What is ABS DH50 (ABS DQ51) shipbuilding steel plate?

Technical Reviewer: Jack | SHH STEEL Material Solutions Department · Updated: 2026-10-27

Equivalent grades: ABS DH50 / DQ51 ≈ ASTM A131 (no direct grade at this strength) ≈ DNV NV D500 ≈ LR DH50 ≈ BV D500 ≈ CCS DH500 ≈ NK KD500 ≈ KR RD51 ≈ RINA D500 ≈ GB 712 Grade DH500 (all class-approved, stamped by the issuing society).

Naming note: commercial and many yard enquiries use ABS DH50 for the ~500 N/mm² yield band. In ABS Rules Part 2, Section 2-1-8 Extra High Strength Steel, the official designation is DQ51 (category 51 = 500 N/mm² yield; letter DQ sets Charpy temperature). This page uses the title grade DH50 and states the ABS rule grade DQ51 wherever requirements are cited.

DQ51 provides minimum yield 500 N/mm², tensile 610–770 N/mm², elongation 16 % min., and Charpy at −20 °C with average energy 50 J longitudinal or 33 J transverse (2-1-8/5.11 Table 5A). It sits above the AH–FH 40 higher-strength family (2-1-3, max yield 390 N/mm²).

SHH STEEL sources Extra High Strength plate from mills with ABS approval for the grade, under Surveyor attendance. Related: ABS AH40 / ABS FH40 (higher-strength 40 band); live ABS Grade A; BV FH36 / BV FH40.

Category 51 (500 N/mm²) sits mid Extra High Strength. Vacuum degassing applies whenever thickness exceeds 50 mm, regardless of category.

Delivery condition and toughness for DQ51

Charpy temperature is fixed by the grade letter: DQ → −20 °C. Energy does not increase with thickness in Table 5A the way 2-1-3 Table 4 does — the listed 50 / 33 J applies, with mid-thickness rules for t > 100 mm (at least 2/3 energy or +10 °C test option).

Allowed delivery conditions and max thicknesses are in Table 3 (N, NR/CR, TM, QT). Vacuum degassing is mandatory when t > 50 mm and for category 70. State N / TM / QT on the PO; do not assume AR for Extra High Strength.

Thickness tolerance, UT and surface

Tolerances per 2-1-1/15 unless agreed otherwise (hull plates: 0.3 mm minus). Internal soundness: ultrasonic examination required for thickness ≥ 15 mm (EN10160 / ASTM A578 or agreed). Surface per EN 10163 or equivalent agreed with ABS. Edge discontinuities > 25 mm need investigation (2-1-8/9.1).

Quantities are approximate and change daily; all stock plates carry AB/DQ51 marking and ABS-endorsed mill certificates. Sizes outside the table are produced in the next mill rolling cycle, typically 3–6 weeks including ABS survey (as per standard and mill certificate for exact lead time). Send your size list and we will reply with stock vs roll.

Packing. Plates are bundled by size with steel strapping, marked with heat number, grade and ABS stamp, and shipped in containers (up to about 11.8 m) or break bulk for longer plates.

Extra High Strength DQ51 is less commonly stocked than AH36; many sizes are mill-roll only. Confirm available approved thicknesses with us before fixing the cutting plan.

Comparisons, not substitutions. Dual classification for Extra High Strength needs mills approved by each society for that strength level.

When to order DH50 / DQ51

Use Extra High Strength when design yield exceeds the 390 N/mm² of AH–FH 40. Category steps: 43→420, 47→460, 51→500, 56→550, 63→620, 70→690 N/mm². Letter AQ/DQ/EQ/FQ (commercial AH/DH/EH/FH) sets 0/−20/−40/−60 °C.

Do not substitute ABS FH40 for DH50 without design approval — yield and rule section differ (2-1-3 vs 2-1-8).

When ABS DH50 is the right choice: typical uses are higher-strength members that the material class table assigns to −20 °C, such as thicker deck and bottom strakes, sheer strakes and hatch coamings. The Charpy temperature (−20 °C) is fixed by the letter, and the strength by the number (ReH 500 N/mm²). Pick the strength from the scantling calculation and the letter from the material class and design temperature on the approved drawing. Swapping to a different letter or strength needs class approval of the drawing change, not just a new purchase order.

Applications and fabrication notes for DQ51

Typical uses: weight-critical hull and offshore members, MOU legs/racks/chords (order “R” designation when required), high-stress deck and bulkhead plating specified at 500 N/mm². See offshore platform steel plates.

Fabrication: welding and PWHT windows are narrower than for AH36; use WPS qualified for the strength level and follow mill Ceq/CET/Pcm and hydrogen-control guidance. Incorrect post-weld or flame-straightening heat can damage toughness (2-1-8/13). Parameters from weldability tests may be requested from the mill (2-1-8/15).

Project pattern for category 51: Typical projects: high-stress bulkhead plating, crane pedestal foundations on classed vessels, and selected MOU rack material. Compared with ABS AH36 / ABS FH40, this grade changes both rule section (2-1-8 vs 2-1-3) and yield.

Order checklist unique to DH50: write ABS DQ51 on the PO; Charpy −20 °C; yield 500 N/mm²; UT level for t≥15 mm; vacuum degassing if t>50 mm; delivery condition N/TM/QT; optional R suffix for MOU leg/rack/chord.

Processing notes for ABS DH50: DQ51 owes its strength to TM or QT processing. Hot forming or stress relieving above the tempering temperature can lower the properties, so any heat treatment after delivery must be agreed with the mill and ABS. Cold forming and bending radii should follow the mill’s data sheet.

Survey, UT and documentation

Surveyor witnesses mechanical tests and verifies process/NDE. Certificates include cast/batch/plate ID, grade, chemistry + Ceq/CET/Pcm, delivery condition with heat-treatment temperatures, mechanical results, surface and UT reports (2-1-8/23). Optional EN 10204 3.2 and multi-class.

Charpy acceptance for ABS DH50 by thickness (from 2-1-8; actual results as per standard and mill certificate):

Thickness t (mm)Test temperatureAverage energy, longitudinal (J min.)Average energy, transverse (J min.)
as per 2-1-8 Table 5A−20 °C5033

On receipt, check that the test temperature on the certificate is −20 °C and that the energy matches the band for the delivered thickness, not the thinnest band. Also check that the plate number on the stamp matches the certificate line, and that the ABS Surveyor endorsement is present. For thickness ≥ 15 mm, 2-1-8 requires ultrasonic examination; check the UT report and the agreed acceptance level. If the PO asked for 3.2, the inspector’s report must name the witnessed tests and plate numbers.

Common mistakes ordering ABS DH50

  • Using title DH50 on the PO without ABS grade DQ51 / 2-1-8 reference — mill may mis-route to 2-1-3
  • Assuming A131 / GB 712 automatically cover Extra High Strength
  • Omitting delivery condition (N/TM/QT) and UT class
  • Skipping vacuum-degassing / t>50 mm requirements
  • No “R” suffix when ordering MOU leg/rack/chord plate
  • Substituting FH40 for EHS without design change
  • How does ABS DH50 differ from ABS FH40?: FH40 is higher-strength 2-1-3 steel at 390 N/mm² yield and −60 °C. DH50 is Extra High Strength 2-1-8 (official DQ51) at 500 N/mm² and −20 °C. Chemistry, UT rules and vacuum-degassing requirements differ — do not substitute without design approval.

FAQ

What sizes and minimum order quantity can you supply for ABS DH50 plate?
ABS DH50 is ordered as ABS Extra High Strength grade DQ51 under 2-1-8. The plate is fully killed, and the maximum thickness depends on the delivery condition (TM or QT) under 2-1-8/3.3 Table 3. In practice DQ51 is nearly always produced by an approved mill to order rather than taken from stock, so a mill minimum per heat or rolling usually applies. Send thickness × width × length × quantity per size and we will say whether the order fits a scheduled rolling or needs its own heat. Small balance quantities can sometimes ride on another DQ51 order.
How is ABS DH50 certified, and can you arrange EN 10204 3.2 witness inspection?
Every plate is made by an ABS-approved mill under ABS survey. It is die-stamped or stencilled AB/DQ51 with the heat or plate number, and the mill test certificate is endorsed by the ABS Surveyor. The certificate gives the ladle chemistry, the tensile results (ReH ≥ 500 N/mm², Rm 610–770 N/mm², A ≥ 16 %), the Charpy results at −20 °C, the delivery condition and the plate identity. If your contract asks for EN 10204 3.2, we arrange it before rolling. The witness can be the ABS Surveyor, a second class society (dual or multi-class stamping, e.g. ABS + DNV or LR), or a third-party inspector such as SGS or BV who witnesses the tests and checks the markings. 3.2 cannot be added after the plates have been tested, so please state it on the enquiry.
What is the impact test temperature and energy for ABS DH50 (DQ51), and do thickness limits apply?
DQ51 is tested at −20 °C with an average of at least 50 J longitudinal or 33 J transverse (2-1-8 Table 5A). Impact specimens come from the quarter-thickness position (t/4). For plates thicker than 100 mm, ABS requires additional positions. Rule maximum thickness depends on whether the plate is TM or QT (2-1-8/3.3 Table 3), so give the delivery condition as well as the thickness, and we will check the approved mill’s range before quoting. Final values are as per standard and mill certificate.
What welding and preheat guidance applies to ABS DH50?
DQ51 is an extra high strength steel (yield ≥ 500 N/mm²) supplied TM or QT. Welding must follow a procedure qualified for this grade and approved by ABS. Under 2-1-8/4, Ceq is calculated from the ladle analysis and limited by Table 4B. For grades 47 and above, the mill may report CET, and for low-carbon TM/QT steel (C ≤ 0.12 %) it may report Pcm. Hydrogen control, preheat, interpass temperature and heat-input windows come from the approved WPS and the mill’s recommendations. Too much heat input can lower HAZ strength and toughness in QT plate. We send the certificate values before shipment so your welding engineer can confirm the procedure fits.
What is the delivery time for ABS DH50 plate?
DQ51 is normally rolled to order. Typical commercial lead time is about 6–10 weeks from confirmed PO and deposit, depending on the mill rolling schedule, QT capacity, UT and any 3.2 witness. Ocean transit comes on top of that. This is a commercial estimate, not a rule value, and we confirm it with each quotation. Every week, your coordinator sends the rolling, heat-treatment, testing and stamping status with photos. Delays are reported as soon as the mill tells us, not at the shipping date.
Which payment terms do you accept for ABS DH50, and how is my deposit protected?
We accept T/T or L/C at sight. With T/T, the usual terms are a 30 % deposit and the balance against the documents or after inspection. You or your inspector can check the AB/DQ51 stamping, the dimensions and the Surveyor-endorsed certificate before you pay the balance, so the plate is verified before most of the money moves. With L/C, payment is tied to the presented documents (commercial invoice, packing list, B/L, mill certificate, and the 3.2 or class certificate if you require one). For first orders we can start with a smaller trial lot. The proforma invoice shows the grade, sizes and certificate type, so the contract and the delivered plate match.
What are the equivalent grades of ABS DH50 among class societies and GB 712?
ABS lists ABS DH50 as DQ51 in 2-1-8; "DH50" is the commercial name. ASTM A131/A131M stops at FH40, so it has no direct equivalent. Other societies (DNV / LR / BV / CCS / NK / KR / RINA) have their own extra-high-strength grades at 500 N/mm² and −20 °C, and their marks must be confirmed against each society’s rules. Whether GB 712 lists this exact grade has to be checked per edition; otherwise the requirements are as per standard and mill certificate. Always write DQ51 on the PO, plus any additional society stamps you need.
Can you cut, bevel or machine ABS DH50 plates, and how are they packed for export?
Yes. In our workshop we can flame, plasma or laser cut DH50 to drawings, bevel weld edges (V, X or K preparation to your angle and land), drill and machine. Every cut piece keeps traceability: we transfer the AB/DQ51 marking and heat number before cutting, and the cutting list is tied to the mill certificate. For QT extra high strength plate, thermal cutting parameters follow the mill’s recommendations so the cut edge is not damaged. For export, plates are bundled with steel straps and timber spacers, marked with grade, size and heat number, and loaded in containers or as break-bulk. Shot blasting and shop primer are available on request. Loading photos and a packing list come with each shipment. See SHH STEEL for our processing capabilities.

Conclusion

ABS DH50 maps to rule grade DQ51: yield 500 N/mm², tensile 610–770 N/mm², Charpy −20 °C (50 J L / 33 J T). Fix on the order: official grade, delivery condition, UT, vacuum-degassing/t>50 needs, R-suffix if MOU, multi-class and 3.2.

SHH STEEL quotes only ABS-approved EHS mills, arranges Surveyor attendance, and can add third-party 3.2 and multi-class stamps.
