What is ASTM A709 Grade 50CR Steel?

ASTM A709 Grade 50CR, also searched as A709 50CR, A709GR50CR, A709-50CR, A709 Gr.50CR, A1010 S41003 and A709 50CR 50ksi, is the stainless grade in ASTM A709/A709M. That book covers structural steel for bridges. 50CR is not Grade 50W. Grade 50W is Cu-Cr carbon weathering plate. 50CR is 12% chromium stainless plate built on A1010/A1010M, UNS S41003.

Yield is still 50 ksi / 345 MPa. Corrosion resistance comes from chromium, not from a carbon-steel patina. Shops use 50CR on unpainted bridges in chloride or industrial air where A588 / 50W patina is not enough. It is still a bridge plate under A709, so zone toughness, identification and the A709 stamp apply.

Do not treat 50CR as A572 Gr.50. Do not treat it as A709 Grade 50 or Grade 50W. Do not treat it as A240 Type 410 or A240 Type 410S unless both books are met. 410 / 410S are stainless sheet and plate books, not the bridge book. Do not treat A709 as a pressure-vessel plate. That work sits on ASTM A516 or pressure vessel steel plates.

A709 says HPS 70W and HPS 100W shall not be substituted for 50CR. 50CR shall not be substituted for Grade 36, Grade 50 or Grade 50S without agreement. SHH STEEL will not make that swap on a silent order.

General requirements follow A6/A6M plus the A1010 stainless route. Common plate thickness is 6 mm – 50 mm, heavier by enquiry. Density is about 7.70–7.75 g/cm³, not 7.85.

SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). We source A709 50CR / A1010 S41003 from first-line Chinese stainless mills, print heat and product analysis when ordered, record the impact zone when named, and ship plate to fabricators in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.

Chemical Composition

50CR chemistry follows A1010 / UNS S41003. Heat analysis is the mill table. Product analysis, when ordered, follows the product tolerances on that heat.

Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — ASTM A709 Grade 50CR (A1010 / S41003)

ElementHeat analysis (%)Product analysis (%)
Carbon (C), max0.0300.035
Manganese (Mn), max1.501.56
Phosphorus (P), max0.0400.045
Sulfur (S), max0.0300.035
Silicon (Si), max1.001.05
Chromium (Cr)10.50 – 12.5010.30 – 12.70
Nickel (Ni), max1.501.55
Nitrogen (N), max0.0300.035

Chromium is the corrosion element. Carbon stays low so the plate remains weldable. This is not A588 copper-chromium carbon steel. If the purchase order writes product analysis, SHH STEEL prints both columns.

Do not treat this chemistry as Grade 50W. 50W has no 10.5% chromium. Do not treat it as A240 Type 304. 304 is 18Cr-8Ni austenitic stainless. Do not treat it as S355JR.

Buyers search A709 50CR mechanical properties, A709GR50CR yield, A1010 S41003 50ksi and A709-50CR tensile.

Tensile Properties — ASTM A709 Grade 50CR plate

PropertyRequirement
Yield strength, min50 ksi / 345 MPa
Tensile strength, min65 ksi / 450 MPa
Elongation in 2 in. (50 mm), min18%

Usual 50 ksi name applies through common stainless plate thicknesses used on bridges. Thicker plate must follow the thickness note in the ordered A709 / A1010 year. Toughness is the A709 extra. Write non-FCM or FCM, zone and temperature.

Density is about 7.70–7.75 g/cm³. Typical hardness after mill processing sits above carbon 50W. Hardness is not the design value.

Equivalent Material Grades

There is no official one-to-one worldwide twin for A709 50CR. What buyers compare is a 345 MPa 12Cr stainless bridge plate.

In the United States the chemistry twin is A1010 / UNS S41003. Stainless sheet buyers also type 410S. Dual mark to A240 410S only when both books are met. Grade 50W and HPS 50W are carbon weathering grades, not 50CR.

In Europe shops compare 1.4003 / X2CrNi12 (EN 10088). That is a utility 12Cr stainless, not an automatic A709 stamp. In Japan compare SUS410L family. In China compare 022Cr12 / S41003 routes. Dual mark only when both books are fully met.

Stainless Bridge Service

Buyers pick A709 50CR when an unpainted bridge in chloride, de-icing salt or industrial air needs 50 ksi yield and chromium rather than a carbon patina. Search phrases such as A709GR50CR, A709 50CR, A1010 S41003 and A709-50CR all point here.

It is the wrong plate for a painted A572-50 girder. That work is A709 Grade 50. It is the wrong plate for ordinary Corten / 50W service inland. That work is Grade 50W. It is the wrong plate for an 18-8 tank jacket. That work sits on ASTM A240 A240M. It is the wrong plate for a pressure vessel. That work is A516 Grade 70.

SHH STEEL will ask whether the file wants 50W patina or 12Cr stainless before rolling.

Weldability

ASTM A709 Grade 50CR is weldable 12Cr stainless plate. Treat welding as stainless bridge production welding, not as A36 or 50W carbon practice.

Typical consumables are matching 12Cr wires or 309 / duplex-family wires qualified on an S41003 PQR. A procedure written for Grade 50W misses chromium and will not protect the HAZ color or corrosion. A procedure written for A240 Type 304 is a different family.

Preheat and interpass stay inside the approved WPS. After welding, a clean and passivate step is common on unpainted stainless faces. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data, product analysis and ferrite/hardness notes for that review.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for A709 50CR is annealed or mill-processed A1010 plate, then cut to size. Write the stainless finish on the purchase order: No.1 hot-rolled annealed and pickled is the usual bridge plate finish.

Do not order 50CR as QT A514 or as HPS 100W. Do not order it as BA coil unless the file is sheet.

The certificate lists ASTM A709 Grade 50CR and A1010 / UNS S41003 when dual-marked; heat number; heat analysis and product analysis when ordered; tensile to the 50 ksi table; impact zone when ordered. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Dimensions

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A709 50CR stainless bridge plate:

  • Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 50 mm, heavier plate by enquiry
  • Width: 1500 mm – 2500 mm
  • Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm

Cut-to-size fascia, rail and girder plate is available. Browse more sizes on stainless steel sheets and plates, structural steel plates and the products index.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits for ASTM A709 Grade 50CR follow A6 / A6M and the A1010 stainless thickness table unless the purchase order names another table.

Typical thickness tolerance idea for A709 50CR

Nominal thickness (mm)Usual minus (mm)Usual plus (mm)
6 – 8−0.30+0.50
8 – 10−0.30+0.60
10 – 16−0.40+0.70
16 – 25−0.50+0.80
25 – 40−0.60+1.00
40 – 50−0.70+1.10

Width on 1500–2500 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm. Flatness follows the stainless plate table unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A709GR50CR unless the order says so.

Supplementary Requirements

Grade 50CR already defines 12Cr chemistry and the 50 ksi table. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.

Why Choose SHH STEEL

SHH STEEL is a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin). For A709 Grade 50CR that means mill-direct stainless price, not a multi-layer stockist mark-up on a rare 12Cr bridge heat. We buy from first-line stainless mills that already roll S41003, so the unit price stays competitive and the heat can still carry the A709 impact zone.

Delivery is short when the size is in rolling range: ex-stock 5–7 days, standard heat about 35–45 days, 3.2 inspection about 45–60 days. Cutting, bevel and pickle can run in the same window. FOB Shanghai is the main term; CIF to US West, US Gulf, Rotterdam, Jebel Ali and Singapore is quoted on the same file.

Experience on this grade is simple: print A709 50CR and S41003, keep chromium 10.5–12.5%, and do not ship 50W or 410S sheet as 50CR bridge plate. We will not drop chromium to save alloy, will not stamp Corten as 50CR, and will not treat A709 as A36. If the drawing only needs inland 50 ksi weathering, we will move the inquiry to Grade 50W and keep the price on the right grade.
