CCS F36 / FH36 (CCS F36 / FH36) shipbuilding steel plate — overview

Technical Reviewer: Jack | SHH STEEL Material Solutions Department · Updated: 2026-10-27

Arctic and polar service under CCS often calls for CCS F36 / FH36 (CCS F36 / FH36): higher-strength hull plate with −60 °C toughness and the tighter FH chemistry column of UR W11. Write F36 / FH36 on the PO; do not drop the letter or the dual form. Strength level 36 means minimum yield 355 N/mm², tensile 490–630 N/mm² and elongation 21 % min. (A5). The letter FH (short F) fixes Charpy V-notch testing at −60 °C. GB 712 Grade FH36 covers the same chemistry/tensile band as a Chinese product standard; CCS class work still needs the CCS F36 / FH36 stamp, not GB 712 alone. In commercial enquiries it is called CCS F36 / FH36 or CCS F36 / FH36 shipbuilding steel plate.

Equivalent grades: CCS F36 / FH36 ≈ ASTM A131 Grade FH36 ≈ ABS FH36 ≈ DNV NV F36 ≈ LR FH36 ≈ BV FH36 ≈ NK KF36 ≈ KR RF36 ≈ RINA FH36 ≈ GB 712 Grade FH36 (all class-approved, stamped by the issuing society).

CCS F36 / FH36 is selected when scantlings need the higher yield of the 36 band and the material class assigns −60 °C toughness. Ordinary-strength CCS Grade A–E stay at 235 N/mm² yield and cannot replace F36/FH36 without a drawing change. Within the 36 band, letter choice is toughness: A/AH 0 °C → D/DH −20 °C → E/EH −40 °C → F/FH −60 °C; within the FH letter, strength steps 32 → 36 → 40 raise yield from 315 to 355 to 390 N/mm².

Plates that pass mill tests under CCS survey are die-stamped or stencilled CCS F36, CCS FH36 or CCS F36 / FH36 (plus Z or U where through-thickness or ultrasonic requirements apply) and are supplied with a mill certificate the CCS Surveyor endorses. SHH STEEL supplies CCS F36 / FH36 from Chinese mills that hold CCS works approval for the grade, from stock in common sizes or from a mill rolling cycle, with CCS survey arranged at the mill.

Product (check) analysis column: CCS Rules for Materials and Welding specify heat (ladle) limits; no numeric product-analysis tolerance is tabulated in the rule text reviewed, so product (check) limits are agreed on the order or taken from the approved mill specification and certificate.

Source: IACS UR W11 higher-strength chemistry tables (ladle samples) — the chemistry China Classification Society applies to CCS F36 / FH36 via CCS Rules for Materials. The same alloy set appears in GB 712 for Grade FH36; CCS survey is what turns the plate into class steel. AH/DH/EH share one chemistry column; FH is tighter on C, P, S and adds N control with higher Ni allowance. Toughness is differentiated by impact temperature and supply routes, not by separate C/Mn caps within AH/DH/EH. Product (check) analysis numeric tolerances are not tabulated in UR W11; when required, agree tolerances at enquiry. TMCP steels must also meet the applicable Ceq / Pcm limits on the mill approval — ask for Ceq on the certificate.

Energies rise with thickness — a 60 mm plate must meet higher values than a 20 mm plate at the same −60 °C. Condition of supply and impact lot size depend on grain-refining practice and thickness (AR/CR/N/TM/QT as permitted). For TMCP F36/FH36, respect Ceq caps ≈ 0.38 % (t≤50) / 0.40 % (50

Thickness tolerance and surface condition

China Classification Society applies IACS UR W13 thickness tolerances unless the PO states otherwise (often 0.3 mm minus class — confirm on PO; see UNCERTAIN). Plus/flatness/width/length per agreed standard (ASTM A6, EN 10029 or GB/T 709). Surface quality per EN 10163 or equivalent accepted by CCS; state primer/surface class on receipt if needed.

Quantities are approximate and change daily (indicative — confirm before booking); all stock plates carry CCS F36 / FH36 marking and CCS-endorsed mill certificates when sold as CCS class plate. Sizes outside the table (for example 3000 mm width, 60–100 mm thickness, or fixed lengths for a cutting plan) are produced in the next mill rolling cycle, typically 3–6 weeks including CCS survey. Send your size list and we will reply with what is in stock and what must be rolled.

Packing. Plates are bundled by size with steel strapping, marked with heat number, grade and CCS stamp, and shipped in containers (up to about 11.8 m) or break bulk for longer plates.

CCS CCS F36 / FH36 vs other CCS hull grades

Pick F36/FH36 when the drawing specifies higher-strength grade FH36 (or the dual commercial form F36 / FH36). Do not substitute ordinary Grade A/B unless the designer recalculates scantlings — yield differs (355 vs 235). Within the 36 band, letter choice is toughness: A/AH 0 °C → D/DH −20 °C → E/EH −40 °C → F/FH −60 °C. Within the FH letter, strength steps 32 → 36 → 40 raise yield from 315 to 355 to 390 N/mm².

For yields above 390 N/mm² China Classification Society / IACS move to extra-high strength (UR W16 naming — CCS uses AH420…FH690 with H, matching DNV-style W16 names, not BV’s A420 form).

When CCS CCS F36 / FH36 is the right choice: typical uses are low-temperature service: Arctic and polar-class hulls, ice belts and offshore units in cold regions where −60 °C toughness is specified. The Charpy temperature (−60 °C) is fixed by the letter, and the strength by the number (ReH 355 N/mm²). Pick the strength from the scantling calculation and the letter from the material class and design temperature on the approved drawing.

Applications, cutting and welding of CCS CCS F36 / FH36

Typical uses: low-temperature service: Arctic and polar-class hulls, ice belts and offshore units in cold regions where −60 °C toughness is specified; weight-saving vs ordinary-strength plate in large tankers, bulkers and container ships built to CCS class. See offshore platform steel plates when primary offshore grades apply.

Welding: higher-strength hull steels need approved higher-strength consumables matched to −60 °C weld-metal toughness; preheat and heat input follow the approved WPS and often track Ceq/Pcm from the mill certificate. TMCP F36/FH36 must respect the Ceq caps noted above. Cutting by oxy-fuel/plasma/laser is routine; thick FH plate may need hydrogen control — follow mill recommendations.

Processing notes for CCS F36 / FH36: cold forming is routine within normal shipyard radii. Line heating and fairing of TMCP plate should stay within the temperature limits recommended by the mill, because overheating can reduce the strength gained in controlled rolling. Check the delivery condition on the certificate before planning hot forming.

Certificates, CCS survey and third-party inspection

Every plate is tested and marked at the mill under China Classification Society survey; the mill certificate lists heat number, ladle chemistry, Ceq where applicable, tensile results (ReH ≥ 355 N/mm², Rm 490–630 N/mm², A ≥ 21 %), Charpy at −60 °C, delivery condition and plate numbers, endorsed by the Surveyor. Optional EN 10204 3.2, UT (U), Z-direction, multi-class with ABS/DNV/LR/BV.

On receipt: verify CCS F36 / FH36 (or CCS F36 / CCS FH36) stamp, −60 °C impact data, energies for the delivered thickness band, thickness within UR W13 / PO tolerance, CCS endorsement present — not a GB 712-only stamp.

Charpy acceptance for CCS F36 / FH36 by thickness (IACS UR W11; actual results as per standard and mill certificate):

Thickness t (mm)Test temperatureAverage energy, longitudinal (J min.)Average energy, transverse (J min.)
t ≤ 50−60 °C3424
50 < t ≤ 70−60 °C4127
70 < t ≤ 100−60 °C5034

If UT or 3.2 was ordered, check the UT report and inspector’s plate list as well.

Common mistakes when ordering CCS F36 / FH36 (CCS F36 / FH36)

  • Ordering “CCS 36” without the letter (FH/…) — toughness class missing
  • Writing only F36 or only FH36 without clarifying CCS class — use dual F36 / FH36 or CCS F36 / FH36 on the PO
  • Accepting ordinary-strength Grade A/B certificates for a F36/FH36 PO
  • Accepting GB 712 Grade FH36 alone without CCS Surveyor endorsement
  • Ignoring TMCP Ceq caps on TM plate
  • FH chemistry (tighter P/S, N) not checked when the PO says FH
  • Coil-cut plate without coil approval
  • Missing CCS endorsement on the MTC
  • Writing DNV NV F36 or LR/FH36 on a CCS-class PO without arranging that society’s survey

Write dual grade (F36 / FH36), delivery condition, impact temperature and certificate type into the PO.

FAQ

What sizes and minimum order quantity can you supply for CCS F36 / FH36 (CCS F36 / FH36) plate?
IACS UR W11 lists FH36 plate primarily up to 100 mm; thicker plate needs special CCS consideration. Most enquiries we receive for F36/FH36 are 8–60 mm thick, 1800–3000 mm wide and 6000–12000 mm long. Popular sizes can come from China stock carrying the CCS F36 / FH36 marking, with no fixed minimum. A mill rolling for a special width, thickness above roughly 60 mm or a Z-grade normally needs a minimum quantity per size, which we confirm per order. We can combine several sizes, or F36/FH36 with other hull grades, to reach a rolling or container quantity.
How is CCS CCS F36 / FH36 certified, and can you arrange EN 10204 3.2 or dual-class with ABS/DNV/LR/BV?
Every plate is made by a CCS-approved mill under China Classification Society survey. It is die-stamped or stencilled CCS F36 / FH36 / CCS F36 / FH36 with the heat or plate number, and the mill test certificate is endorsed by the CCS Surveyor. The certificate gives the ladle chemistry, the tensile results (ReH ≥ 355 N/mm², Rm 490–620 N/mm², A ≥ 21 %), the Charpy results at −60 °C, the delivery condition and the plate identity. A GB 712 Grade FH36 certificate alone is not CCS class approval. If your contract asks for EN 10204 3.2, we arrange it before rolling. Dual or multi-class (CCS + ABS, DNV, LR or BV) must be booked before testing. 3.2 cannot be added after testing, so please state it on the enquiry.
What is the impact test temperature and energy for CCS F36 / FH36, and do thickness limits apply?
CCS F36 / FH36 is tested at −60 °C. Required average energies (longitudinal/transverse, J min.) under IACS UR W11 rise with thickness: ≤50 mm 34/24; 50–70 mm 41/27; 70–100 mm 50/34. This matters when you order thick F36/FH36: a 60 mm plate must meet higher values than a 20 mm plate at the same −60 °C. The test lot size and the permitted delivery condition (AR, CR, N, TM or QT) follow the UR W11 / CCS Materials supply table. Above 100 mm, agree data positions and energies with CCS. Results are as per standard and mill certificate.
What welding and preheat guidance applies to CCS CCS F36 / FH36?
CCS F36 / FH36 needs higher-strength welding consumables approved for −60 °C weld-metal toughness. For TMCP plate, Ceq is commonly capped near 0.38 % (t ≤ 50 mm) and 0.40 % (50 < t ≤ 100 mm) under UR W11 practice; above 100 mm it is agreed at mill approval. N or AR plate of the same grade may have a higher actual Ceq, so the delivery condition affects how easy the plate is to weld. Preheat, interpass temperature and heat input must follow your CCS-approved WPS. We send the mill certificate’s ladle analysis and Ceq before shipment so the welding engineer can confirm the procedure qualifies. We do not give generic preheat temperatures.
What is the delivery time for CCS CCS F36 / FH36 plate?
Stock sizes of CCS F36 / FH36 can usually be cut, inspected and loaded in about 7–15 days. Mill-rolled orders typically take about 3–6 weeks plus inspection, depending on thickness, delivery condition and the mill schedule. These are commercial estimates, confirmed with each quote. If 3.2 witness or multi-class survey is required, we book the inspector when we place the mill order so testing is not delayed. A dedicated coordinator sends weekly progress photos until the bill of lading is issued.
Which payment terms do you accept for CCS F36 / FH36, and how is my deposit protected?
We accept T/T or L/C at sight. With T/T, the usual terms are a 30 % deposit and the balance against the documents or after inspection. You or your inspector can check the CCS F36 / FH36 stamping, the dimensions and the Surveyor-endorsed certificate before you pay the balance. With L/C, payment is tied to the presented documents. For first orders we can start with a smaller trial lot. The proforma invoice shows the grade (CCS F36 / FH36 / CCS F36 / FH36), sizes and certificate type.
Why does CCS write both F36 and FH36, and what are the equivalent grades among class societies and GB 712?
China Classification Society and Chinese mill practice use both the short form F36 and the long form FH36 for the same higher-strength grade; our title and stamp lead with the dual CCS F36 / FH36. CCS F36 / FH36 corresponds to ASTM A131/A131M Grade FH36, ABS FH36, DNV NV F36, LR FH36 / LR/FH36, BV FH36, NK KF36, KR RF36, RINA Grade FH36 (confirm RINA designation per rules), and GB 712 Grade FH36. All share yield 355 N/mm², tensile 490–620 N/mm² and a Charpy test at −60 °C under IACS UR W11. Even so, a plate is only accepted by the society whose stamp and certificate it carries. Order CCS F36 / FH36 for CCS class, or ask for multi-class when one stock must serve several projects. GB 712 or A131 certificates alone do not replace the CCS F36 / FH36 stamp.
Can you cut, bevel or machine CCS CCS F36 / FH36 plates, and how are they packed for export?
Yes. In our workshop we can flame, plasma or laser cut F36/FH36 to drawings, bevel weld edges (V, X or K preparation to your angle and land), drill and machine. Every cut piece keeps traceability: we transfer the CCS F36 / FH36 marking and heat number before cutting, and the cutting list is tied to the mill certificate. For export, plates are bundled with steel straps and timber spacers, marked with grade, size and heat number, and loaded in containers or as break-bulk. Shot blasting and shop primer are available on request. See SHH STEEL for our processing capabilities.

Conclusion

CCS F36 / FH36 / CCS F36 / FH36 is higher-strength hull steel under China Classification Society Rules for Materials and IACS UR W11: yield 355 N/mm², tensile 490–630 N/mm², Charpy at −60 °C, marking CCS F36 / FH36. Both commercial forms F36 and FH36 name the same grade. GB 712 Grade FH36 is the related product standard — not a substitute for the CCS stamp. Lock on the order: delivery condition, impact lot size, TMCP Ceq if TM, product analysis if needed, multi-class and 3.2.

SHH STEEL supplies CCS F36 / FH36 plate rolled by Chinese mills that hold China Classification Society works approval for the grade, so every plate carries the CCS F36 / FH36 stamp and a Surveyor-endorsed certificate traceable to its heat. Common thicknesses are available from stock; other sizes are scheduled into the mill rolling cycle with CCS survey arranged at the mill. On request we add EN 10204 3.2 certificates with third-party witness (TÜV, SGS, LR or another agency) and joint certification with ABS, DNV, LR, BV, NK, KR or RINA.

We accept T/T or L/C payment, with inspection before the balance is paid. Small quantities in several sizes, or CCS F36 / FH36 mixed with CCS Grade A/B/D/E or other A–FH sizes, can be combined in one container. A dedicated coordinator sends production and shipping updates with photos, and our own workshop cuts to size, bevels, drills and machines plates before shipment so they arrive ready for fabrication.

Request a quotation: send SHH STEEL the grade (CCS F36 / FH36 / CCS F36 / FH36), thickness, width, length, quantity per size and destination port, plus any multi-class, Z/U or 3.2 certificate requirement. We reply with price, available stock and lead time.
