ASTM A709 Grade 50W Steel Plate | A709 Gr.50W Weathering Bridge Steel
What is ASTM A709 Grade 50W Steel?
ASTM A709 Grade 50W, also searched as A709 Gr.50W, A709GR50W, A709-50W, A709 50W, ASTM A709 Gr.50W and A709 Grade 50W 50ksi, is the weathering 50 ksi grade in ASTM A709/A709M. That book covers structural steel for bridges. Grade 50W is the unpainted sister of Grade 50.
Grade 50W chemistry follows A588/A588M. Mills usually roll Type A or Type B, which match A588 Grade A and Grade B. A709 adds bridge rules: zone toughness for non-fracture-critical and fracture-critical members, identification, and the A709 50W stamp. A certificate that only says A588 Grade A or Grade B is not an A709 Grade 50W plate unless the purchase order also meets A709.
Do not treat 50W as A709 Grade 50. Grade 50 is painted A572-50 chemistry and has no mandatory copper-chromium patina. Do not treat 50W as HPS 50W or HPS 70W. Those are high-performance grades with their own chemistry and toughness. A709 says HPS 70W and HPS 100W shall not be substituted for 50W. Grade 50W shall not be substituted for Grade 36, Grade 50 or Grade 50S without agreement. Do not treat A709 as a pressure-vessel plate. That work sits on ASTM A516 or pressure vessel steel plates.
Buyers also type Corten, A588 and A242. Corten A and Corten B are trademark names. Dual mark only when both books are met. See weathering steel plates.
A709 Grade 50W develops a stable oxide film in wet-dry outdoor air. That is why shops leave girders and fascia unpainted. The A588 index rule still applies: G101 6.0 or higher on heat analysis when that extra is named. Indoor wet service, standing water and marine splash still need coating review.
General requirements follow A6/A6M. Fine-grain practice applies. Thickness in the A588 family goes to 8 in / 200 mm. To 100 mm the minimum yield is 50 ksi / 345 MPa and the minimum tensile is 70 ksi / 485 MPa. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.

Chemical Composition
Grade 50W chemistry follows A588 Type A or Type B. Heat analysis is the mill table. Product analysis, when ordered, follows A6 product tolerances on that heat.

Write Type A or Type B on the purchase order if the drawing cares. If the order is silent, SHH STEEL will quote the mill’s available type and print both heat and product columns when product analysis is named.
Do not treat this chemistry as A709 Grade 50. Grade 50 follows A572 Gr.50 and has no mandatory Cu-Cr window. Do not treat it as S355JR. S355JR is ordinary structural steel.
Mechanical Properties
Buyers search A709 Gr.50W mechanical properties, A709GR50W yield, A709 50W 50ksi and A709-50W tensile.
Tensile Properties — ASTM A709 Grade 50W plate
| Thickness | Tensile min | Yield min | Elongation 8 in min | Elongation 2 in min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ≤ 4 in / 100 mm | 70 ksi / 485 MPa | 50 ksi / 345 MPa | 18% | 21% |
| Over 4 in to 5 in / 100–125 mm | 67 ksi / 460 MPa | 46 ksi / 315 MPa | — | 21% |
| Over 5 in to 8 in / 125–200 mm | 63 ksi / 435 MPa | 42 ksi / 290 MPa | — | 21% |
Toughness is the A709 extra. Non-fracture-critical and fracture-critical members use different zone tables. Write the zone, the test temperature and whether the member is FCM. A silent A588 heat is not an FCM 50W plate.
Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Typical hardness after rolling sits around 130–180 HBW.

Equivalent Material Grades
There is no official one-to-one worldwide twin for A709 Gr.50W. What buyers compare is a 345 MPa weathering bridge plate.
In the United States the chemistry twin is A588 Grade A or Grade B. The painted twin inside A709 is Grade 50. HPS 50W is a different high-performance weathering plate. Corten A and Corten B are trademark names.
In Europe compare S355J2W, S355J0W and S355K2W. Phosphorus grades S355J0WP and S355J2WP are a different family. See EN 10025-5.
In China compare GB/T 4171 Q355GNH or Q355NH. Dual mark only when both books are fully met.

Weathering Bridge Service
Buyers pick A709 Gr.50W when a girder, fascia, tower or unpainted bridge frame wants 50 ksi yield, a patina and an A709 stamp. Search phrases such as A709GR50W, A709 Grade 50W, A709-50W and A709 50W 50ksi all point here.
It is the wrong plate for a painted A572-50 girder. That work is A709 Grade 50. It is the wrong plate for a 70 ksi HPS flange. That work is HPS 70W. It is the wrong plate for a pressure vessel. That work is A516 Grade 70. It is the wrong plate for stainless cladding. That work sits on stainless steel sheets and plates.
Unpainted 50W needs wet-dry cycles. Standing water, buried faces and constant spray do not form a stable film. SHH STEEL will say that on the quotation when the drawing shows a splash zone.
Weldability
ASTM A709 Grade 50W is weldable weathering HSLA plate. Treat welding as bridge production welding.
Typical consumables are matching weathering wires or E8018-C3 / E80C-G type electrodes qualified on a 50 ksi weathering family. If the fillet will be painted and the file allows it, some shops use E7018 and accept a color mismatch at the toe. A procedure written for A588 Grade A or Grade B is the usual starting point. A procedure written for A709 Grade 50 misses copper and chromium. A procedure written for S355JR is not a weathering procedure.
Preheat follows thickness and hydrogen control. After heavy cold forming, a stress relief may be required. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data, product analysis, CEV and the G101 index for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A709 Gr.50W is as-rolled. Normalize when the mill route or the purchase order asks for it.
A709 Grade 50W is not a QT grade. Do not order it as A514 or HPS 100W. Normalizing, when used, is typically 880–920 °C, soaked through, then air cooled. Fine-grain practice is part of manufacture.
The certificate lists ASTM A709 Grade 50W; Type A or Type B; heat number; heat analysis and product analysis when ordered; tensile by thickness band; impact zone when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. Dual mark to A588 Grade A or Grade B is common when both books are met.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A709 Gr.50W weathering bridge steel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 100 mm, heavier plate to 200 mm by enquiry
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Cut-to-size girders, flanges and fascia plates are available. Browse more sizes on weathering steel plates, structural steel plates and the products index.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for ASTM A709 Grade 50W follow A6 / A6M unless the purchase order names another table.
Typical A6 thickness tolerance idea for A709 Gr.50W
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Usual minus (mm) | Usual plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 10 | −0.3 | +0.8 |
| 10 – 20 | −0.4 | +0.9 |
| 20 – 30 | −0.4 | +1.0 |
| 30 – 40 | −0.5 | +1.1 |
| 40 – 50 | −0.5 | +1.2 |
| 50 – 80 | −0.6 | +1.4 |
| 80 – 100 | −0.8 | +1.6 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows A6 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A709GR50W unless the order says so.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: print A709 Grade 50W, keep Type A or Type B copper and chromium, and put the impact zone on the certificate when the bridge file asks for it. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) will not ship painted Grade 50 as 50W, will not drop copper to save alloy, and will not treat A709 as A36.
We keep the book on the order. A709GR50W is not A588 unless both books are met. A709 Grade 50W is not S355J2W unless both books are on the certificate. If the drawing is painted and does not need a patina, we will move the inquiry to Grade 50.
