ASTM A514 Grade E Steel Plate | A514 Gr.E 100ksi QT Structural Plate
What is ASTM A514 Grade E Steel?
ASTM A514 Grade E, also searched as A514 Gr.E, A514GRE, A514-E, A514E, T-1 Grade E and 100 ksi QT plate, is the high-chromium thick-plate grade in ASTM A514/A514M. That book covers quenched-and-tempered alloy structural plates intended primarily for welded bridges and other structures. Maximum thickness for Grade E is 6 in / 150 mm. General requirements follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6, not A20 / SA-20.
There is no ASME SA-514 / SA-514M book in current Section II, Part A. Inquiries that write SA514 Gr.E are still buying ASTM A514 Grade E. Code quenched-and-tempered vessel plate is ASTM A517 Grade E, not A514.
This page is not Grade B. Grade B stops at 32 mm and uses 0.40–0.65% Cr. This page is not Grade Q. Grade Q uses 1.20–1.50% Ni and 1.00–1.50% Cr. Grade E uses 1.40–2.00% Cr, molybdenum, titanium and boron, and does not require nickel. This page is not A572 Gr.50. This page is not EN 10025-6 S690QL.
To 2½ in / 65 mm, yield is 100 ksi / 690 MPa min and tensile is 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa. Over 2½ in to 6 in / 65–150 mm, yield drops to 90 ksi / 620 MPa min and tensile is 100–130 ksi / 690–895 MPa. Delivery is quenched and tempered.
SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We buy this grade from qualified Chinese mills, check the 1.40–2.00% Cr window plus Mo-Ti-B, record QT on the certificate, and ship plate to fabricators in the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.

Other 150 mm A514 sisters are Grade Q and Grade P. QT vessel sisters belong on ASTM A517 Grade E and ASME SA517 Grade E. European 690 MPa QT sisters belong on EN 10025-6 S690Q and EN 10025-6 S690QL.
Chemical Composition
Grade E is the high-chromium member of A514. Heat analysis is the mill table. Product analysis, when ordered, follows A6 product-analysis tolerances.
Heat Analysis — ASTM A514 Grade E
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.12 – 0.20 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.40 – 0.70 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.030 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.030 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.20 – 0.40 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 1.40 – 2.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.40 – 0.60 |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.01 – 0.10 |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.20 – 0.40 |
| Boron (B) | 0.001 – 0.005 |
Nickel is not required on Grade E. Grade Q needs 1.20–1.50% Ni. Grade B uses only 0.40–0.65% Cr and stops at 32 mm. If chromium is under 1.40%, the heat is not Grade E. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search A514 Gr.E mechanical properties, A514GRE yield, A514 E 100 ksi and T-1 Grade E tensile.
Tensile, Yield and Hardness — ASTM A514 Grade E
| Thickness | Yield min | Tensile | Elongation in 2 in, min | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To 20 mm (¾ in) incl. | 100 ksi / 690 MPa | 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa | 18% | 235–293 HBW |
| Over 20 to 65 mm (2½ in) incl. | 100 ksi / 690 MPa | 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa | 18% | — |
| Over 65 to 150 mm (6 in) | 90 ksi / 620 MPa | 100–130 ksi / 690–895 MPa | 16% | — |
Do not quote 690 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Over 65 mm the book already drops to 620 MPa. Grade B cannot use this third row because Grade B stops at 32 mm.
A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa yield. ASTM A36 steel plate is 250 MPa yield. Neither is A514.

Equivalent Material Grades
There is no official one-to-one worldwide swap for A514 Gr.E. What buyers compare is the 690 MPa QT structural idea with high chromium.
In the United States the official plate name is ASTM A514 Grade E. Market shops still say T-1. T-1 is a product name, not the ASTM grade. ASTM A517 Grade E is the vessel QT cousin under A20. Do not dual-mark A514 as A517 unless both books are fully met.
In Europe the usual comparison is EN 10025-6 S690Q or EN 10025-6 S690QL. See EN 10025-6. Dual marking only when both books are met.
In China there is no daily GB/T 1591 twin that copies Grade E chemistry. Q690 market plate is a strength comparison, not an automatic A514 Gr.E certificate.

100 ksi QT Structural Service
Buyers pick A514 Gr.E when a boom, mining chassis or bridge member wants 100 ksi yield, plate up to 150 mm, and the high-chromium A514 chemistry. Search phrases such as A514GRE, A514 Grade E, A514-E, T-1 Grade E and 100 ksi QT plate all point here.
It is the wrong plate for a file that named Grade Q chemistry. That work is Grade Q. It is the wrong plate for 25 mm parts that named Grade B. That work is Grade B. It is the wrong plate for a Section VIII vessel that names SA-517. That work is ASTM A517 Grade E.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
A514 Grade E is killed QT alloy structural plate at 690 MPa yield with 1.40–2.00% Cr. Treat welding as production welding. Heat input, preheat and interpass have to stay inside a written WPS.
Qualify to the applicable structural code. Consumables must match a 100 ksi QT family. A procedure written for Grade B may not cover the higher chromium. A procedure written for A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa HSLA, not A514. Do not overheat the plate and then call it still Grade E. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A514 Gr.E is quenched and tempered.
A514 does not supply Grade E as-rolled or normalized only. If the mill skipped quench and temper, the plate cannot be certified A514 Grade E.
If the job wants Charpy, write the temperature and joules. A514 does not automatically include impact. Bridge, crane and cold-region files often add CVN on Grade E. Extra 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists ASTM A514 Grade E; heat number; heat analysis including Cr, Mo, Ti and B; tensile to the thickness table; QT delivery. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A514 Gr.E 100 ksi QT structural plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm (Grade E max 6 in)
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Grade B cannot cover this full band. Grade F stops at 65 mm. Grade Q is the other common 150 mm choice when the file wants nickel. Browse more sizes on the products index.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for ASTM A514 Grade E follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6 unless the purchase order names another table.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for A514 Gr.E (A6 / SA-6 reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Usual minus (mm) | Usual plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 16 | −0.4 | +0.8 |
| 16 – 25 | −0.5 | +0.9 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.6 | +1.0 |
| 40 – 80 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
| 80 – 150 | −1.2 | +2.0 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows A6 / SA-6 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A514GRE unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
A514 Grade E already defines chemistry, QT and the thickness-dependent 100/90 ksi table. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.
Book name. Write ASTM A514 Grade E. If the inquiry said SA514, state on the PO that the mill will certify A514.
Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation. Cold-region files often name this on Grade E.
Product analysis. Especially C, Cr, Mo, Ti, B, P and S.
Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.
NDE. A6 ultrasonic extras as named.
Hardness. The book already gives 235–293 HBW on plate to 20 mm.
Identification and stamping. Heat number, A514 Grade E, thickness and mill logo.
Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named.
Applications
| Industry | Typical components |
|---|---|
| Crane and boom | A514 Gr.E / A514GRE chords |
| Mining and earthmoving | Grade E frames from SHH STEEL |
| Cold-region structures | 100 ksi QT plate with CVN |
| Comparison vs Grade Q | A514GRE next to A514 Grade Q |
| Comparison vs S690 | A514GRE next to EN 10025-6 S690QL |
| Not for Code vessels | Use ASTM A517 Grade E instead |
A514 Grade E is the plate for a file that wants 100 ksi QT structural plate up to 150 mm with the high-chromium A514 chemistry. It is the wrong plate for a pressure vessel that names SA-517. That work sits on ASTM A517 Grade E. It is the wrong plate for ordinary carbon frames. That work sits on ASTM A36 steel plate or structural steel plates.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: print A514 Grade E, keep the 1.40–2.00% Cr window, keep QT on the certificate, and do not invent SA-514. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices A514GRE from first-line mills, reports Cr-Mo-Ti-B chemistry, records the 100/90 ksi thickness table, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the book on the order. A514GRE is not Grade B at 80 mm. A514 Grade E is not Grade Q just because both go to 150 mm. A514 Grade E is not ASTM A517 Grade E. If the drawing says Grade Q chemistry, we will not ship Grade E and call 100 ksi enough.
