ASTM A283 Grade D Steel Plate | A283 Gr.D Structural Steel Plate
What is ASTM A283 Grade D Steel?
ASTM A283 Grade D is the top grade in ASTM A283/A283M. The specification covers low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plates for general structural and engineering use. Grade C is the grade most people search. Grade D is the grade they order when the drawing wants more yield and more tensile inside the same A283 family. As a China mill Agent, SHH STEEL supplies this plate to ASTM A283/A283M.
The same plate is written A283 Gr.D, A283GRD, A283 GR D, A283D, A283 Grade D, ASME SA283 Grade D, SA283 Gr.D, SA283GRD, SA283 GR D and A/SA283 Grade D. They all mean Grade D. ASME SA-283/SA-283M is the companion when a buyer wants dual marking.
This is not a pressure-vessel page. If the drawing says A285, SA285, A516 or SA516, stop and open the vessel specification. ASTM A283 Grade D is mild carbon structural plate. It is also not A572 Gr.50 and not A36, even though the tensile window of Grade D sits near A36. Yield of A283 Gr.D is 230 MPa minimum. Yield of A36 is 250 MPa minimum. That 20 MPa gap is enough to keep the two specifications from being interchangeable on a checked drawing.
A283 lists four grades. Grade A is the softest. Grade B is mid-low. Grade C is the commercial mid-high grade at 380–515 MPa. Grade D is 415–550 MPa with 230 MPa yield. Carbon also moves: Grade C heat carbon is 0.24% max, Grade D is 0.27% max. A Grade C heat cannot be stamped Grade D just because someone likes the name. A Grade D heat cannot be stamped Grade C if carbon sits above the Grade C cap.
Usual delivery is as-rolled. The mill does not normalize A283GRD unless the purchase order says so. Killed steel, copper-bearing plate, impact testing and ultrasonic testing are all extras. Write them. Do not assume them.
Dual marking ASTM A283 Grade D / ASME SA283 Grade D is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.
When a project is still choosing carbon plate, a China mill Distributor path through SHH STEEL puts A283GRD next to Carbon Steel Plates, HSLA Steel Plates, ASTM A285, ASTM A516 and ASTM A537. That comparison is the point of a mill-direct conversation: structural A283, vessel A285/A516, or HSLA A572 are three different purchases.

| Certification | EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 / third-party | As ordered |
This plate belongs to the Carbon Steel Plates family. It is not automatically Pressure Vessel Steel Plates. A tank can be built from A283 only when the project specification actually allows A283/SA283. A Section VIII vessel drawing that names SA516 is not an A283 job.
Chemical Composition
Chemistry for ASTM A283 Grade D is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASTM A283/A283M. Carbon is the first number to check against Grade C.
Heat Analysis — ASTM A283 Grade D / A283GRD
| Element | Heat Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.27 |
| Manganese (Mn), max | 0.90 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.040 |
| Copper (Cu), min, when specified | 0.20 |
Product Analysis — A283 Gr.D / SA283 Grade D
| Element | Product Analysis (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C), max | 0.31 |
| Manganese (Mn), max | 0.98 |
| Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S), max | 0.045 |
| Copper (Cu), min, when specified | 0.18 |
Silicon is not a forced killed-steel minimum in the base Grade D table. If the fabricator wants killed plate for better through-thickness soundness or cleaner welding, specify silicon or aluminum on the mill order. Copper-bearing A283 Gr.D is a separate line: 0.20% Cu minimum when atmospheric rusting resistance is wanted. That copper addition does not turn the plate into Corten or ASTM A242. It only gives a modest improvement in general atmosphere.
Phosphorus and sulfur look loose compared with modern vessel specs. A516 and SA517 run tighter residuals because those plates are Code vessel products. A283 is a structural specification. If the buyer wants P and S at 0.020% max, that is a supplementary restriction, not a hidden default.
A Grade C heat with 0.23% C cannot be renamed Grade D unless tensile also meets Grade D and the mill is willing to retest and re-stamp. In practice SHH STEEL does not play that game. If the drawing says ASTM A283 Grade D or A283D, the ladle is melted and tested as Grade D.
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Requirements — ASTM A283 Grade D per ASTM A283/A283M
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 415 – 550 MPa (60 – 80 ksi) |
| Yield strength, min | 230 MPa (33 ksi) |
| Elongation in 200 mm (8 in.), min | 20% |
| Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min | 23% |
Read that table next to Grade C. Grade C is 380–515 MPa tensile, 205 MPa yield, 22% / 25% elongation. Grade D picks up 30 MPa of minimum yield and a higher tensile band. Elongation drops two points. That is the trade. Forming a tight dish or a small-radius bend is a little harder on Grade D than on Grade C. Strength is better. If the shop is rolling thin shells by hand and cares about elongation, Grade C may be the better A283 choice. If the drawing is already Grade D, stay on Grade D.
A36 sits beside Grade D on many comparison charts. A36 tensile is typically 400–550 MPa with 250 MPa yield. The tensile bands overlap. The yield does not. Substituting A283GRD for A36 quietly lowers the specified yield. Substituting A36 for A283 Gr.D may raise yield but changes the specification name, chemistry table and marking. Neither swap is free.
Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness is not a default A283 requirement. A Brinell window is supplementary. Charpy V-notch is also not a default line. Structural projects in cold service sometimes add 27 J at 0 °C or −20 °C. That request has to be on the mill instruction. Do not assume Grade D is impact-tested because Grade D is “stronger.”
Material Comparison
| Grade | Strength class | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A283 Gr.A / ASME SA283 Gr.A | 310–415 MPa / 165 MPa yield | Softest A283 |
| ASTM A283 Gr.B / ASME SA283 Gr.B | 345–450 MPa / 185 MPa yield | Mid-low A283 |
| ASTM A283 Gr.C / ASME SA283 Gr.C | 380–515 MPa / 205 MPa yield | Common A283 |
| ASTM A283 Gr.D / ASME SA283 Gr.D | 415–550 MPa / 230 MPa yield | This page |
| ASTM A36 | 400–550 MPa class / 250 MPa yield | Different spec, higher yield |
| ASTM A285 Gr.C / ASME SA285 Gr.C | 380–515 MPa | Pressure-vessel spec |
| ASTM A572 Gr.50 | 345 MPa yield HSLA | Different family |
Order ASTM A283 Grade D when the drawing names Grade D. If the job is a Section VIII vessel, the buyer usually needs A285 or A516, not A283. If the job is structural and the drawing says A36, do not substitute A283GRD without a written revision. If the job is HSLA at 345 MPa yield, the conversation belongs on A572, not on A283.
Structural and General Engineering Service
ASTM A283 Grade D is selected when a fabricator wants more strength than Grade C inside the same mild-carbon family. Typical pieces are heavier base plates, equipment skids, crane-support fabrications, building brackets, hopper plates and general tanks that are not stamped to a vessel Code.
It is not weathering steel. It is not QT 690 MPa plate. It is not cryogenic nickel plate. It is not a boiler plate just because someone cuts a dish from it. Design values come from the project specification or the building code, not from a mill catalogue sentence.
Copper-bearing Grade D is sometimes used on outdoor structures that will be painted late or maintained poorly. That is still A283, not A242 and not S355J2W.
Weldability
A283GRD welds with ordinary carbon-steel practice, with one caution: carbon can sit higher than Grade C. Carbon equivalent should be calculated from the actual ladle, not from a memory of “mild steel.”
Procedures follow AWS D1.1 on structural work, or ASME Section IX if the plate is used on a Code item that actually accepts SA283. Low-hydrogen consumables such as E7018 (AWS A5.1) are the usual shop choice. Preheat depends on thickness, restraint, hydrogen and the actual Ceq. A 40 mm restrained Grade D joint is not the same start as a 10 mm Grade C fillet.
PWHT is not a mill default. If the fabrication specification calls for stress relief, simulated heat treatment of mill coupons can be added. Do not copy an A517 QT or A387 Cr-Mo procedure onto ASTM A283 Grade D. Procedure review can go through steel welding services. The fabricator owns the WPS.
Heat Treatment
Standard delivery of ASTM A283 Grade D is as-rolled.
Normalizing refines grain and can improve uniformity on thicker plate. Stress relieving is a fabrication cycle more often than a mill cycle. If the drawing says “normalized A283 Gr.D”, that cycle is ordered, soaked and recorded. If the drawing is silent, the plate ships as-rolled.
SHH STEEL reports the actual delivery condition on the MTC. Do not read “ASTM A283 Grade D” and assume a normalize was already done.
Delivery Condition
Usual delivery is as-rolled structural plate. Normalized or stress-relieved plate is supplied when specified.
The certificate lists ASTM A283 Grade D and, when dual certified, ASME SA283 Grade D; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; delivery condition; and supplementary tests.
Surface is mill finish or shot-blasted. Shop primer is available. Decorative 2B or BA finishes are not used on this product.
Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness rolling and testing when the order says so.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A283 Gr.D structural steel plate:
- Thickness: 6 mm – 100 mm
- Width: up to about 4000 mm
- Length: up to about 12000 mm
Thicker or extra-wide sizes depend on the rolling mill. Cut-to-length plates, base-plate nests and bevelled edges are available through steel cutting services. Thermal cutting of Grade D needs the same hydrogen and edge-cooling common sense as any 0.27% C carbon plate.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits follow ASTM A6 / mill plate tolerances unless the order cites another table. Flatness matters on machine-bed plates and on skid frames. If the buyer needs extra-flat plate, say so. As-rolled carbon plate is not precision ground.
Thickness tolerance, width tolerance, length tolerance and camber should be stated when they are tighter than mill standard. Ultrasonic testing is supplementary on A283. It is not automatic the way it often is on thick vessel plate.
Supplementary Requirements
Most export ASTM A283 Grade D orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.
Copper-bearing plate. Cu 0.20% min when atmospheric corrosion resistance is wanted. Mark the plate as copper-bearing if the contract requires that wording.
Killed steel. Silicon or aluminum as specified. Useful when the plate will be heavily welded or when the buyer does not want rimmed-steel segregation.
Heat treatment. Normalize or stress relieve as specified. Simulated PWHT of coupons when the fabrication cycle is known.
Charpy impact. Temperature, energy, specimen orientation and location as agreed. Common add-ons are 27 J at 0 °C or −20 °C. Grade D is not impact-tested by default.
NDE. UT to ASTM A435, A577 or A578 with purchaser levels. Edge MT/PT after cutting for highly restrained joints.
Hardness survey. Surface HBW when the datasheet sets a window for machining or wear.
Restricted chemistry. Tighter P, S or residuals than the base table.
Third-party witnessing. Quench is not part of this grade. Witness applies to rolling, mechanical tests and documents. Output can be EN 10204 3.2.
These tests run through steel testing service. If an item is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed, not tested and not printed as if it were.
Equivalent Material Grades
These names are used for project comparison. They are not automatic substitutes. Yield, carbon, impact rule and specification name still have to match the drawing.

Why Choose SHH STEEL
SHH STEEL works as a China Mill Direct Exporter for plates to ASTM A283/A283M. On ASTM A283 Grade D that is the supply route: the plate is rolled at a producing mill, tested to Grade D, marked to the ordered specification, and exported with the extras the buyer wrote on the purchase order.
That means mill pricing instead of mixed-yard stock. Dual A283 / SA283 Grade D marking is available. Heat analysis is on every certificate. Product analysis is added when requested. The 0.27% carbon cap and the 230 MPa yield line are checked against Grade D, not against Grade C and not against A36.
Heat-treatment condition is recorded. If the plate is as-rolled, the MTC says as-rolled. If the plate is normalized, the MTC says normalized. Charpy, UT, copper and killed practice are scheduled when they are on the RFQ, not promised after cutting.
EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when a third party is named.
We also keep the order on the right specification. Grade D is not Grade C. A283 is not A285. A283 is not A516. A283 Gr.D is not A36. A283 Gr.D is not A572 Gr.50. If the drawing is a pressure vessel, we will say so before anyone buys structural plate for a Code shell. If the drawing is A36, we will say the yield is not the same.
Cutting, welding procedure review and testing can be coordinated through the service pages already linked. Export packing and documents go through worldwide shipping service. Company scope: China steel Mill Agent-SHH STEEL.
FAQ
- hat names are used for ASTM A283 Grade D?Buyers write A283 Gr.D, A283GRD, A283 GR D, A283D, A283 Grade D, ASME SA283 Grade D, SA283 Gr.D and SA283GRD. They all mean Grade D in ASTM A283/A283M. SHH STEEL prints the wording on the purchase order.
- Is ASTM A283 Grade D the same as ASME SA283 Grade D?Chemistry and tensile limits match. ASTM A283 is the product spec. ASME SA-283 is the companion. As China mill-Direct Supply, SHH STEEL dual-certifies A283 Gr.D / SA283 Gr.D when requested.
- What is the tensile strength of A283 Gr.D?415–550 MPa. Yield is 230 MPa minimum. Elongation is 20% in 200 mm and 23% in 50 mm, per ASTM A283.
- Why specify Grade D instead of Grade C?Grade D has higher tensile and higher yield. Grade C is 380–515 MPa and 205 MPa yield. Carbon on Grade D is also allowed higher (0.27% heat max versus 0.24%). Follow the grade on the drawing.
- s A283D the same as A36, A285 Gr.C or A572 Gr.50?No. A36 specifies 250 MPa yield. A285 Gr.C is a pressure-vessel specification. A572 Gr.50 is HSLA with 345 MPa yield. ASTM A283 Grade D is a structural carbon plate at 230 MPa yield
- Can A283 Gr.D replace A36?Not as a silent substitute. Tensile bands overlap. Specified yield does not. SHH STEEL will not recertify A283GRD as A36, or A36 as A283 Grade D, without a written specification change.
- Is heat treatment mandatory for A283 Gr.D?No. Standard delivery is as-rolled. Normalize or stress relieve only when specified.
- Can welding of A283 Gr.D follow AWS D1.1?Yes on structural work. Calculate carbon equivalent from the actual ladle. The fabricator owns the procedure.
- Can SHH STEEL issue EN 10204 3.2 on ASTM A283 Grade D?Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when it is written on the order.
- What is the density of A283 Gr.D plate?7.85 g/cm³. SHH STEEL uses this value for shipping-weight estimates on ASTM A283 plate.
