ASTM A514 Grade R Steel Plate | A514 Gr.R 100ksi QT Structural Plate supplier
What is ASTM A514 Grade R Steel?
ASTM A514 Grade R, also searched as A514 Gr.R, A514GRR, A514-R, A514R and 100 ksi QT plate, is a historical grade from earlier editions of ASTM A514/A514M. Older tables listed Grade R with a maximum thickness of 2½ in / 65 mm. Current A514/A514M-18 / -22 Table 1 lists only A, B, E, F, H, P, Q and S. Grade R is not on that current table.
A purchase order that still writes Grade R is usually an old boom drawing, a spare-part list, or a mill spec that was never revised. SHH STEEL will not silently recertify it as current Grade F or Grade S. Current Grade F is a 65 mm nickel-copper grade. Current Grade S is a 65 mm manganese-niobium grade with no nickel. Historical Grade R is a nickel-bearing mid-thickness grade. Those heats are not the same steel.
There is no ASME SA-514 / SA-514M book in current Section II, Part A. Inquiries that write SA514 Gr.R are still talking about historical ASTM A514 Grade R. Code quenched-and-tempered vessel plate belongs on ASTM A517, not on an old A514 letter.
This page is not current Grade F. This page is not current Grade S. This page is not current Grade H. This page is not current Grade Q. This page is not A572 Gr.50. This page is not EN 10025-6 S690QL. This page is not GB/T 16270 Q690E.
On the old table, yield to 65 mm is 100 ksi / 690 MPa min and tensile is 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa. Elongation is 18% in 2 in. Hardness on plate to 20 mm is 235–293 HBW. Delivery is quenched and tempered. General requirements follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6.
SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We source historical Grade R when the order writes that chemistry, print heat analysis and product analysis when ordered, record QT on the certificate, and ship plate to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. If the drawing is 80 mm, we will not roll Grade R and call 100 ksi enough.

Chemical Composition
Old-table Grade R is a nickel-bearing mid-thickness grade. Values below follow earlier A514 chemistry tables used by mills for historical Grade R. Current Table 1 does not reprint this column.
Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — historical ASTM A514 Grade R
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.15 – 0.20 | 0.13 – 0.23 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.85 – 1.15 | 0.80 – 1.21 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 | 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.035 | 0.040 |

| Boron (B) | 0.0005 – 0.005 | 0.0004 – 0.006 |
Current Grade F uses 0.70–1.00% Ni plus copper and more molybdenum. Current Grade S has no nickel. Historical Grade R sits between those two ideas and stops at 65 mm. Do not stamp Grade R chemistry as Grade F or Grade S unless the purchase order allows the swap. If product analysis is on the purchase order, SHH STEEL prints both columns on the certificate. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search A514 Gr.R mechanical properties, A514GRR yield, A514 R 100 ksi and historical A514 Grade R tensile.
Tensile, Yield and Hardness — historical ASTM A514 Grade R
| Thickness | Yield min | Tensile | Elongation in 2 in, min | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To 20 mm (¾ in) incl. | 100 ksi / 690 MPa | 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa | 18% | 235–293 HBW |
| Over 20 to 65 mm (2½ in) | 100 ksi / 690 MPa | 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa | 18% | — |
The old table did not give Grade R a 65–150 mm row. That row belongs only to current Grade Q, Grade E and Grade P. If the RFQ is 80 mm and the name is Grade R, the mill cannot certify historical A514 Grade R. Move that inquiry to current Grade Q or Grade E after the purchase order is revised.
A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa yield. ASTM A36 steel plate is 250 MPa yield. Neither is A514.

Equivalent Material Grades
Historical Grade R has no official current twin. What buyers compare is the 690 MPa QT structural idea in the 65 mm nickel band.
In the United States the current official names are A, B, E, F, H, P, Q and S. Grade R is a search name from earlier books. Market shops still say T-1. T-1 is a product name, not the ASTM grade. ASTM A517 vessel grades are not A514. Do not dual-mark historical Grade R as A517 unless both books are fully met for that Code year.
In Europe the usual comparison is EN 10025-6 S690Q or EN 10025-6 S690QL. See EN 10025-6. Dual marking only when both books are met.
In China the nearest QT comparison is GB/T 16270 Q690D / Q690E. That book is high-yield quenched-and-tempered structural plate. Q690E adds a −40 °C impact table. GB/T 1591 Q690C / Q690D / Q690E is a different book and is not automatically QT A514. GB chemistry does not copy the historical Grade R nickel window. Dual marking only when both books are fully met. Do not treat Q345B or Q355B as A514.

100 ksi QT Structural Service
Buyers pick A514 Gr.R when an old boom, trailer frame, mining attachment or spare-part list still prints Grade R. Search phrases such as A514GRR, A514 Grade R, A514-R and historical A514 Grade R all point here.
SHH STEEL will ask two questions before rolling: does the file need the historical nickel heat, or can it move to current Grade F or Grade S? We will not invent a current Table 1 stamp that says Grade R. We will not ship 80 mm plate as Grade R. We will not treat Grade R as a vessel grade.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia when the legacy file still names it.
Weldability
Historical A514 Grade R is killed QT alloy structural plate at 690 MPa yield with about 1% nickel. Treat welding as production welding. Heat input, preheat and interpass have to stay inside a written WPS.
Qualify to the applicable structural code. Consumables must match a 100 ksi QT family. A procedure written for current Grade S may not cover the nickel window. A procedure written for A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa HSLA, not A514. Do not overheat the plate and then call it still Grade R. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A514 Gr.R is quenched and tempered.
A514 does not supply Grade R as-rolled or normalized only. If the mill skipped quench and temper, the plate cannot be certified as historical A514 Grade R.
If the job wants Charpy, write the temperature and joules. A514 does not automatically include impact. Extra 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists ASTM A514 Grade R as a historical grade when that is what the order writes; heat number; heat analysis and product analysis when ordered; tensile to the 65 mm table; QT delivery. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. The quote will also state that current Table 1 does not list Grade R.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for historical A514 Gr.R 100 ksi QT structural plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 65 mm (old-table max 2½ in)
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Do not order Grade R for 80 mm or 100 mm. Those thicknesses belong to current Grade Q, Grade E or Grade P after the purchase order is revised. Browse more sizes on the products index.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for historical ASTM A514 Grade R follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6 unless the purchase order names another table. Do not apply pressure-vessel A20 extras unless the order writes them.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for A514 Gr.R (A6 / SA-6 reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Usual minus (mm) | Usual plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 16 | −0.4 | +0.8 |
| 16 – 25 | −0.5 | +0.9 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.6 | +1.0 |
| 40 – 65 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows A6 / SA-6 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A514GRR unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
Historical Grade R already defines chemistry, QT and the 100 ksi table inside 65 mm. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.
Book year. Write the old A514 edition if the file depends on that table.
Historical name. Write ASTM A514 Grade R. State on the quote that current Table 1 does not list Grade R.
Thickness check. Confirm the ordered thickness is ≤ 65 mm before the heat is planned as Grade R.
Product analysis. Write it if the file needs the second chemistry column, especially Ni, Cr, Mo, V and B.
Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation.
Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.
NDE. A6 ultrasonic extras as named.
Hardness. The book already gives 235–293 HBW on plate to 20 mm.
Identification and stamping. Heat number, A514 Grade R, thickness and mill logo.
Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| Legacy crane and boom | A514 Gr.R / A514GRR mid-thickness chords |
| Old trailer drawings | Grade R frames from SHH STEEL |
| Replacement parts | Historical 65 mm nickel 100 ksi QT |
| Current alternative | Move to Grade F or Grade S if the PO allows |
| Comparison vs Q690E | A514GRR next to GB/T 16270 Q690E |
| Comparison vs S690 | A514GRR next to EN 10025-6 S690QL |
Historical A514 Grade R is the plate for a file that still wants 100 ksi QT structural plate inside 65 mm with the old nickel chemistry. It is the wrong plate for 150 mm chords. That work is current Grade Q or Grade E. It is the wrong plate for a pressure vessel that names SA-517. That work sits on ASTM A517. It is the wrong plate for ordinary carbon frames. That work sits on ASTM A36 steel plate or structural steel plates.
Supply Capability
SHH STEEL sources historical ASTM A514 Grade R from first-line Chinese mills when the order writes that chemistry, and ships it on worldwide terms. Partner mills include Wuyang (Wugang), Angang, Shougang, Hanye, Anyang Iron & Steel, Baosteel, Xinyu, Xingcheng, Yongjin, Tsingshan, TISCO (Taiyuan), Jiuquan (JISCO), Lianzhong, Zhangpu and Baoxin, plus other qualified mills when the size or QT route requires it.
Mill test certificates are issued to EN 10204 3.1 as standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when the order names a third-party hold point.

Global Delivery & Markets
SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner with mill partnerships in China. We supply ASTM, ASME, EN, DIN, JIS and GB steel to buyers in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. Origin is mill-direct, China origin.
SHH STEEL has supplied steel plates to the USA, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, El Salvador, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, India, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan and Korea.
Typical lead time: ex-stock 5–7 days; standard rolling / QT about 45–60 days; 3.2 inspection about 2 months. Historical grades can take the longer mill window because the heat is not a daily current-table program.
Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: say it is historical, keep the 65 mm cap, print product analysis when ordered, and do not pretend current Table 1 still lists Grade R. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) will either roll the old nickel chemistry or offer current Grade F / Grade S when the purchase order allows the move.
We keep the book on the order. A514GRR is not current Grade F just because both stop at 65 mm. A514 Grade R is not Grade Q at 80 mm. A514 Grade R is not ASTM A517 Grade F. A514 Grade R is not GB/T 16270 Q690E unless both books are met. If the drawing says 100 mm A514, we will move the inquiry to current Grade Q or Grade E instead of forcing Grade R.
FAQ
- What is A514 Grade R steel plate?
- ASTM A514 Grade R, also searched as A514 Gr.R, A514GRR and A514-R, is a historical 100 ksi QT structural grade from earlier A514 tables. Maximum thickness is 65 mm. Chemistry is nickel-bearing. Current A514/A514M Table 1 no longer lists Grade R. SHH STEEL still sources it when the old drawing names it.
- Is Grade R still in the current ASTM book?
- No. Current Table 1 lists A, B, E, F, H, P, Q and S only.
- Can SHH STEEL replace Grade R with Grade F or Grade S?
- Only if the purchase order allows it. Grade F is the current 65 mm nickel-copper sister. Grade S is the current 65 mm grade with no nickel. Neither copies Grade R chemistry automatically.
- What is the Chinese equivalent of A514 Grade R?
- The nearest QT comparison is GB/T 16270 Q690D or Q690E. It is a strength comparison, not an automatic plate substitute. GB/T 1591 Q690E is a different book.
- What is the maximum thickness for A514 Grade R?
- 65 mm on the old table. Thicker plate must move to a current grade such as Grade Q, Grade E or Grade P.
- Is there ASME SA-514 Grade R?
- No. There is no SA-514 book in current Section II.
Conclusion
ASTM A514 Grade R Steel Plate is a historical 100 ksi QT structural grade from earlier A514 tables, limited to 65 mm, with 690 MPa yield and 760–895 MPa tensile. Current A514/A514M Table 1 does not list Grade R. Whether the inquiry says ASTM A514 Grade R, A514 Gr.R, A514GRR, A514-R or historical A514 Grade R, SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) will confirm the old nickel chemistry, print heat and product analysis as ordered, record QT delivery, and issue EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.
SHH STEEL supplies historical ASTM A514 Grade R / A514 Gr.R 100ksi QT Structural Plate for replacement and legacy files that still name this grade and stay inside 65 mm.
