ASTM A514 Grade A Steel Plate | A514 Gr.A 100ksi QT Structural Plate

ASTM A514 Grade A, also searched as A514 Gr.A, A514GRA, A514-A, A514A, T-1 Grade A and 100 ksi QT plate, is the zirconium-bearing thin-plate grade in ASTM A514/A514M. That book covers quenched-and-tempered alloy structural plates intended primarily for welded bridges and other structures. Maximum thickness for Grade A is 1¼ in / 32 mm. General requirements follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6, not A20 / SA-20.

There is no ASME SA-514 / SA-514M book in current Section II, Part A. Inquiries that write SA514 Gr.A are still buying ASTM A514 Grade A. Code quenched-and-tempered vessel plate is ASTM A517 Grade A, not A514.

This page is not Grade B. Grade B also stops at 32 mm, but Grade B uses vanadium and titanium instead of zirconium and uses a lower silicon window. This page is not Grade Q. Grade Q goes to 150 mm. This page is not A572 Gr.50. This page is not EN 10025-6 S690QL. This page is not GB/T 16270 Q690E. Q690E is a Chinese QT comparison, not an automatic A514 certificate.

To 32 mm, yield is 100 ksi / 690 MPa min and tensile is 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa. Elongation is 18% in 2 in. Hardness on plate to 20 mm is 235–293 HBW. Grade A has no 90 ksi row because the grade itself stops at 32 mm. Delivery is quenched and tempered. Grade A chemistry carries higher silicon, chromium, molybdenum, zirconium and boron. It does not require nickel or vanadium.

Grade A is less common in current mill programs than Grade B or Grade Q. Many new files that once named Grade A now name Grade B inside 32 mm. SHH STEEL still sources Grade A when the purchase order writes that chemistry.

Thicker A514 sisters belong on Grade Q, Grade E and Grade P. The other 32 mm sister is Grade B. QT vessel sisters belong on ASTM A517 Grade A. European 690 MPa QT sisters belong on EN 10025-6 S690Q and EN 10025-6 S690QL.

Grade A is the Cr-Mo-Zr-B member limited to 32 mm. Silicon is higher than on Grade B. Zirconium is the first check against Grade B. Heat analysis is the mill table. Product analysis, when ordered, follows ASTM A6 / SA-6 product-analysis tolerances.

Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — ASTM A514 Grade A

Grade B uses 0.20–0.35% Si, 0.03–0.08% V and 0.01–0.10% Ti, with no zirconium window. If zirconium is missing, the heat is not Grade A. Do not accept a B heat on a Grade A order just because both stop at 32 mm. If product analysis is on the purchase order, SHH STEEL prints both columns on the certificate. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.

Buyers search A514 Gr.A mechanical properties, A514GRA yield, A514 A 100 ksi and T-1 Grade A tensile.

Tensile, Yield and Hardness — ASTM A514 Grade A

Grade A does not have a 65–150 mm row. That row belongs to Grade Q, Grade E and Grade P. If the RFQ is 40 mm and the name is Grade A, the mill cannot certify A514 Grade A. Move that inquiry to Grade H, Grade F or Grade Q.

A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa yield. ASTM A36 steel plate is 250 MPa yield. Neither is A514.

There is no official one-to-one worldwide swap for A514 Gr.A. What buyers compare is the 690 MPa QT structural idea in the 32 mm band.

In the United States the official plate name is ASTM A514 Grade A. Market shops still say T-1. T-1 is a product name, not the ASTM grade. ASTM A517 Grade A is the vessel QT cousin under A20. Do not dual-mark A514 as A517 unless both books are fully met.

In Europe the usual comparison is EN 10025-6 S690Q or EN 10025-6 S690QL. See EN 10025-6. Dual marking only when both books are met.

In China the nearest QT comparison is GB/T 16270 Q690D / Q690E. That book is high-yield quenched-and-tempered structural plate. Q690E adds a −40 °C impact table. GB/T 1591 Q690C / Q690D / Q690E is a different book and is not automatically QT A514. GB chemistry does not copy the Grade A zirconium window. Dual marking only when both books are fully met. Do not treat Q345B or Q355B as A514.

Buyers pick A514 Gr.A when a legacy drawing still names Grade A chemistry inside 32 mm. Search phrases such as A514GRA, A514 Grade A, A514-A, T-1 Grade A and Q690E all point here when the file is actually A514.

Many new 32 mm files now name Grade B instead. SHH STEEL will not swap A to B unless the purchase order allows it. It is the wrong plate for 80 mm chords. That work is Grade Q or Grade E. It is the wrong plate for a Section VIII vessel that names SA-517. That work is ASTM A517 Grade A.

A514 Grade A is killed QT alloy structural plate at 690 MPa yield with zirconium and higher silicon. Treat welding as production welding. Heat input, preheat and interpass have to stay inside a written WPS.

Qualify to the applicable structural code. Consumables must match a 100 ksi QT family. A procedure written for Grade B may not cover the zirconium-silicon window. A procedure written for A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa HSLA, not A514. Do not overheat the plate and then call it still Grade A. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A514 Gr.A is quenched and tempered.

A514 does not supply Grade A as-rolled or normalized only. If the mill skipped quench and temper, the plate cannot be certified A514 Grade A.

If the job wants Charpy, write the temperature and joules. A514 does not automatically include impact. Extra 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists ASTM A514 Grade A; heat number; heat analysis and product analysis when ordered; tensile to the 32 mm table; QT delivery. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Dimensional limits for ASTM A514 Grade A follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6 unless the purchase order names another table.

Typical thickness tolerance idea for A514 Gr.A (A6 / SA-6 reference)

Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows A6 / SA-6 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A514GRA unless the order says so.

A514 Grade A already defines chemistry, QT and the 100 ksi table inside 32 mm. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.

Book name. Write ASTM A514 Grade A. If the inquiry said SA514, state on the PO that the mill will certify A514.

Thickness check. Confirm the ordered thickness is ≤ 32 mm before the heat is planned as Grade A.

Product analysis. Write it if the file needs the second chemistry column, especially Zr.

Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation.

Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.

NDE. A6 ultrasonic extras as named.

Hardness. The book already gives 235–293 HBW on plate to 20 mm.

Identification and stamping. Heat number, A514 Grade A, thickness and mill logo.

Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named.

A514 Grade A is the plate for a file that still wants 100 ksi QT structural plate inside 32 mm with zirconium chemistry. It is the wrong plate for 150 mm chords. That work is Grade Q or Grade E. It is the wrong plate for a pressure vessel that names SA-517. That work sits on ASTM A517 Grade A. It is the wrong plate for ordinary carbon frames. That work sits on ASTM A36 steel plate or structural steel plates.
