ASTM A202 Grade B, also searched as A202 Gr.B, A202GRB, A202GR B, A202GR.B, A202-B and SA202 Grade B, is the higher-strength grade in ASTM A202/A202M. The book is chromium-manganese-silicon alloy plate for welded boilers and pressure vessels. This page is not A202 Grade A. Grade A is 515–655 MPa. This page is not ASME SA204 Grade B. Tensile is 85–110 ksi / 585–760 MPa. Yield is 47 ksi / 325 MPa min. Usual practice limits thickness to about 50 mm / 2 in. Delivery is normally as-rolled. ASTM A202/A202M was later withdrawn. For ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code work the name on the certificate should be SA-202 Grade B. If a drawing says A202 Grade A, we will not ship Grade B and call stronger automatically acceptable.

This plate sits in pressure vessel steel plates. Mo sisters belong on ASME SA204. Nickel sisters belong on ASME SA203. Carbon high-temp sisters belong on ASTM A515.

Heat Analysis and Product Analysis — ASTM A202 Grade B

Grade A and Grade B share the same Mn, Si and Cr windows. The difference on chemistry is carbon: Grade A is 0.17% max, Grade B is 0.25% max. This is not a 0.5Mo heat. If the file wants molybdenum, the book is ASME SA204 Grade B. SHH STEEL prints heat analysis on every certificate and product analysis when ordered. Density is 7.85 g/cm³.

Tensile and Yield — ASTM A202 Grade B

Do not quote 310 MPa yield on Grade B. That number belongs to Grade A. Do not treat 585–760 MPa as permission to stamp ASTM A515 Grade 70 or EN 10028-2 P295GH without checking both books.

Buyers pick A202 Gr.B when a drawing still names ASTM A202 Grade B. Search phrases such as A202GRB, A202GR B, A202GR.B and SA202 Grade B all point here.

It is not a substitute for ASME SA204 Grade B. That grade is molybdenum. It is not a substitute for ASME SA203 Grade B. That grade is nickel. For current ASME Code work, specify SA-202 Grade B. Dual marking is possible only when both books are met.

A202 Grade B is killed Cr-Mn-Si alloy vessel plate at 585–760 MPa. Treat welding as production welding, and as ASME Section VIII / PED welding when the equipment is a vessel.

Qualify to the applicable code. Consumables must match the 585–760 MPa band and the Cr-Mn-Si chemistry. A carbon procedure written for ASTM A516 Grade 70 is a comparison only. A Mo procedure written for ASME SA204 Grade C is the wrong family. Preheat and interpass must stay inside the qualified WPS. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.

Usual delivery from SHH STEEL is as-rolled ASTM A202 Grade B. The specification allows the plate to be ordered normalized, stress-relieved, or both.

This is not QT from EN 10028-6 P355Q. This is not the 50 mm normalizing rule from JIS G3103 carbon grades.

If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Simulated PWHT on test coupons is worth naming. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.

The certificate lists ASTM A202 Grade B and, when ordered, ASME SA-202 Grade B; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile; delivery condition. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A202 Gr.B Cr-Mn-Si vessel plate:

• Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 50 mm, thicker only by mill agreement
• Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
• Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm

Current practice in the specification normally limits thickness to about 2 in. [50 mm]. Mo plate belongs on ASME SA204 Grade B. Nickel plate belongs on ASME SA203 Grade B.

Dimensional limits for ASTM A202 Grade B follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20 unless the purchase order names another table. Do not apply ASTM A36 structural tolerances to a Cr-Mn-Si vessel plate without writing them.

Typical thickness tolerance idea for A202 Gr.B (A20 / SA-20 reference)

Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless the mill quote names a tighter extra. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows A20 / SA-20 unless a tighter class is written. Edge condition is mill edge or cut edge as ordered. If the vessel calculation used minimum thickness after corrosion, write the allowed minus on the RFQ. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on A202 Gr.B unless the order says so.

ASTM A202 Grade B already defines chemistry and tensile. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order. SHH STEEL will not assume them from the grade name alone.

Code name. Write SA-202 Grade B when the equipment is ASME Code work.

Heat treatment extras. Write normalized, stress-relieved, or both when as-rolled is not enough.

Charpy details. A202 Grade B does not assume a default impact temperature. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation if impact is required.

Simulated PWHT. When the vessel will be stress-relieved, name hold temperature, hold time and cooling rate on the coupon.

Product analysis. Especially C, Mn, Si and Cr. Grade B carbon must stay at 0.25% max.

Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when the plate will be welded in the thickness direction.

NDE. A20 / SA-20 ultrasonic extras, ASTM A435 or ASTM A578 as named. Write scanning extent and acceptance class.

Hardness. If the destination file caps hardness after rolling or after simulated PWHT, write the max HB and the test location.

HIC / SSC / NACE. Only when the equipment is sour service. A202 Grade B is not automatically NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156.

Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named. Hold points for chemistry, tensile and UT should be listed on the ITP.

Identification and stamping. Heat number, grade A202 Grade B / A202 Gr.B / A202GRB, SA-202 Grade B when ordered, thickness and mill logo on each plate.

A202 Grade B is the plate for a file that still names ASTM A202 at 585–760 MPa. It is the wrong plate for 0.5Mo service. That work is ASME SA204 Grade B. It is the wrong plate for nickel low-temp service. That work is ASME SA203 Grade B.
