What is EN 10028-4 12Ni14 Steel?

12Ni14 is the 3.5Ni grade in EN 10028-4. Buyers search EN 10028-4 12Ni14, 12Ni14 steel plate, 1.5637, 12Ni14 3.5Ni -100°C vessel plate and 12Ni14 supplier. Nickel is about 3.25–3.75%. That is why the title says 3.5Ni. This is not 11MnNi5-3 or 13MnNi6-3. Those grades are 0.5Ni and 0.75Ni. This is not X12Ni5. That grade is 5Ni. This is not X8Ni9. X8Ni9 is 9Ni. This is not P355NL2. P355NL2 is EN 10028-3 carbon-manganese plate.

Yield is in the 355 MPa class at the usual thin-plate column. Tensile is 490–640 MPa. Steel number is 1.5637. Delivery is usually normalized (+N) or normalized and tempered (+NT). Charpy is specified at −100 °C when the order follows this grade. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against EN 10028-4, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.

Do not ship 08Ni3DR steel plate against a 12Ni14 drawing and call 3.5Ni automatic dual name unless both books are met. Do not ship SA203 Grade D or SA203 Grade E without checking both books. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact temperature and delivery all fit.

Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.

This plate sits in pressure vessel steel plates. Chinese 3.5Ni belongs on GB/T 713.4. ASME 3.5Ni belongs on ASME SA-203 and ASTM A203. Low-Ni EN sisters stay on EN 10028-4. Fine-grain carbon stays on EN 10028-3.

Chemical Composition

Cast analysis follows EN 10028-4. Product analysis follows EN 10028-1 when ordered. People who search 12Ni14 chemical composition and 1.5637 chemistry want 3.5% nickel on the certificate, not a 13MnNi6-3 table copied across.

Copper (Cu), max0.300.35
Molybdenum (Mo), max0.080.10
Vanadium (V), max0.050.06

Nickel at 3.25–3.75% is the grade marker. That is 3.5Ni, not 0.75Ni and not 9Ni. Carbon stays low because toughness at −100 °C is the job. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.

Mechanical Properties

Buyers search 12Ni14 mechanical properties, 12Ni14 yield strength and 12Ni14 -100°C. Yield falls as thickness rises.

Tensile and Yield — EN 10028-4 12Ni14

Elongation is typically 22% min on thinner plate. Charpy for this grade is −100 °C. Energy is commonly 27 J or 40 J average when the order follows the book. Location and orientation must be written. Do not assume −80 °C from 13MnNi6-3 is enough. Do not assume −196 °C. That is 9Ni.

Do not quote 355 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat −100 °C as permission to stamp 08Ni3DR steel plate or SA203 Grade D without checking both books.

3.5Ni -100°C Pressure-Vessel Service

Buyers pick 12Ni14 when a PED file wants 3.5Ni plate at −100 °C. Search phrases such as 12Ni14 3.5Ni, 12Ni14 -100°C and 1.5637 steel plate all point here.

It is not a substitute for 07Ni5DR steel plate. That grade is 5Ni. It is not a substitute for 06Ni9DR steel plate. That grade is 9Ni −196 °C. It is not LNG inner-tank plate.

An ASME file should name SA-203 Grade D or Grade E on ASME SA203. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met. SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Weldability

12Ni14 is 3.5Ni vessel plate. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.

Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must match 3.5Ni practice and keep toughness at −100 °C. A 0.75Ni procedure written for 13MnNi6-3 is the previous family. A 9Ni procedure written for X8Ni9 is the next family. A carbon procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 is not automatically valid. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized EN 10028-4 12Ni14 (+N) or +NT when the order names temper.

If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Impact after simulated PWHT is worth naming on a −100 °C 3.5Ni file. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists EN 10028-4 12Ni14; 1.5637; heat number; cast analysis including nickel; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; +N or +NT; Charpy at −100 °C when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for 12Ni14 3.5Ni -100°C vessel plate:

  • Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 120 mm, thicker by mill agreement
  • Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
  • Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm

0.75Ni plate is 13MnNi6-3. 5Ni plate is X12Ni5 / 07Ni5DR steel plate. 9Ni plate belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow EN 10028-1 and EN 10029 unless the order names another table. Class A is the usual default. If the calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED −100 °C 3.5Ni plate without writing them. When dual-named against SA203 Grade D, write whether EN 10029 or SA-20 governs thickness extra.

Supplementary Requirements

Charpy details. Write −100 °C, joules, location and orientation.

Impact after simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved.

Product analysis. Especially nickel, P, S and Al.

NDE. EN 10160 or ASTM A435 / A578 as named.

Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.

12Ni14 is the plate for a PED file that wants 3.5Ni at −100 °C and is not yet 5Ni or 9Ni. It is the wrong plate for LNG inner tanks. That work belongs on 06Ni9DR steel plate.

Why Choose SHH STEEL

Experience on this grade is simple: 3.5Ni and −100 °C must both be on the certificate. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices 12Ni14 from first-line mills, reports 1.5637 chemistry including nickel, records +N or +NT, prints Charpy at −100 °C when ordered, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.

We keep the grade on the order. 12Ni14 is not 13MnNi6-3. 12Ni14 is not X12Ni5. 12Ni14 is not X8Ni9. 12Ni14 is not Q345R steel plate. If the drawing says 9Ni, we will not ship 3.5Ni and call nickel close.

Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.
