ASTM A573 Grade 70 Steel Plate | A573 Gr.70 Storage Tank Plate supplier
What is ASTM A573 Grade 70 Steel?
ASTM A573 Grade 70, also searched as A573 Gr.70, A573GR70, A573GR.70, A573-70, A573 Grade 70 [485] and sometimes SA573 Gr.70, is the highest strength grade in ASTM A573/A573M. That book covers structural carbon-manganese-silicon plates in three tensile ranges, written for atmospheric-temperature service where improved notch toughness matters. The usual job is storage tanks. This page is not Grade 58 or Grade 65. This page is not ASTM A36. A36 is a different structural book. This page is not ASTM A516 Grade 70. A516 is pressure-vessel plate under A20 / SA-20. This page is not A387 Cr-Mo.
Tensile is 70–90 ksi / 485–620 MPa. Yield is 42 ksi / 290 MPa min. Maximum thickness in A573 is 1.5 in [40 mm]. The steel is fully killed and made to fine-grain practice. General requirements follow ASTM A6 / A6M, not A20. There is no official ASME SA-573 vessel specification. Inquiries that write SA573 Gr.70 or SA573GR70 are still buying ASTM A573 Grade 70. SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the certificate against A573 and A6, and ship it to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.

This plate sits in structural steel plates. HSLA sisters belong on ASTM A572. Vessel carbon sisters belong on ASTM A516, not here.
Chemical Composition
Heat analysis follows ASTM A573 Table 1 for Grade 70. Carbon is thickness-dependent. Product analysis, when ordered, follows A6 product-analysis tolerances.
Heat Analysis — ASTM A573 Grade 70
| Element | ≤ 13 mm (½ in) | > 13 mm to 40 mm |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.27 | 0.28 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.85 – 1.20 | 0.85 – 1.20 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.030 | 0.030 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 | 0.030 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.15 – 0.40 | 0.15 – 0.40 |
| Aluminum (total), min | 0.020 | 0.020 |
A573 allows manganese above the listed max when carbon is reduced: each 0.01% C below the listed max may raise Mn by 0.06%, up to 1.60% Mn on Grade 70. The aluminum minimum does not apply to plates 380 mm wide and under. Do not treat this chemistry as ASTM A36 or as A516 Gr.70. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search A573 Gr.70 mechanical properties, A573GR70 yield and A573 Grade 70 tensile.
Tensile and Yield — ASTM A573 Grade 70
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 70–90 ksi / 485–620 MPa |
| Yield point, min | 42 ksi / 290 MPa |
| Elongation in 8 in. [200 mm], min | 18% |
| Elongation in 2 in. [50 mm], min | 21% |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
For plates wider than 24 in [600 mm], A573 reduces the elongation requirement by two percentage points. Elongation need not be determined for floor plate. Grade 65 is 450–530 MPa with 240 MPa yield. Grade 58 is 400–490 MPa with 220 MPa yield. Do not quote those numbers on a Grade 70 order.

Equivalent Material Grades
There is no official one-to-one worldwide swap for A573 Gr.70. What buyers compare is a 485 MPa structural / tank plate in other books, not an automatic substitute.
In the United States the governing name is ASTM A573 Grade 70. Some inquiries write SA573 Gr.70. That is a market label. ASME has not issued a standalone SA-573 vessel specification. Do not dual-mark A573 as SA-516 or SA-387.
In Europe there is no daily EN 10025 twin written as A573. S355 structural plate is a market comparison only, not a substitute. See EN 10025-2.
In China buyers sometimes compare Q345 or tank plate families. That is a conversation, not a certificate swap.
| Designation | Country / region | Standard | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A573 Gr.70 / A573GR70 | USA | ASTM A573 | Name on this page |
| SA573 Gr.70 (inquiry spelling) | Market | — | Not an official SA book |
| ASTM A573 Grade 65 | USA | A573 | Lower tensile sister |
| ASTM A573 Grade 58 | USA | A573 | Lowest tensile sister |
| ASTM A36 | USA | A36 | Structural carbon, not A573 |
| ASTM A516 Grade 70 | USA | A516 | Vessel plate, not tank A573 |

Dual marking is possible only when both books are fully met.
Storage Tank and Atmospheric Toughness Service
Buyers pick A573 Gr.70 when a tank or structural file wants C-Mn-Si plate with improved notch toughness at atmospheric temperature and the 70–90 ksi tensile band. Search phrases such as A573GR70, A573 Grade 70, A573-70 and SA573 Gr.70 all point here.
It is not a substitute for ASTM A516 Grade 70. That grade is written for welded pressure vessels under A20 / SA-20 and is not limited to 40 mm. It is not a substitute for ASTM A572 Grade 50. That grade is Nb-V HSLA.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
A573 Grade 70 is killed C-Mn-Si structural plate. Treat welding as production welding for tanks and structures.
Qualify to the applicable code or tank standard. Consumables must match a carbon-manganese family. A procedure written for ASTM A36 may be close in alloy type but is not automatically qualified for Grade 70 tensile. A procedure written for ASTM A516 Grade 70 is a vessel procedure, not an A573 procedure. Preheat and interpass must stay inside the qualified WPS. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A573 Gr.70 is as-rolled or normalized when the purchase order asks for it. A573 does not require quench and temper. It is not a Cr-Mo vessel heat-treatment book.
If the tank specification asks for Charpy, write the temperature and joules. A573 is written around improved toughness, but the purchase order still has to name the test.
The certificate lists ASTM A573 Grade 70; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the Grade 70 table; delivery condition. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Do not print SA-573 as if it were a Section II vessel spec.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A573 Gr.70 storage tank plate:
- Thickness: 6 mm – 40 mm (A573 maximum is 1.5 in / 40 mm)
- Width: 1500 mm – 3000 mm, wider by mill agreement inside A6
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Do not inquire 60 mm, 80 mm or 100 mm as A573 Grade 70. That thickness is outside the book. Thicker carbon tank or vessel work belongs on ASTM A516 or carbon steel plates under a different specification.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for ASTM A573 Grade 70 follow ASTM A6 / A6M unless the purchase order names another table. Do not apply pressure-vessel A20 / SA-20 extras unless the order writes them.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for A573 Gr.70 (A6 reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Usual minus (mm) | Usual plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 10 | −0.4 | +0.8 |
| 10 – 16 | −0.5 | +0.9 |
| 16 – 25 | −0.6 | +1.0 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
Width and length follow A6 mill practice unless a tighter extra is written. Flatness follows A6 unless a tighter class is named. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. If the tank calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus on the RFQ. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A573GR70 unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
ASTM A573 Grade 70 already defines chemistry and the 70–90 ksi tensile table. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order. SHH STEEL will not assume them from the grade name alone.
Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation if impact is required.
Normalized delivery. Write it when the tank file wants N instead of as-rolled.
Product analysis. Especially C, Mn, P and S.
Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when the plate will be welded in the thickness direction.
NDE. A6 ultrasonic extras as named. Write scanning extent and acceptance class.
Hardness. Only if the destination file caps HB.
Identification and stamping. Heat number, grade A573 Grade 70 / A573 Gr.70, thickness and mill logo on each plate.
Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| Storage tanks | A573 Gr.70 / A573GR70 shells and courses |
| Atmospheric tanks | A573 Grade 70 plate from SHH STEEL |
| Structural tank farms | A573-70 floors and walls |
| Comparison vs vessel plate | A573GR70 next to ASTM A516 Grade 70 |
A573 Grade 70 is the plate for a file that wants A573 toughness plate at the 70 ksi tensile band, not thicker than 40 mm. It is the wrong plate for ASME Section VIII vessel design that names SA-516. That work is ASTM A516 Grade 70. It is the wrong plate for HSLA structural frames that name A572. That work sits on ASTM A572.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: keep A573 on the certificate, keep thickness at 40 mm or under, and do not relabel it as A516 or SA-573. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices A573 Gr.70 from first-line mills, reports Grade 70 chemistry and tensile, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. A573GR70 is not A573 Gr.65. A573 Grade 70 is not ASTM A36. A573 Gr.70 is not ASTM A516 Grade 70. If the drawing says SA-516 or 80 mm thick, we will not ship A573 and call 70 close.
