Grade B allows slightly higher carbon than Grade A so the 275 MPa yield and 485–620 MPa tensile can be met. Nickel stays in the same 2.25% nominal band (heat 2.10–2.50%, product 2.03–2.57%). Steel shall be killed and shall meet fine-grain practice under ASTM A20. SHH STEEL reports heat analysis on every MTC and product analysis when ordered.

These limits apply to Grade B at both thin and thick sizes. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Hardness is typically around 160–180 HB after normalizing.

Use A203 Gr.B / A203GRB when the drawing needs 2.25Ni and 275 MPa yield. If only 255 MPa is required, Grade A is enough. If the same 275 MPa yield is needed with 3.5% Ni for colder service, use Grade E. Higher-strength carbon or HSLA vessel options include ASTM A537, ASME SA537 and HSLA Steel Plates. Elevated-temperature Cr-Mo vessels use ASME SA387.

Low-Temperature Toughness

Nickel in A203 Gr.B improves notch toughness for welded vessels in moderate- and low-temperature service. It is not a 9% Ni cryogenic grade, but it is tougher than carbon vessel plate of similar strength.

When Grades A, B, D and E are given a cooling rate faster than air cooling and then tempered at not less than 595°C, ASTM A203 requires Charpy V-notch testing with a minimum average of 27 J (20 ft·lbf). Test temperature and orientation are by agreement.

Weldability

ASTM A203 Grade B is a welded pressure-vessel plate. Normalized 2.25Ni steel welds with low-hydrogen procedures.

Matching nickel-bearing or C-Mn low-hydrogen consumables qualified to ASME Section IX are typical. Preheat depends on thickness and restraint. PWHT, when required by the vessel code, is commonly 595–650°C. Grade B carbon is slightly higher than Grade A, so hydrogen control and heat input should follow the qualified WPS.

Compared with quench-and-temper Grade F, Grade B is easier to fabricate. SHH STEEL recommends a qualified WPS/PQR for each thickness break.

Heat Treatment

All ASTM A203 Grade B plates shall be normalized, except where the purchaser approves a faster cool plus temper at not less than 595°C to improve toughness. That optional route requires Charpy testing.

Grade F is the only A203 grade that must be austenitized, water quenched and tempered. Do not apply Grade F quench-and-temper practice to Grade B unless the order is changed to Grade F.

Normalizing is performed in the austenite range followed by air cooling, producing the fine-grain ferrite-pearlite structure used for vessel toughness. SHH STEEL states the actual heat-treatment cycle on the mill certificate.

Delivery Condition

SHH STEEL delivers ASTM A203 Grade B / A203 Gr.B in the normalized condition as standard.

The mill certificate lists grade (A203 Gr.B or SA203 Gr.B), heat number, heat analysis, product analysis when ordered, tensile results, heat-treatment condition and any agreed Charpy values. Plates are supplied as industrial pressure-vessel plate: heat-treated, then pickled or shot-blasted as agreed.

Decorative stainless finishes such as 2B, BA or No.4 are not used on A203 Gr.B. Surface condition is vessel-plate quality for welding, NDE and coating.
