum: 1.20% heat, 1.30% product. Silicon is 0.15–0.50%. Copper is limited to 0.15%. That copper cap matters on coating jobs; extra copper is not a free extra.

Vacuum carbon-deoxidized steel may be specified under A20 / SA-20 supplementary S17. That option does not remove the titanium-to-carbon ratio.

Compare that ladle with nearby carbon pages. SA516 Gr.70 has no Ti ≥ 4C rule. SA515 Gr.65 is silicon-killed high-temp carbon. SA285 Gr.C allows more carbon and has no titanium minimum. SA302 Gr.C is Mn-Mo-Ni, not Mn-Ti.

If the drawing says ASTM A562 or A562M, the ladle must sit in this table and the certificate must show titanium against carbon. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate, including Ti and C so the ratio can be checked, and adds product analysis when A20 / SA-20 or the vessel specification requires it.

Mechanical Properties

A562 uses one tensile window. Strength is not the reason this grade exists. Coating compatibility is.

Tensile Requirements — ASTM A562 per ASTM A562/A562M

PropertyRequirement
Tensile strength380 – 515 MPa (55 – 75 ksi)
Yield strength, min205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 200 mm (8 in.), min22%
Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min26%

Yield is determined by the 0.2% offset method or the 0.5% extension-under-load method. Elongation adjustments follow A20 / SA-20 when specimen thickness requires them.

That tensile window sits next to SA285 Gr.C (380–515 MPa) and below SA516 Gr.70 (485–620 MPa). Overlap on tensile is not identity. SA285 and SA516 do not carry the titanium ratio or the coating heat-treatment clause.

Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness is not a default line. Charpy is not a hidden default. If the lining shop or the vessel specification wants a stated impact temperature, write it as a supplementary requirement.

Do not treat 205 MPa yield as a reason to substitute A36 steel plate. A36 is structural. A562 is killed, thermally treated Mn-Ti vessel plate for a coating.

Order ASTM A562 when the drawing names glass lining, enamel lining, or a diffused metallic coating on a carbon vessel. SHH STEEL does not swap A562 for A516 Gr.70 because the tensile tables look close.

Glass Lining and Coated Vessel Service

ASTM A562 is selected when the finished equipment will carry a glass lining or a diffused metallic coating, and free iron carbide would attack that coating. Titanium ties carbon. Grain-refinement heat treatment gives a surface the lining shop can work with.

When the vessel is ASME stamped, allowable stress comes from Section II Part D for SA-562 after dual marking. Impact temperature is an order number.

Typical use is glass-lined reactors, glass-lined storage vessels, and other fusion-welded equipment written to A562 / SA562. It is not a replacement for SA387 Gr.91 Cl.2 creep service and not a replacement for SA203 Gr.E nickel low-temp service.

The lining process itself belongs to the fabricator and the lining contractor. The mill’s job is chemistry, grain-refinement treatment, surface quality and the certificate that shows Ti ≥ 4C.

Weldability

A562 is killed low-carbon Mn-Ti plate. Welding is still Code welding.

Procedures for Code work are qualified to ASME Section IX. Low-hydrogen consumables such as E7018 (AWS A5.1) are the usual shop choice. Carbon is capped at 0.12%, so hardenability is lower than SA517 Gr.B or SA387 Gr.12 Cl.2. Titanium and the later lining cycle still need a written WPS, not a memory of “soft carbon.”

Preheat depends on thickness, restraint and hydrogen. After welding, many glass-lined shops have a forming or lining heat cycle. Simulated heat treatment of mill coupons should be on the purchase order when that cycle is known.

Do not copy a SA387 Gr.22 Cl.1 Cr-Mo procedure or a SA517 Gr.A QT procedure onto ASTM A562. The fabricator owns the WPS.

Heat Treatment

Plates shall be thermally treated to produce grain refinement by one of two routes:

  1. Normalizing, or
  2. Heating uniformly for hot forming at a minimum of 870 °C (1600 °F) or a higher agreed temperature, held at least 1 hour per inch (2.4 min/mm) of thickness.

As-rolled plate is not A562. Quench-and-temper practice used for SA517 Gr.E or A517 Gr.E is not this grade.

If the purchaser fixes a normalizing temperature band because a later lining fire is planned, those limits go on the mill instruction and onto the certificate. SHH STEEL reports the actual heat-treatment condition, temperature and soak on the MTC for every A562 plate.

Delivery Condition

Usual delivery is normalized killed Mn-Ti vessel plate, or plate heat-treated for hot forming as specified.

The certificate lists ASTM A562 and, when dual certified, ASME SA562; heat number; heat analysis including C and Ti; the Ti/C ratio; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; heat-treatment temperatures and hold; and supplementary tests.

Surface must be suitable for later lining. Heavy scale, deep pits and unreported laminations are lining defects, not cosmetic notes. Shot blasting can be supplied when specified; the lining contractor still owns the final surface preparation.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness rolling, heat treatment and testing when the order says so.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A562 Mn-Ti coating vessel plate:

  • Thickness: 8 mm – 50 mm (specification maximum)
  • Width: up to about 4000 mm
  • Length: up to about 12000 mm

If the inquiry is thicker than 50 mm, this specification cannot be used. Cut-to-length shells and nest sizes inside 50 mm are available.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances.

Ultrasonic testing to A435, A577 or A578 is commonly added on lining-quality plate. Extra-flatness and restricted surface class are negotiated items because the lining shop sees every dent.

Supplementary Requirements

Most export ASTM A562 orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.

Simulated lining / PWHT cycle. Same-heat coupons follow the fabricator or lining temperature. Tensile and any agreed Charpy are run after that cycle.

Charpy details. Temperature, energy, specimen orientation and location as agreed. Not a hidden default.

NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578; edge MT/PT after cutting. Lining vessels often write UT on the mill order.

Restricted chemistry. Tighter P, S, copper or a stated minimum Ti above 4C.

Vacuum carbon deoxidation. A20 / SA-20 S17 when specified.

Surface class. Shot blast, limited scale, marking method that will not damage later lining.

Third-party. Witness of normalizing, testing and documents. Output can be EN 10204 3.2.

If an item is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed, not tested and not printed as if it were.

Why Choose SHH STEEL

SHH STEEL works as a China Mill Direct Exporter for plates to ASTM A562/A562M. On ASTM A562 that means mill pricing, dual A562/SA562 marking, heat analysis that shows carbon and titanium so the 4 × C ratio can be checked, killed steel, recorded grain-refinement treatment at or above 870 °C with the specified soak, the 50 mm ceiling respected, 3.1 as standard and 3.2 when specified.

We keep the order on the right specification. A562 is not SA516 Gr.55. A562 is not SA285 Gr.A. A562 is not SA517 Gr.Q. If the vessel is unlined carbon, we point the inquiry to SA516 / A516. If it is nickel low-temp, we point it to SA203 / A203. If it is QT 690, we point it to SA517 / A517. If it is glass-lined and the drawing says A562, we will not ship ordinary A516 and call the titanium “close.”

FAQ

What names are used for ASTM A562?
Buyers write A562, A562M, ASTM A562, ASME SA562, SA562 and SA-562. There is no Grade A/B split. SHH STEEL prints the wording on the purchase order.
Is ASTM A562 the same as ASME SA562?
Chemistry and tensile limits match. ASTM A562 is the product spec. ASME SA-562 is the Code version. As China mill-Direct Supply, SHH STEEL dual-certifies A562 / SA562 when the vessel must be stamped.
Why is titanium specified as 4 × carbon?
Titanium ties carbon as carbide so free iron carbide does not attack the glass lining or the metallic coating. If heat carbon is 0.10%, titanium must be at least 0.40%. SHH STEEL prints both numbers on the certificate.
What is the tensile strength of A562?
380–515 MPa. Yield is 205 MPa minimum. Elongation is 22% in 200 mm and 26% in 50 mm, per ASTM A562.
What is the maximum thickness for A562?
50 mm (2 in.). Thicker unlined carbon vessel plate moves to another specification.
Is A562 the same as A516 Gr.70 or A285 Gr.C?
No. Those plates do not have the Ti ≥ 4C rule or the coating heat-treatment clause. Tensile overlap is not a substitute.
What heat treatment does ASTM A562 require?
Grain-refinement treatment by normalizing, or by heating for hot forming at 870 °C minimum with a hold of 1 hour per inch. As-rolled delivery is not this grade.
Can welding of A562 be qualified to ASME Section IX?
Yes, after dual marking or when the construction code requires it. Use a low-hydrogen WPS written for this killed Mn-Ti carbon and the later lining cycle. The fabricator owns the procedure
Can SHH STEEL issue EN 10204 3.2 on ASTM A562?
Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when written on the order.
What is the density of A562 plate?
7.85 g/cm³.

Conclusion

ASTM A562 Steel Plate is killed manganese-titanium carbon vessel plate under ASTM A562/A562M, written for glass lining and diffused metallic coatings, with titanium at least four times carbon, grain-refinement heat treatment, 380–515 MPa tensile and a 50 mm ceiling.
