Heat Analysis — ASTM A573 Grade 58

Each 0.01% C below the listed max may raise Mn by 0.06%, up to 1.50% Mn on Grade 58. Grade 58 manganese is lower than Grade 65 and Grade 70 (those two use 0.85–1.20%). The aluminum minimum does not apply to plates 380 mm wide and under. Do not treat this chemistry as ASTM A36 steel plate or as ASTM A572 Grade 42. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate. Tensile and Yield — ASTM A573 Grade 58

For plates wider than 24 in [600 mm], elongation drops two percentage points. Grade 65 is 450–530 MPa with 240 MPa yield. Grade 70 is 485–620 MPa with 290 MPa yield. Do not quote those numbers on a Grade 58 order.

There is no official one-to-one worldwide swap for A573 Gr.58. Buyers compare 400 MPa structural / tank plate in other books. That is not a certificate swap.

In the United States the governing name is ASTM A573 Grade 58. SA573 Gr.58 is a market spelling, not a standalone ASME vessel book. ASTM A36 steel plate is the everyday structural carbon comparison. ASTM A283 Grade C is another low-to-intermediate carbon plate, not A573.

In Europe the usual comparison is EN 10025-2 S235JR, EN 10025-2 S235J0 or EN 10025-2 S235J2. EN 10025-2 S275JR is a step up and closer to Grade 65 than Grade 58. Those pages sit on EN 10025-2.

In China the nearest carbon structural comparison is GB/T 700 Q235 (Q235A / Q235B / Q235C / Q235D) and plate supplied to GB/T 3274 Q235. Yield on Q235 is 235 MPa for thin plate, close to A573 Grade 58’s 220 MPa. GB/T 700 Q255 (withdrawn in many lists, still searched) is another historical comparison. GB/T 700 Q275 and GB/T 1591 Q345 sit above Grade 58 and line up better with A573 Grade 65 / Grade 70, not this page. Chinese vessel plate GB/T 713 Q245R is a pressure-vessel book, not an A573 substitute.

Dual marking is possible only when both books are fully met.

Buyers pick A573 Gr.58 when a tank or structural file wants C-Mn-Si plate with improved notch toughness and the 58–71 ksi tensile band. Search phrases such as A573GR58, A573 Grade 58, A573-58 and SA573 Gr.58 all point here.

It is not a substitute for A572 Gr.50. That grade is Nb-V HSLA. It is not a substitute for EN 10025-2 S355JR. That grade lines up with A573 Grade 65 / 70, not Grade 58.

A573 Grade 58 is killed C-Mn-Si structural plate. Treat welding as production welding for tanks and structures.

Qualify to the applicable tank or structural code. Consumables must match a carbon-manganese family. A procedure written for ASTM A36 steel plate is the usual comparison, but it is not automatically qualified for A573. A procedure written for EN 10025-2 S235JR is a European structural procedure, not A573. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A573 Gr.58 is as-rolled or normalized when the purchase order asks for it. A573 does not require quench and temper.

If the tank specification asks for Charpy, write the temperature and joules. The certificate lists ASTM A573 Grade 58; heat number; heat analysis; tensile to the Grade 58 table; delivery condition. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Do not print SA-573 as if it were a Section II vessel spec.

Width and length follow A6 mill practice unless a tighter extra is written. Flatness follows A6. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A573GR58 unless the order says so.

Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation if impact is required.

Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.

A573 Grade 58 is the plate for a file that wants A573 toughness plate at the 58 ksi tensile band, not thicker than 40 mm. It is the wrong plate for HSLA frames that name A572 Gr.50. It is the wrong plate for S355 work that names EN 10025-2 S355JR.
