ASTM A283 Grade C Steel Plate | A283 Gr.C Structural Steel Plate

ASTM A283 Grade C is the commercial grade in ASTM A283/A283M. The specification covers low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plates for general structural and engineering use. It is not a pressure-vessel specification. If the drawing says A285 or SA285, this is the wrong page. As Direct Mill Supply by SHH STEEL, the plate is produced to ASTM A283/A283M.

The same plate is written A283 Gr.C, A283GRC, A283 GR C, A283C, A283 Grade C, ASME SA283 Grade C, SA283 Gr.C, SA283GRC and A/SA283 Grade C. They all mean Grade C. ASME SA-283/SA-283M is the companion when a Code stamp path is required.

Do not mix this page with ASTM A285 or ASME SA285. Those are pressure-vessel carbon plates. Do not mix it with ASME SA516 or ASTM A516. Those are fine-grain vessel plates. ASTM A283 Grade C is a mild carbon structural plate. It is also not A572. A572 is HSLA.

Grade C is the grade most buyers search. Grade D is stronger. Grade B and Grade A are softer. If the drawing says A283 Gr.C, do not ship Grade D and call it close enough.

Usual delivery is as-rolled. Killed steel, copper-bearing plate, normalizing or impact testing is supplementary. Write those extras on the purchase order.

Dual marking ASTM A283 Grade C / ASME SA283 Grade C is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

This plate belongs to the Carbon Steel Plates family. It is not Pressure Vessel Steel Plates unless the drawing actually names a vessel specification.

Chemistry for ASTM A283 Grade C is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASTM A283/A283M.

Product Analysis — A283 Gr.C / SA283 Grade C

Silicon is not a forced killed-steel minimum in the base Grade C table. If the drawing wants killed plate, specify silicon or aluminum on the mill order. Copper-bearing A283 Gr.C is a separate order item for better atmospheric corrosion resistance.

A Grade D heat cannot be recertified as Grade C if carbon or tensile results sit outside the Grade C table. If the drawing says ASTM A283 Grade C or A283C, the ladle and the tensile test must sit in Grade C. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and adds product analysis when required.

Tensile Requirements — ASTM A283 Grade C per ASTM A283/A283M

Grade A is weaker. Grade B is mid. Grade C is the common structural window. Grade D is 415–550 MPa with 230 MPa yield. If the drawing says A283 Gr.C, do not ship Grade D as a silent upgrade.

Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness is not a default requirement. Charpy impact is not a default line in A283. If the project needs a test temperature and energy, write it as a supplementary requirement.

Order ASTM A283 Grade C when the drawing names Grade C. If the job is a Section VIII vessel, the buyer usually needs A285 or A516, not A283. If the job is structural and the drawing says A36, do not substitute A283GRC without a written revision. Yield of A36 is higher than A283 Gr.C.

ASTM A283 Grade C is selected for base plates, gussets, tanks that are not Code-stamped to a vessel specification, frames, and general fabricated structures. It is mild carbon steel. It is not weathering steel, not QT high-strength plate, and not cryogenic nickel plate.

Allowable design values come from the project specification or building code, not from a mill flyer.

ASTM A283GRC welds with ordinary carbon-steel practice.

Procedures follow AWS D1.1 on structural work, or ASME Section IX if the plate is used on a Code item that actually accepts SA283. Low-hydrogen consumables such as E7018 (AWS A5.1) are the usual shop choice. Preheat depends on thickness, restraint and hydrogen.

Do not copy an A517 QT or A387 Cr-Mo procedure onto ASTM A283 Grade C. Procedure review can go through steel welding services. The fabricator owns the WPS.

Standard delivery of ASTM A283 Grade C is as-rolled.

Normalizing or stress relieving is supplementary. If the drawing says “normalized A283 Gr.C”, that cycle is ordered and recorded. SHH STEEL reports the actual delivery condition on the MTC.

Usual delivery is as-rolled structural plate. Normalized or stress-relieved plate is supplied when specified.

The certificate lists ASTM A283 Grade C and, when dual certified, ASME SA283 Grade C; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; delivery condition; and supplementary tests.

Surface is mill finish or shot-blasted. Shop primer is available.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

• Thickness: 6 mm – 100 mm
• Width: up to about 4000 mm
• Length: up to about 12000 mm

Cut-to-length plates and nest sizes are available through steel cutting services.

Dimensional limits follow ASTM A6 / mill plate tolerances unless the order cites another table. Flatness, width, length and thickness deviation should be stated on the RFQ when they are tighter than mill standard.

Ultrasonic testing is supplementary on A283. It is not automatic.

Most export ASTM A283 Grade C orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.

Copper-bearing plate. Cu 0.20% min when atmospheric corrosion resistance is wanted.

Killed steel. Silicon or aluminum as specified.

Heat treatment. Normalize or stress relieve as specified.

Charpy impact. Temperature, energy and specimen orientation as agreed.

NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578 when written.

Restricted chemistry. Tighter P, S or residuals.

Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 or named inspection agency.

These tests run through steel testing service. If an item is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed.
