EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5 Steel Plate | X12CrMo5 5Cr-0.5Mo Vessel Plate
General Description
X12CrMo5 is the 5Cr-0.5Mo grade in EN 10028-2. Buyers search EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5, X12CrMo5 steel plate, 1.7362, X12CrMo5 equivalent and X12CrMo5 5Cr-0.5Mo vessel plate. Steel number is 1.7362. Chromium is about 4.00–6.00%. Molybdenum is about 0.45–0.65%. That chromium step is why this page is not 13CrMo4-5 and not 10CrMo9-10.
Yield is in the 280 MPa class at ≤16 mm. Tensile is 480–630 MPa. Delivery is usually normalized and tempered (+NT). SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) supplying this grade to the USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
Do not ship 13CrMo4-5 against an X12CrMo5 drawing. 13CrMo4-5 is 1.25Cr-0.5Mo. Do not ship 10CrMo9-10 and call 2.25Cr the same as 5Cr. The closest ASME comparison is SA387 Grade 5 Class 1 or SA387 Grade 5 Class 2. Dual marking is possible only when chemistry, tensile, impact and delivery all fit.
Company scope: global exporter SHH STEEL.

Chemical Composition
Cast analysis follows EN 10028-2 Table 1. Product analysis follows EN 10028-1 when ordered. Google queries such as X12CrMo5 chemical composition and 1.7362 chemistry should be answered from this table, not from a Grade 12 or Grade 22 table.
Cast Analysis and Product Analysis — EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5 (1.7362)
| Element | Cast Analysis (%) | Product Analysis, when ordered (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.10 – 0.15 | 0.08 – 0.17 |
| Silicon (Si), max | 0.50 | 0.55 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.30 – 0.60 | 0.25 – 0.68 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.025 | 0.030 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.010 | 0.013 |
| Nitrogen (N), max | 0.012 | 0.014 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 4.00 – 6.00 | 3.90 – 6.10 |
| Copper (Cu), max | 0.30 | 0.35 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.45 – 0.65 | 0.42 – 0.70 |
| Nickel (Ni), max | 0.30 | 0.35 |
Chromium at 4.00–6.00% is the grade. Molybdenum stays in the 0.5Mo family. This is not 9Cr P91 and not 2.25Cr-1Mo. SHH STEEL reports cast analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.75–7.80 g/cm³. Use the mill certificate weight for vessel calculation if the file is tight.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search X12CrMo5 mechanical properties, X12CrMo5 yield strength and 1.7362 tensile. Room-temperature values fall with thickness.
Tensile and Yield — EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5
| Thickness (mm) | Yield min (MPa) | Tensile (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 16 | 280 | 480 – 630 |
| 16 – 40 | 270 | 480 – 630 |
| 40 – 60 | 260 | 470 – 620 |
| 60 – 100 | 240 | 460 – 610 |
| Density | 7.75–7.80 g/cm³ | 7.75–7.80 g/cm³ |
Elongation is typically 18–20% min on thinner plate. Impact at 0 °C, 27 J, is the usual option when the order names it. ASME SA-387 Grade 5 Class 1 and Class 2 use different tensile bands. Do not mix class numbers on the same certificate without writing both books.
Do not quote 280 MPa yield on an 80 mm plate. Do not treat 480–630 MPa tensile as permission to stamp SA387 Grade 5 Class 2 without checking class and PWHT.

5Cr-0.5Mo Pressure-Vessel Service
Buyers pick X12CrMo5 when the PED file wants 5% chromium and about 0.5% molybdenum. That alloy is used on high-temperature equipment that needs more chromium than Grade 12 and does not need 9Cr P91. Search phrases such as X12CrMo5 boiler plate, 1.7362 steel plate and X12CrMo5 pressure vessel plate all point here.
Do not ship SA387 Grade 12 Class 2 against X12CrMo5. That grade is 1.25Cr-0.5Mo. Do not ship SA387 Grade 91 Class 2. That grade is 9Cr. An ASME file that wants 5Cr-0.5Mo should name SA-387 Grade 5 on ASME SA387 and then write class and extras. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The purchase is not limited to China, Hong Kong or Singapore.
Weldability
X12CrMo5 is 5Cr-0.5Mo vessel plate. Treat welding as production welding, and as PED / ASME Code welding when the equipment is a vessel.
Qualify to the applicable code. ASME dual-name work uses ASME Section IX. Consumables must match 5Cr-0.5Mo practice. A carbon procedure written for SA516 Grade 70 is not valid. A 1.25Cr-0.5Mo procedure written for SA387 Grade 12 Class 2 is the previous family. A 2.25Cr-1Mo procedure written for SA387 Grade 22 Class 2 is a different chromium step. Preheat, interpass and PWHT follow thickness and hydrogen control. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is normalized and tempered EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5 (+NT). Buyers who search X12CrMo5 NT or X12CrMo5 heat treatment are asking for this route.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Test coupons then follow a simulated cycle. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5; 1.7362; heat number; cast analysis including chromium and molybdenum; product analysis when ordered; tensile to the correct thickness column; +NT; impact when ordered; elevated-temperature values when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for X12CrMo5 5Cr-0.5Mo vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 120 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 3500 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
2.25Cr-1Mo plate belongs on 12Cr2Mo1R steel plate. 1Cr-0.5Mo plate belongs on 15CrMoR steel plate. Carbon vessel plate belongs on Q345R steel plate.
Dimensional limits for EN 10028-2 X12CrMo5 follow EN 10028-1 together with EN 10029, unless the purchase order names another table. That sentence is not decoration. A 5Cr-0.5Mo vessel plate is still a flat product. If the drawing was written to ASME SA-20 / ASTM A6 thinking, write those tables on the order. Do not assume the mill will apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a PED plate.
Thickness tolerance is the item fabricators argue about first. EN 10029 Class A is the usual default for pressure-vessel plate when the order is silent. Class B, Class C and Class D exist for tighter or one-sided control. Class A is not the same as “mill extra on the plus side only.” If the vessel calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion allowance, say whether minus tolerance is allowed and how much. A 20 mm X12CrMo5 plate ordered Class A is not the same delivered plate as a 20 mm plate ordered with a restricted minus of 0.3 mm. Write the class next to the thickness.
Width and length tolerances also sit in EN 10029. Cut-to-length plate from a reversing mill does not hold the same edge as a sheared strip. If the nesting program needs +0 / −5 mm on length, that is an order line, not an email after rolling. Edge condition should be stated as mill edge or trimmed edge. Flame-cut edges on 5Cr-0.5Mo plate pick up a heat-affected rim. If the plate will be welded on that edge without a clean-up cut, say so before the mill burns the plate.
Flatness is the second argument. EN 10029 flatness classes are not the same as “looks flat on the truck.” Thick 5Cr-0.5Mo plate after normalizing and tempering can carry a light bow. If the job is CNC cutting of tube sheets or narrow rings, ask for a flatness class and for flattening after heat treatment. Do not wait until the plate is on the cutting bed in Houston or Rotterdam.
Out-of-square, camber and waviness should be named when the plate is going into a long shell course. A 12 000 mm plate that is 8 mm out of square wastes more time than the extra mill charge. If the order is silent, the mill ships the standard class. That is not a quality escape. It is the book.
Marking and stencilling tolerances matter on alloy plate. Heat number, grade X12CrMo5, steel number 1.7362, and +NT should stay readable after shot blast. If the destination file wants low-stress die stamp plus paint stencil, write both. Paint-only marking disappears in a blast booth.
For dual-name work against SA387 Grade 5 Class 2, do not mix EN 10029 Class A with SA-20 thickness extra without a sentence on the purchase order. SHH STEEL will follow the tighter of the two named tables when both are written. If only EN 10029 is written, EN 10029 governs.
Supplementary Requirements
Charpy details. Temperature, energy, location and orientation.
Product analysis. Add this when the destination file wants finished-plate chemistry, especially chromium and molybdenum.
Elevated-temperature proof strength. Add this when the calculation uses design temperature.
Simulated PWHT. When the equipment will be stress-relieved.
NDE. EN 10160 or the named UT class.
Third-party. EN 10204 3.2 when written.
