ASTM A283 Grade A Steel Plate | A283 Gr.A Structural Steel Plate

ASTM A283 Grade B sits between Grade A and Grade C in ASTM A283/A283M. The specification covers low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plates for general structural and engineering use. Grade C takes most of the search traffic. Grade D is the strong end of the family. Grade B is the mid-low option when the drawing wants easier forming than Grade C and does not need Grade C or Grade D strength. As Direct Mill Supply by SHH STEEL, the plate is produced to ASTM A283/A283M.

The same plate is written A283 Gr.B, A283GRB, A283 GR B, A283B, A283 Grade B, ASME SA283 Grade B, SA283 Gr.B, SA283GRB, SA283 GR B and A/SA283 Grade B. They all mean Grade B. ASME SA-283/SA-283M is the companion when a buyer wants dual marking.

This is not a pressure-vessel page. If the drawing says A285, SA285, A516 or SA516, this specification is the wrong purchase. ASTM A283 Grade B is mild carbon structural plate. It is not A572. It is not A36. Yield of A283 Gr.B is 185 MPa minimum. Yield of A36 is 250 MPa minimum. That gap is large enough that nobody should treat the two names as twins.

A283 lists four grades. Grade A is the softest, with the lowest carbon cap. Grade B raises carbon a little and raises tensile into 345–450 MPa. Grade C jumps to 380–515 MPa. Grade D goes to 415–550 MPa. Carbon follows the same ladder: Grade A 0.14% max, Grade B 0.17% max, Grade C 0.24% max, Grade D 0.27% max. A Grade C heat cannot be stamped Grade B if carbon sits above 0.17%. A Grade B heat cannot be stamped Grade C just because a salesman likes the Grade C search volume.

Usual delivery is as-rolled. The mill does not normalize A283GRB unless the purchase order says so. Killed steel, copper-bearing plate, impact testing and ultrasonic testing are extras. Write them.

Dual marking ASTM A283 Grade B / ASME SA283 Grade B is available. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2.

When a project is still choosing carbon plate, a China mill Agent path through SHH STEEL puts A283GRB next to Carbon Steel Plates, HSLA Steel Plates, ASTM A285, ASTM A516 and ASTM A537. Structural A283, vessel A285/A516 and HSLA A572 are three different purchases.

This plate belongs to the Carbon Steel Plates family. It is not automatically Pressure Vessel Steel Plates. A tank can be built from A283 only when the project specification actually allows A283/SA283.

Chemistry for ASTM A283 Grade B is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASTM A283/A283M. Carbon is the first number to check against Grade A and Grade C.

Heat Analysis — ASTM A283 Grade B / A283GRB

Product Analysis — A283 Gr.B / SA283 Grade B

Silicon is not a forced killed-steel minimum in the base Grade B table. If the fabricator wants killed plate, specify silicon or aluminum on the mill order. Copper-bearing A283 Gr.B is a separate line: 0.20% Cu minimum when atmospheric rusting resistance is wanted. That copper addition does not turn the plate into Corten or ASTM A242.

Phosphorus and sulfur look loose compared with modern vessel specs. A516 runs tighter residuals because it is a Code vessel product. A283 is a structural specification. If the buyer wants P and S at 0.020% max, that is a supplementary restriction.

A Grade C heat with 0.22% C cannot be renamed Grade B. If the drawing says ASTM A283 Grade B or A283B, the ladle is melted and tested as Grade B. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every certificate and adds product analysis when required.

Tensile Requirements — ASTM A283 Grade B per ASTM A283/A283M

Read that table against the rest of the family. Grade A is 310–415 MPa tensile and 165 MPa yield, with 27% / 30% elongation. Grade B raises strength and gives up a little elongation. Grade C is 380–515 MPa and 205 MPa yield. Grade D is 415–550 MPa and 230 MPa yield. Grade B is the plate shops pick when they want more strength than Grade A and easier bending than Grade C.

A36 is not Grade B. A36 yield is 250 MPa. Grade B yield is 185 MPa. Anyone substituting A283GRB for A36 is giving away 65 MPa of specified yield. That is not a rounding error.

Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness is not a default A283 requirement. Charpy V-notch is not a default line. Cold-service projects sometimes add 27 J at 0 °C. Write that on the mill instruction. Do not assume Grade B is impact-tested because it is “mild steel.”

Order ASTM A283 Grade B when the drawing names Grade B. If the job is a Section VIII vessel, the buyer usually needs A285 or A516, not A283. If the job is structural and the drawing says A36, do not substitute A283GRB. If the job needs Grade C search-volume plate, change the specification in writing first.

ASTM A283 Grade B is selected for light-to-medium fabrication: covers, light base plates, formed channels, hopper liners that do not need Grade C strength, and general tanks that are not stamped to a vessel Code.

Lower carbon than Grade C and Grade D is the practical advantage. Bending, rolling and flanging are easier. Distortion after welding is usually milder. That is why some shops stay on Grade B even when Grade C is sitting in the warehouse.

It is not weathering steel. It is not QT high-strength plate. It is not cryogenic nickel plate. Design values come from the project specification, not from a mill catalogue sentence.

A283GRB welds with ordinary carbon-steel practice. Carbon is lower than Grade C and Grade D, so carbon equivalent is usually kinder.

Procedures follow AWS D1.1 on structural work, or ASME Section IX if the plate is used on a Code item that actually accepts SA283. Low-hydrogen consumables such as E7018 (AWS A5.1) are the usual shop choice. Preheat depends on thickness, restraint and hydrogen. A 10 mm Grade B fillet is not the same start as a 40 mm Grade D restrained butt.

PWHT is not a mill default. If the fabrication specification calls for stress relief, simulated heat treatment of mill coupons can be added. Do not copy an A517 QT or A387 Cr-Mo procedure onto ASTM A283 Grade B. Procedure review can go through steel welding services. The fabricator owns the WPS.

Standard delivery of ASTM A283 Grade B is as-rolled.

Normalizing refines grain on thicker plate. Stress relieving is a fabrication cycle more often than a mill cycle. If the drawing says “normalized A283 Gr.B”, that cycle is ordered, soaked and recorded. If the drawing is silent, the plate ships as-rolled.

SHH STEEL reports the actual delivery condition on the MTC. Do not read “ASTM A283 Grade B” and assume a normalize was already done.

Usual delivery is as-rolled structural plate. Normalized or stress-relieved plate is supplied when specified.

The certificate lists ASTM A283 Grade B and, when dual certified, ASME SA283 Grade B; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; delivery condition; and supplementary tests.

Surface is mill finish or shot-blasted. Shop primer is available. Decorative 2B or BA finishes are not used on this product.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness rolling and testing when the order says so.

Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for A283 Gr.B structural steel plate:

• Thickness: 6 mm – 100 mm
• Width: up to about 4000 mm
• Length: up to about 12000 mm

Thicker or extra-wide sizes depend on the rolling mill. Cut-to-length plates, formed blanks and nest sizes are available through steel cutting services. Thermal cutting of Grade B is straightforward. Edge quality still depends on preheat and cooling on thicker pieces.

Dimensional limits follow ASTM A6 / mill plate tolerances unless the order cites another table. Flatness matters on covers and machine guards. If the buyer needs extra-flat plate, say so. As-rolled carbon plate is not precision ground.

Thickness, width, length and camber should be stated when they are tighter than mill standard. Ultrasonic testing is supplementary on A283. It is not automatic.

Most export ASTM A283 Grade B orders add extras. SHH STEEL does not assume them.

Copper-bearing plate. Cu 0.20% min when atmospheric corrosion resistance is wanted. Mark the plate as copper-bearing if the contract requires that wording.

Killed steel. Silicon or aluminum as specified. Useful when the plate will be heavily welded.

Heat treatment. Normalize or stress relieve as specified. Simulated PWHT of coupons when the fabrication cycle is known.

Charpy impact. Temperature, energy, specimen orientation and location as agreed. Common add-ons are 27 J at 0 °C. Grade B is not impact-tested by default.

NDE. UT to ASTM A435, A577 or A578 with purchaser levels. Edge MT/PT after cutting when written.

Hardness survey. Surface HBW when the datasheet sets a window for machining.

Restricted chemistry. Tighter P, S or residuals than the base table.

Third-party witnessing. Witness applies to rolling, mechanical tests and documents. Output can be EN 10204 3.2.

These tests run through steel testing service. If an item is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed, not tested and not printed as if it were.

These names are used for project comparison. They are not automatic substitutes.

EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 is arranged when a third party is named.

We also keep the order on the right specification. Grade B is not Grade C. Grade B is not Grade A. A283 is not A285. A283 is not A516. A283 Gr.B is not A36. If the drawing is a pressure vessel, we will say so before anyone buys structural plate for a Code shell. If the drawing is A36, we will say the yield is not the same.
