ASTM A514 Grade H, also searched as A514 Gr.H, A514GRH, A514-H, A514H, T-1 Grade H and 100 ksi QT plate, is the nickel-bearing grade limited to 2 in / 50 mm in ASTM A514/A514M. That book covers quenched-and-tempered alloy structural plates intended primarily for welded bridges and other structures. General requirements follow ASTM A6 / ASME SA-6, not A20 / SA-20.

There is no ASME SA-514 / SA-514M book in current Section II, Part A. Inquiries that write SA514 Gr.H are still buying ASTM A514 Grade H. Code quenched-and-tempered vessel plate is ASTM A517 Grade H, not A514.

This page is not Grade B. Grade B stops at 32 mm and has no nickel window. This page is not Grade F. Grade F goes to 65 mm with more nickel and copper. This page is not Grade Q. Grade Q goes to 150 mm. This page is not A572 Gr.50. This page is not EN 10025-6 S690QL. This page is not GB/T 16270 Q690E. Q690E is a Chinese QT comparison, not an automatic A514 certificate.

To 50 mm, yield is 100 ksi / 690 MPa min and tensile is 110–130 ksi / 760–895 MPa. Elongation is 18% in 2 in. Hardness on plate to 20 mm is 235–293 HBW. Grade H has no 90 ksi row because the grade itself stops at 50 mm. Delivery is quenched and tempered.

Grade H is the Ni-Cr-Mo-V-B member limited to 50 mm. Heat analysis is the mill table. Product analysis, when ordered, follows ASTM A6 / SA-6 product-analysis tolerances.

Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — ASTM A514 Grade H

Grade F uses 0.70–1.00% Ni plus copper and goes to 65 mm. Grade B has no nickel and stops at 32 mm. Grade Q uses 1.20–1.50% Ni and goes to 150 mm. If product analysis is on the purchase order, SHH STEEL prints both columns on the certificate. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.

Buyers search A514 Gr.H mechanical properties, A514GRH yield, A514 H 100 ksi and T-1 Grade H tensile.

Tensile, Yield and Hardness — ASTM A514 Grade H

Grade H does not have a 65–150 mm row. That row belongs to Grade Q, Grade E and Grade P. If the RFQ is 60 mm and the name is Grade H, the mill cannot certify A514 Grade H. Move that inquiry to Grade F (65 mm) or Grade Q / Grade E (150 mm).

A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa yield. ASTM A36 steel plate is 250 MPa yield. Neither is A514.

There is no official one-to-one worldwide swap for A514 Gr.H. What buyers compare is the 690 MPa QT structural idea in the 50 mm band.

In the United States the official plate name is ASTM A514 Grade H. Market shops still say T-1. T-1 is a product name, not the ASTM grade. ASTM A517 Grade H is the vessel QT cousin under A20. Do not dual-mark A514 as A517 unless both books are fully met.

In Europe the usual comparison is EN 10025-6 S690Q or EN 10025-6 S690QL. See EN 10025-6. Dual marking only when both books are met.

In China the nearest QT comparison is GB/T 16270 Q690D / Q690E. That book is high-yield quenched-and-tempered structural plate. Q690E adds a −40 °C impact table. GB/T 1591 Q690C / Q690D / Q690E is a different book (high-strength low-alloy structural steel) and is not automatically QT A514. GB/T 16270 Q690 chemistry does not copy the Grade H nickel-chromium window. Dual marking only when both books are fully met. Do not treat Q345B or Q355B as A514.

Buyers pick A514 Gr.H when a boom, trailer frame or mining attachment wants 100 ksi yield, nickel-bearing chemistry, and the plate stays inside 50 mm. Search phrases such as A514GRH, A514 Grade H, A514-H, T-1 Grade H and Q690E all point here when the file is actually A514.

It is the wrong plate for 80 mm or 150 mm chords. That work is Grade Q or Grade E. It is the wrong plate for a Section VIII vessel that names SA-517. That work is ASTM A517 Grade H. It is the wrong plate for a 345 MPa frame that names A572 Gr.50.

A514 Grade H is killed QT alloy structural plate at 690 MPa yield with nickel. Treat welding as production welding. Heat input, preheat and interpass have to stay inside a written WPS.

Qualify to the applicable structural code. Consumables must match a 100 ksi QT family. A procedure written for Grade B may not cover the nickel window. A procedure written for A572 Gr.50 is 345 MPa HSLA, not A514. Do not overheat the plate and then call it still Grade H. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A514 Gr.H is quenched and tempered.

A514 does not supply Grade H as-rolled or normalized only. If the mill skipped quench and temper, the plate cannot be certified A514 Grade H.

If the job wants Charpy, write the temperature and joules. A514 does not automatically include impact. Extra 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists ASTM A514 Grade H; heat number; heat analysis and product analysis when ordered; tensile to the 50 mm table; QT delivery. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows A6 / SA-6 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A514GRH unless the order says so.

A514 Grade H already defines chemistry, QT and the 100 ksi table inside 50 mm. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.

Book name. Write ASTM A514 Grade H. If the inquiry said SA514, state on the PO that the mill will certify A514.

Thickness check. Confirm the ordered thickness is ≤ 50 mm before the heat is planned as Grade H.

Product analysis. Write it if the file needs the second chemistry column.

Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation.

Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.

NDE. A6 ultrasonic extras as named.

Hardness. The book already gives 235–293 HBW on plate to 20 mm.

Identification and stamping. Heat number, A514 Grade H, thickness and mill logo.

Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named

A514 Grade H is the plate for a file that wants 100 ksi QT structural plate inside 50 mm. It is the wrong plate for 150 mm chords. That work is Grade Q or Grade E.
